ALMOST everyone uses social media these days. Social media are websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.

Social networking, on the other hand, is the use of dedicated websites and applications to interact with other users, or to find people with similar interests to oneself.

Many posts on Facebook, tweets on Twitter, others upload their photos on Instagram or write a blog on Tumblr. People also share music and videos on YouTube. These are the top social networking sites.

The main purpose of social networking is really to connect with family and friends. It feels great to be able to talk via Facebook or Skype with them every day especially when they are abroad. It also feels good when you find a friend online whom you havent seen for quite some time.

Another good use of social networking is to market your services, your products and your activities. It really works! People can easily comment or reply to it. You can invite your friends to a party or event via Facebook. You can post about your advocacies or share quotes and other important reminders about your cause. Some also post things they sell and for sure, they find buyers.

Blogging is one way to express oneself through photography or through writing. Sometimes those who cannot communicate well in spoken words are very good in writing and art. Tumblr is usually the social networking for blogging. Facebook also has an option to write notes where you can share your thoughts. Well, some write it as posts.

Its also easy to get information in the web Mass schedules, movie times, definitions, phone numbers and more.

There are also websites and applications where you can read about your favorite cartoon character or actor. You can play games. You can download books. You can shop, too!

We can also connect with other organizations. You can feel the oneness of celebrations like World Mental Health Day (every October 10) or Mothers Day (May). We feel the spirit of celebrating as a nation or worldwide.

However, there are also disadvantages on using the Internet. Sometimes the friends we added are not really our real friends. There is also an issue on privacy. Some people just post what they like that they tend to forget that the Internet is a public world.
