La Crosse speaks up: Letters to the editor for the week of Jan. 29, 2021 – La Crosse Tribune
Curtail non-essential outings so we get through this
I write this letter out of concern for all those who read this. We have all stood tall as the pandemic grinds on (Some compare it to being in a SF novel). But there is more to be done!
We are all familiar with what public officials insist that we do (masks, social distancing, hand washing, avoiding crowds ect). For the most part, we have done our part. But, I have seen a behavior that needs to be addressed. I have seen too many vulnerable individuals out and about. For most of us, Covid is mild or even asymptomatic. But for some, due to age, underlying health conditions, and other factors, it becomes a serious, even deadly disease.
Hence, I implore those whom I have described to limit or curtail non-essential outings. And I implore those who love and care for these folks to urge the same (and do the same for themselves, so they dont bring it home). The end is in sight, and how we finish can save lives. Those who care for the vulnerable must offer to run errands, sparing these folks from exposure. Doing so, we must support all involved emotionally.
The pandemic weighs upon us all, but we are closer to the end than to the beginning. LET US ALL MOVE FORWARD!
Supporting Rebecca Schwarz for council
I was happy to see that Rebecca Schwarz is running for La Crosse City Council in District 10. Ive had the pleasure of working with her on a number of committees and can confirm that she is forward-thinking and conscientious.
Her decisions are guided by thoughtfulness, honesty and integrity. She does the necessary homework, listens to all sides of every issue, and makes consistently sound and ethical decisions.
Schwarz will truly represent the interests of all her constituents. She is open, listens to all concerns, and communicates in a clear, respectful, and direct manner. Additionally, Rebecca is diligent and willing to put in the time and energy thats necessary to understand the inner workings of city government.
I trust Schwarz to serve District 10 and the entire City of La Crosse with hard work, integrity and thoughtfulness. She will be a great addition to the City Council. I encourage all members of District 10 to vote in the April elections and to vote for Rebecca Schwarz.
Vote against Vernon County resolution
The Constitution was never intended to be a free pass to violate the rules of basic safety and fairness. We have common-sense boundaries on many of its provisions. The Constitution guarantees Freedom of Religion, but we cant have human sacrifice. The Constitution guarantees Freedom of Speech, but we cant lie in a contract.
Given the lethal potential of guns, the Second Amendment in particular should not be immune to reasonable boundaries. America has more guns per person, and more gun deaths, than any other advanced nation. The last thing we suffer from is a lack of gun rights.
By opposing any boundaries, the 2nd Amendment Preservation resolution before the Vernon County Board has potential to hurt all of us. And as a nationwide initiative, it could come to your county.
Nobody wants to limit hunting, or a pistol for home-defense, but having an assault rifle hanging from your shoulder is just showing off. Its thuggery. Weve seen this push for unlimited gun privileges produce a sense of entitlement for violence. This attitude created the Wolverine Watchmen, who planned to execute Michigan officials, and the Proud Boys, happy to prepare for violence if given the signal, and the Bundy group, who felt it was their right to exploit, then seize, Federal lands, and most recently, the seditious violence at the Capital.
This resolution fans the flames of that mindset. It commits the county to oppose any law that would in any way regulate gun behavior. More lawlessness! How is that Constitutional? Lets replace this toxic perspective with civil responsibility and common sense. Vernon County Board members, please vote against this destructive resolution.
Could this be a new slogan?
A story is circulating that leaders of the Wisconsin and Minnesota GOP parties, in an effort to counteract recent negative publicity related to their votes against both certifying presidential election results and presidential impeachment and also forwarding legislation to hamper Covid-19 steps taken by their respective governors, have taken a step which they feel will enhance their standing among voters.
They have jointly adopted what they feel is a new voter-grabbing slogan: Join your Minnesota/Wisconsin GOP as we walk backwards in the dark.
In a related item, their buddy, Mike Lindell, is supposedly having his MyPillow factory retrofitted to make outfits for his traitorous friends. They come in two prison colors: traditional black and white striped and also flashy orange both available as straitjackets.
Why resolution is right for Vernon County
The Vernon County Public Hearing for the Vernon County Second Amendment Preservation Resolution will be held February 1, the board meets February 2. See the VernonCounty.org website calendar for details.
I am the author of this resolution. After becoming aware of other Sanctuary Resolutions passed by other County Boards, I learned Monroe County was holding a hearing, and voting on February 26, 2020. I attended the meeting, heard opinions, and read many other resolutions. Many resolutions used the term sanctuary, and some other resolutions stated their county board wouldnt fund, and their sheriff wouldnt enforce certain Second Amendment control measures.
To me, the term preservation is more appropriate, and a better example for other County Boards that may choose to submit a future resolution. So, I wrote this resolution to support our current rights, and oppose future legislation.
The resolution was discussed at the Law Enforcement Committee in July with public input, that committee passed a motion to move the resolution forward, with time for more public input, to the full County Board. Other issues delayed the public hearing until the February date.
This resolution is not about political parties or 2020 political issues. Brown County, Illinois, passed the first resolution in 2007. Today more than 1,165 counties across this country, over 37%, have passed resolutions, including 12 counties in Wisconsin.
I support the Constitution, the guarantees of personal freedoms, and the clearly defined limitations of the governments power. Do you?
Supporting Mackenzie Mindel for council
With only one city council incumbent running for re-election this Spring, La Crosse voters have the opportunity to elect candidates that offer fresh perspectives and creative solutions to the challenges facing our community. Those of us who live in District 8 are especially lucky to have the chance to vote for Mackenzie Mindel.
Ive known Mackenzie for six years, and am proud to call her a neighbor and a friend. She is a thoughtful decision maker with an extensive background in community engagement and comprehensive planning that will serve herand our communitywell. She is a skilled communicator, a creative problem solver, and someone I already turn to often when I have questions about how or why city decisions are made.
Mindel is a homeowner in District 8 and a new parent; I trust her to make present-day decisions with an eye toward the future, carefully balancing immediate needs with long-term goals. I believe she will help our city make good on its promise to become carbon-neutral by 2050, a necessary contribution to the international fight to slow climate change. Similarly, I have faith that her education in sustainable leadership and social innovation will be an asset to our district, which houses a university, a medical facility, and several small businesses, all of which are retooling and rebuilding as the COVID pandemic continues to take its toll.
Mackenzie is compassionate, knowledgeable, and ready to lead, I look forward to casting my vote for her to represent District 8 on April 13.
A lack of courage
Politics as usual it appears. The Republicans havent a leg to stand on with the Trump impeachment and wish it would all go away. So its rhetoric like we need to move forward and its time to heal is all they can come back with.
History will show that the lack of courage and their own self interest is what will bring the country down so that they can retain whatever power they can hold on to with no thought of the common good of the country.
