IBM upgrades Connections enterprise social networking software

IBM is releasing a new version of its Connections enterprise social networking (ESN) software, which companies use to give their employees social media capabilities adapted for workplace collaboration, such as employee profiles and blogging.

Enhancements in IBM Connections 4.0 include a more interactive activity stream, broader support for mobile devices, more granular usage analytics and integration with email and calendar systems, according to Heidi Ambler, director of product management for IBM Social Software. It is available immediately.

"This new release helps customers grasp the power of social analytics, gives them anytime-anywhere access to the software and provides cutting-edge capabilities," she said.

Instead of a list-like news feed, the new software has an activity stream in employee profiles that users can filter for relevance, as well as act on the notifications right from the Connections interface.

For example, users can trigger pop-up boxes from the activity stream notifications and see the latest comments made about a file, see who posted the latest version of it and add tags to it.

An integration with IBM's own Lotus Notes-Domino and with Microsoft's Outlook-Exchange email and calendar systems lets users manage email messages through Connections.

It will also be possible for users to import into Connections external Web pages from any site -- blogs, public Facebook posts, Twitter feeds -- or data from third-party applications, so that the information can be discussed collaboratively.

Mobile support has been extended and now includes applications for various iOS, Android and Windows Phone devices.

IBM is also announcing new Connections customers, including financial product distributor Primerica and vehicle leasing company LeasePlan.

Connections is server-based software accessed by end users via browsers. Customers can install it on their own premises or have it hosted on a public or private cloud data center by IBM or one of its partners.

Watch the Video: Press Pass Pullman – Week 2

*SWX has begun a new weekly program with the arrival of Mike Leach at Washington State. Press Pass Pullman airs every Monday night at 10 p.m., right before SWX Tonight.

Press Pass Pulllman features the highlights from Monday's media day in Pullman. And because Coach Leach limits the availability of players to the media during the week, the weekly program on SWX is a must-see for true Cougar fans!

The consistent theme throughout Monday's weekly news conference with Washington State was one word: consistency. Coach Mike Leach addressed it. Running back Carl Winston addressed it. Linebacker Darryl Monroe addressed it. And everyone else was thinking it.

Leach said his Cougars showed some "really positive" things on Saturday against Eastern Washington, but the inconsistency on all sides of the ball was the negative part.

Coach Leach on playing Eastern Washington:

"Anytime you get these deals where everybody is just a few miles apart, every time I've done it, they're just funny games. Everybody thought about going to this school or that school and everybody went to high school together and stuff like that, so it really creates this near-proximity rivalry whatever it's called. The ball bounced that way and I think there was erratic play, really on both teams a little bit. But the one thing I thought [EWU] did impressively was they didn't seem to have the ups and downs we did."

Leach said he admired the way Eastern Washington played "really hard". And Leach said he was disappointed in the way his team let down in the third quarter.

On Jeff Tuel, his injuries and whether he will play against UNLV:

In China, Still No Word on VP Xi

Chinese officials and state media remained silent Wednesday on the status of the country's leader-in-waiting, Xi Jinping, as rumors continued to swirl regarding his 11-day absence from public life.

At a regular press briefing, China's Foreign Ministry again refused to provide any details on the Chinese vice president, who was expected in just a few weeks to be named the country's top leader for the next decade. Spokesperson Hong Lei deflected several reporters' questions about Xi, saying he had no information.

Xi has not appeared at a number of meetings with foreign visitors during the past week, including U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He was last seen in public on September 1 at the opening of the fall semester of the Beijing Communist Party school.

While many observers point out that the speculation is unsubstantiated, they say the episode reveals the government's crumbling sense of credibility among Chinese citizens and foreign media.

Joseph Cheng, a political science professor at City University in Hong Kong, said the Communist Party's time-tested record of keeping the health conditions of its leaders a state secret may be hurting more than it is helping.

"This certainly reveals a lack of a sense of accountability to the domestic population and to the international community," he said. "I'm sure many foreign ministry officials understand that this secrecy may in fact backfire and may generate unhealthy and unnecessary speculation, but I'm afraid that they simply cannot or dare not persuade top leaders to change their positions."

But Cheng says there is no evidence to suggest the incident will affect the Communist Party's tightly-controlled leadership transfer that is expected to begin in the coming weeks with a Communist Party Congress.

"We have detected no signs that there will be serious leadership changes before the 18th Party Congress," he said. "Chinese leaders in the past five years or so have been working hard to prepare for a predictable succession process, and they certainly would like to keep it that way. "

Meanwhile, rumors continue to fly in China, both on the street and on the country's heavily censored microblogs. Jeremy Goldkorn, the editor of Danwei.com - a website about Chinese media and Internet - says Beijing's team of web censors are working overtime to squash the rumors.

"As is the practice, they're being scraped quite thoroughly. So it's quite hard to find any of these rumors on the Chinese Internet," he said. "The name of Xi Jinping, I think right now is still a blocked search term on Sina Weibo, the big Twitter-like service, and so is backache. So they're doing a pretty good job of keeping it clean."
