Six Skills For Succeeding On Social Media — Lessons From Crystal King

I was thrilled to recently speak with Crystal King on my podcast All The Social Ladies. Crystal is the social media and marketing strategist at Keurig Green Mountain. She has many years of experience building brands via traditional and digital strategies, and has been recognized with a number of honors and awards. Previously, she worked as a communications professor at Boston University. She continues to reach audiences via her work as an editor and author for the Grub Street Blog, Writer Unboxed, and iMedia Connection (to name a few).

In this interview Crystal shares her practical advice and key insights on start-ups, adopting social media, and choosing the right platform for your brand.

Start-Ups

Crystal has had the opportunity to be part of a start-up culture during her career and was able to further develop her skillset directly because of this experience; in particular being creative and flexible as you never know when the horizon might change. She believes that when you are younger, the atmospheres and friendships you find yourself in are extremely important for your career and a start-up culture can help foster this. She does heed a warning though: you have to be dedicated as the long hours can be taxing but when you love something, you make time for it.

Adopting Social Media

Crystal doesnt believe that you have to be an early adopter to succeed in social, but it does help if you have a love for it. Having a foundation skillset and natural passion can help you succeed. Her top six skills are:

1) Being able to write clearly and efficiently.

2) Being flexible and able to multi-task.

3) Having a tough skin to deal with crises & challenges.

4) Being a creative problem solver.
