KUALA LUMPUR: With so many activities conducted for the blogging and social networking community, it seemed that the recently concluded Malaysia Social Media Week (MSMW) 2012 had achieved its target to bring people together while creating an awareness of the future of social media in Malaysia.

Launched at the Putra World Trade Centre on Feb 13, the fi ve-day event kicked off with a two-day conference, the "World Bloggers and Social Media Summit", featuring 30 social media figures from the United States, the United Kingdom, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia, South Africa, India, Singapore and Malaysia.

Sharing their experiences and expertise, the speakers enabled interactive discussions among Gen-Y users on issues such as freedom of speech via blogging and social networking.

Other topics of interest included social media-revolution in the workplace, brand presence in social media, engaging people in creative aspects of new media, well as new media influences and changes on the global, political and economic landscape.

Through this, the audience obtained insights on the future of social media including online transactions via Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus which will affect the way people think, conduct business and build nations.

Speakers at the summit included Google+ Malaysia's Ryan Hayward, Aktiv Digital CEO Matt Sutton (Singapore), Affi liate Marketing's Murray Newland (UK), WATconsult CEO Rajiv Dingra (India), Ogilvy Digital Academy's Dave Duarte (South Africa), Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin, Seri Setia assemblyman Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, The Malay Mail managing editor Terence Fernandez, Zubedy Foundation founder Anas Zubedy and Malaysian Insider CEO Jahabar Sadiq.

To encourage social media users to remain connected, MSMW 2012 had run a series of activities in the form of Gadgets Galore, Social Poly, Social Media Photo Contest, Social Media Hub and the Developers Corner, which took place in various locations around Kuala Lumpur.

The event wrapped up on Friday with the MSMW 2012 Concert at the Panggung Anniversari in Taman Tasik Perdana, featuring performances from local rap artist Altimet who is famous for hits such as Chantek, Malaysian Boy and Syukur.

He spearheaded the concert alongside a group of artists he had arranged, including Aizat Amdan, Rabbit Mac, Najwa Latif, Dennis Lau, Shawn Lee, Hujan and Amir Jahari.

Altimet, an active and infl uential Twitter user himself, had carefully selected celebrities with a massive following via social media outlets such as Youtube, Facebook and Twitter.

The concert, hosted by Nadia Heng and Haniff , was also graced by Malaysia Social Media Chambers founder and president Shahul Hameed Shaik Dawood, as well as MSMW 2012 ambassador Aznil Nawawi.

MSMW 2012 was launched by Information Department director-general Tuan Ibrahim Abdul Rahman in the presence of Social Media Chambers founder and president Shahul Hameed Shaik Dawood.
