Congo wants the United Nations peacekeepers to "neutralise" a new rebel movement and a force that helped carry out neighbouring Rwanda's 1994 genocide and protect the tense and porous border.

Foreign minister Raymond Tshibanda N'tunga Mulongo also called on the UN Security Council to impose sanctions on those named in a UN report in July that accused high-ranking Rwandan officials of helping to create, arm and support the new M23 rebels within Congo - as well as the rebel movement's leaders.

Mr Mulongo held a news conference after discussions this week with the security council and the panel that wrote the report. Rwanda's foreign minister Louise Mushikiwabo, who has vehemently denied the accusations, was also at UN headquarters this week, meeting the panel and council members.

Congo's mineral-rich east is facing the worst upsurge in fighting in years, which has forced some 280,000 people from their homes.

The fighting escalated in April when army deserters calling themselves the M23 Movement launched a rebellion to demand better pay, better armaments and amnesty from war crimes.

The conflict in the east is a spillover from the 1994 genocide. Hundreds who participated in the mass slaughter escaped into Congo and still fight there.

The M23 rebels are an incarnation of a group of Congolese Tutsi set up to fight Rwandan Hutu rebels in Congo.

Mr Mulongo said that all of Congo's borders were quiet except for the border with Rwanda, and instead of trying to introduce a second foreign force to help bring peace to the country his government wants the security council to beef up the mandate of the 22,000-strong UN peacekeeping force.

He said the government envisaged a special unit being created for a limited period of time - six to nine months - to try to get M23 and the FDLR, or Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda led by Hutus who helped perpetrate Rwanda's 1994 genocide and escaped to Congo, to "simply stop what they're doing".

Up to 10,000 people may be exposed to deadly virus after staying at California's Yosemite National Park over the summer.

ABOUT 10,000 visitors to Yosemite National Park could have been exposed to a virus that kills one in three victims and cannot be treated, officials say.

So far, the rare hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, or HPS, has been confirmed in six people - two of whom have died - while a ''multiple'' number of other suspected cases of the rodent-borne disease are being investigated.

Authorities at Yosemite, in California, closed the Signature Tent Cabins last week at Curry Village, a popular lodging area in Yosemite Valley, the tourist centre of the park.

The US National Park Service has written to about 2900 people who booked stays in the Boystown area tent lodgings between June 10 and August 24, alerting them to keep an eye out for symptoms of HPS.

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention put the number of people who actually stayed in the tent cabins - including guests - at 10,000.

''On August 24, 2012, the tents were disinfected and visitors were relocated. People who stayed in the tents between June 10 and August 24 may be at risk of developing HPS in the next six weeks,'' it said on Friday.

Thousands exposed to killer virus

Pocono Raceway officials continue to remain mum on the particulars of an investigation into the track's emergency procedures after a lightning strike killed a fan in early August.

Track spokesman Bob Pleban said only that the investigation is "an ongoing process" and that the track had no update to share on the time line of events that happened during and after the Pennsylvania 400.

On Aug. 5, Brian Zimmerman, 41, of Moosic, was in the parking lot of the raceway in Long Pond when a thunderstorm rolled in, causing the race to be delayed and later canceled.

The National Weather Service advised the thunderstorm likely would include multiple lightning strikes. The track saw many of those strikes, including one that hit in the parking lot behind the grandstand section of bleachers.

The lightning strike was strong enough to injure nine people and to kill Zimmerman. He was given medical attention at the track, but could not be revived and was pronounced dead at Pocono Medical Center about an hour after the incident.

At a press conference less than 24 hours later, Pocono Raceway President and CEO Brandon Igdalsky said track officials had begun an investigation into whether anything could have been done differently to prevent the death.

Igdalsky didn't lay out any details then, and continues not to make any of the investigation public almost a month later.

Igdalsky said the track would immediately establish a memorial fund for the victims of the lightning strike.

Pleban said the amount raised for the fund would not be known "for some time."

The FBI recently published a report warning of the dangers posed by social-network sites that it says are being exploited by digital con artists, criminals and other dishonest actors.

The FBI report, made public earlier this month, states that social-networking criminals are exploiting this capability for nefarious purposes, using two main tactics.

They include computer hackers who specialize in writing and manipulating computer code to gain access or install software on computers and phones. The second method involves hackers who specialize in exploiting personal connections through social networks.

Social hackers, sometimes referred to as social engineers, manipulate people through social interactions (in person, over the phone, or in writing), the report said.

Humans are a weak link in cybersecurity, and hackers and social manipulators know this. They try to trick people into getting past security walls. They design their actions to appear harmless and legitimate.

Social-networking sites such as Facebook and others are Internet-based services that are used to share information and communicate.

According to the FBI, the risk of using social-network sties is that once information is posted to a social-networking site, it is no longer private.

The more information you post, the more vulnerable you may become, states the report, posted on the National Counterintelligence Executive site. Even when using high-security settings, friends or websites may inadvertently leak your information.

Personal information obtained by hackers and criminals on social networks can be used to conduct attacks on people or organizations; and the more information that is shared, the more likely someone could impersonate you and trick one of your friends into sharing personal information, downloading malware, or providing access to restricted sites, the report said.

Foreign intelligence agencies, predators, hackers and business competitors are among those who use social-networking sites that can be targeted in attacks. The information may not be used to attack the social-networking site, but could be used in other attacks.
