The black farmworker convicted of killing Eugene Terre'Blanche believes the white supremacist leader gave him HIV, a psychologist has told his sentencing hearing in South Africa.

Chris Mahlangu was convicted in May of bludgeoning Terre'Blanche to death in his farmhouse outside the small town of Ventersdorp on April 3, 2010.

During the trial, the court found no proof that Terre'Blanche had raped Mahlangu.

But as his sentencing hearing got under way on Monday, clinical psychologist Hein Swanepoel told the court that Mahlangu believes Terre'Blanche raped him and gave him HIV, the virus that could lead to AIDS, according to the Independent Online.

"Mr Mahlangu says he is HIV positive and suspects he must have been infected by the deceased," Swanepoel said, according to the website.

"He alleges he was raped by the deceased three to four times and did not resist because the deceased was a powerful man. He did inform police about the rape and for fraudulent reasons that was not included in the statement," Swanepoel said.

The psychologist was testifying in mitigation, as Mahlangu's defence tried to convince the court to hand down a milder sentence than the possible life in prison.

Judge John Horn had rejected Mahlangu's claims to have acted in self-defence and accepted the prosecution's argument that the killing had been triggered by a fight over wages.

Terre'Blanche, 69 when he was killed, co-founded the far right Afrikaner Resistance Movement (AWB) which violently opposed South Africa's all-race democracy and campaigned for a self-governing white state.

Their campaign included bomb attacks ahead of the 1994 elections, which ended the white-minority apartheid state.

It was announced Monday that Incarnate Word, located in San Antonio, will become a Southland member effective July 1, 2013.

Meanwhile, Abilene Christian announced Monday that it has received an invitation to join the league and shift to Division I affiliation in all sports.

Abilene Christians board of trustees and administration will discuss the Southland invitation during a regular scheduled board meeting this week. If ACU accepts, an announcement will come during a Saturday press conference.

Incarnate Word is currently a member of the Lone Star Conference in NCAA Division II, but the university will begin a four-year transition to Division I, according to a release from the Southland Conference.

The release, which dealt only with the Incarnate Word verdict, said it is expected that, for scheduling purposes, UIW will count as a Division I team during the 2014-15 academic year and the school will be fully eligible for NCAA championship events in 2017-18.

Commissioner Tom Burnett said Southland presidents studied membership additions and the impact of Division I conference realignments for two years. He said the conference was only interested in adding insitutions that clearly bring added value to the league in terms of academics, athletics, facilities, geography, fan support media market size and presence in the market.

UIW is a historic and accomplished institution and has the potential and resources to be a competitively successful member of the Southland Conference and NCAA Division I, Burnett said.

The Southland made site visits to three potential new members -- Incarnate Word, Abilene Christian and New Orleans -- prior to making the UIW announcement.

The Southland remains active in its discussions with other universities that we have been engaged with in recent months, Burnett said. We expect resolution on these membership options in the near future.

Burma has abolished direct media censorship in the latest dramatic reform by its quasi-civilian regime, but journalists face other formidable restrictions including a ban on private daily newspapers and a pervasive culture of self-censorship.

Under the new rules, journalists no longer have to submit reports to state censors before publication. This ends a practice strictly enforced over nearly half a century of military rule that ended in March last year.

Previously, every song, book, cartoon, news report and planned piece of art required approval by teams of censors rooting out political messages and criticisms of one of Asias most repressive governments.

Changes have gathered momentum since June last year when the ministry of information decided to allow about half of Burmas privately run weekly journals and monthly magazines to publish without submitting page proofs to a censorship board in advance.

Restrictions were lifted yesterday on the remaining 80 political and six religious journals, said Tint Swe, head of the press censorship board at the ministry of information.

Over the past year, Burma has introduced the most sweeping reforms in the former British colony since a 1962 military coup.

A semi-civilian government, stacked with former generals, has allowed elections, eased rules on protests and freed dissidents, among other changes.

Papers have since been testing the boundaries, often putting opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi on front pages and giving coverage to government critics.
