Republican Women host Meet the Candidate

May 5, 2014

On Thursday night, the Republican Women of West Texas hosted a Meet the Candidate event at TBJ Outdoors. Each candidate was given five minutes to address the crowd. Attendees were also able to visit with the representatives before and after the meeting as well. Those attending the meeting for the City Commission race were Jeremy Wilks, Precinct 4 candidate; Precinct 2 candidate and incumbent Jim McKenzie; and incumbent candidate for Precinct 4, Jerod Peek. Miesha Hand is the other candidate for the seat of Precinct 2 city commissioner. The two candidates for District 5 for the Sweetwater ISD Board of Trustees, Jana Hall and Danny Escobar, spoke to the audience as well. Connie Jamison and Jamie Clem, the two candidates for the Republican run-off election for District Clerk, were also given an opportunity to speak. Early voting will take place on Monday, May 19 through Friday, May 23 at the Nolan County Courthouse, with the run-off election scheduled for Tuesday, May 27 at voters' designated precincts. It was noted that voters who did not participate in the March primary election are eligible to vote in the May run-off election. However, anyone who voted as a Democrat during the March primary cannot participate, only those who voted Republican. Donna Boatright, administrator at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital, spoke about the $25.2 million bond election that will also appear on the May 10 ballot and was joined by hospital board chairman Steve Holcomb. After four days of early voting, around 200 ballots have already been cast. Also in attendance at the event were Doug Alexander, candidate for Nolan County Commissioner Precinct 2, and Whitley May, candidate for Nolan County Judge. Their respective positions will appear on the November 4, 2014 ballot.
