Social networking leads to party shooting

A weekend party on the Front Range serves as a reminder of how social networking can get out of hand.

Invitations to a party in Westminster were posted on Facebook, and the message was forwarded numerous times, leading to unwanted guests showing up.

The party ended with a man getting shot.

The man is expected to survive, but Colorado Mesa University social media instructor Adam Cochran says everyone needs to be careful about what they post online.

"Even if we think it's secure and we only send out invites to certain people, other people can get hold of those invites and follow the information that's in there," said Cochran. "I think that the warning is to be cautious. I think that people are overly confident in how they use it. They think that they understand it all, and there won't be any problems with putting stuff online."

Cochran went on to stress that you should not put anything online that you don't want everyone to see.

Even though you can lock down your page, you should assume that information or pictures can be seen by everyone.
