PNP to public: Keep your whereabouts secret on social media

PNP spokesperson Chief Superintendent Generoso Cerbo Jr.

Secrecy discipline shouldnt only apply to military and policemen. The public should also observe the intelligence measure against criminal elementsespecially on social media.

The Philippine National Police on Monday advised the public who will be going on Holy Week and summer vacation to refrain from revealing their whereabouts and activities on social networking sites.

When it comes to secrecy disclipline, wag sana natin i-advertise kung nasaan tayo, kung hanggang kailan tayo sa lugar, at kung sino sino kasama natin (Lets not advertise where we are, or up to when well be staying in a place, and who we are with), PNP spokesperson Chief Superintendent Generoso Cerbo Jr. said in a press briefing.

He said exposing too much of their movements on social media, which is now becoming a playground of cybercrime criminals, will compromise their safety.

Most of the social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have location monitoring feature, which gives opportunity for lawless elements to track down a potential target.

Advising people to be careful of their movements online, Cerbo said criminals might take advantage of the information people are sharing.

We are not preventing the people from enjoying and share their enjoyment online but we should also balance what to upload and what not to upload so we could protect ourselves and our loved ones, he said. AU
