Nicole Kidman refused to use 'N word'

Nicole Kidman refused to use the N word in her controversial movie The Paperboy.

The Oscar-winner stars alongside Zac Efron in the dark thriller, which involves various explicit sex scenes.

Despite pushing the boundaries for her role, Nicole knew where she had to draw the line.

"I asked her to use the 'N' word," directorLee Danielsrevealed during a press conference.

"I could feel the racial tension there in the town. She said, 'I won't do it.' I told my producer, 'She won't do it!' Then he mapped it out 'Lee, day one she is on a washing machine, day two she is urinating onZac Efron, day three she's having telepathic sex I think you can forgive her."

Nicole has two adopted children, Isabella and Connor, with her ex-husband Tom Cruise, and also raises daughters Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret with current spouse Keith Urban.

Personal reasons helped her decide not to use the term.

"I just didn't feel it was right for the character," Nicole explained.

"I have a son [Connor] who is African American. I just didn't feel like it was right. What I try to do as an actor is fulfil a directors vision. I have opinions, but at the same time I'm not there to stop him from anything. I've really tried to do that in every film. I never want to pull them off their vision."

Nicole Kidman Refused to Say "N" Word for Controversial Paperboy Role

Nicole Kidman went outside of her comfort zone to play a sexy role in The Paperboy, but there was one thing she wasn't willing to do.

"I asked her to use the 'N' word," director Lee Daniels revealed Wednesday during the New York Film Festival press conference for the film. "I could feel the racial tension there in the town. She said, 'I won't do it.' I told my producer, 'She won't do it!' Then he mapped it out -- 'Lee, day one she is on a washing machine, day two she is urinating on Zac Efron, day three she's having telepathic sex . . . I think you can forgive her."

Kidman, 45, plays a trashy, bleach-blonde woman in the dark, twisted film set in the 1960s. The Paperboy stars Efron and Matthew McConaughey as two brothers investigating the case of a death row inmate played by John Cusack, who Kidman's character is obsessed with marrying.

"I just didn't feel it was right for the character," the actress explained of why she wouldn't say the word. "I have a son [Connor Cruise] who is African American. I just didn't feel like it was right. What I try to do as an actor is fulfill a directors vision. I have opinions, but at the same time I'm not there to stop him from anything. I've really tried to do that in every film. I never want to pull them off their vision."

Kidman is mother to adopted children Isabella, 19, and Connor, 17, with ex-husband Tom Cruise, and daughters Sunday Rose, 4, and Faith Margaret, 21 months, with husband Keith Urban.

But the mother of four does want to take on more challenging roles in the future.

"I just wanted to push myself to do something I haven't done before. I want to feel challenged, ripped open, to bring discomfort to myself and it's really hard to find those roles and people who will do it with you," she said. "But at this point in my life I don't want to be scared. I'm going to push through."

Press: One word describes Obama

How to describe President Barack Obamas performance at Wednesdays debate? Journalists seem to have found the word: Professorial. (italics added)

(PHOTOS: Obama not having fun)

Huffington Post: But the president failed to respond effectively, drifting into his professorial demeanor and barely attempting to veil his annoyance with Romney.

Los Angeles Times: For his part, Obama was pleasant and professorial, as if he were merely engaged in a ponderous academic discussion, rather than a political grudge match with enormous consequences.

New York Times: The pundits and prognosticators have spoken. The spinners and spinnees have gone home. President Obama may have sounded a bit too professorial, and Mitt Romney may have come energetic and ready to spar.

(Also on POLITICO: Obama hit with left hook on TV, online)

Andrew Sullivan: Look: you know how much I love the guy, and you know how much of a high information viewer I am, and I can see the logic of some of Obamas meandering, weak, professorial arguments.

Salt Lake Tribune: Mitt Romney tried to shake off the stiffness and President Barack Obama attempted to drop the professorial tone as the two met Wednesday for the first of three presidential debates.

Chicago Tribune: Romney, a former private equity executive, spoke in lists and was more concise than Obama, who has practiced unsuccessfully at tamping down his professorial style.

Reuters: Romney, however, did himself some favors with crisper answers than Obama, who sounded professorial and a bit long-winded despite his staffs best efforts to get him to give snappier comments.

All gain and no pain in leisurely tourist triathlon

My wife and I have come to refer to it as the Mallorca triathlon.

Rather than the rigorous run-bike-swim event requiring extensive training and incredible athleticism, our version of the sport befits arriving on the sunny Spanish island via Holland America cruise ship.

As the 920-foot Noordam glides into dock at Palma - Mallorca's capital - my wife and I are finishing up a three-kilometre light jog round and round the ship's elegant wood-floor promenade deck.

We find daily runs partially justify the copious amounts of gourmet food and fine wine one tends to consume on a 10-day cruise of the Mediterranean.

Showered and breakfasted, we're down the gangplank and onto a shuttle bus that takes us to the centre of Palma.

But rather than file up to the magnificent cathedral like all the other tourists, we bypass the lines and head straight to Palma on Bike to rent our transportation for the day for 14 euros each.

The bike tech, with very little English and a lot of pointing at a map, directs us to the nearby bike path that hugs the coastline for 15 km.

With a lot more pointing at the ocean - this time by us - and making swimming motions with our arms, we deduce this leisurely bike route will pass by numerous beaches.

So, the easy cycle and swim portions of our island triathlon can be checked off.

Mallorca is part of the Balearic Islands that glitter in the Mediterranean off the east coast of Spain and also includes the party island of Ibiza, asd well as Minora and Formentera.

Hyatt and soul

A video on YouTube? Thats how the 200-plus staff of the newly-opened Park Hyatt Chennai showcased themselves and the hotel to viewers

Waiters in masks. Masseurs in wigs. Chefs playing air guitar. The Park Hyatt Chennai has just opened with a big virtual splash.

A video of the hotels 200-plus staff recently made a debut on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. Titled From Ibiza to Chennai (signifying how the chains hotels span the globe), it led viewers through the hotel, guided by earnestly dancing staff outfitted with zany accessories. A relatively long video by YouTube standards it comprised nine and a half minutes of flash mobs, B-boying and exaggerated pouty poses. All held together by Chris Browns Beautiful People, illustrated by flambing chefs, bottle-juggling bar tenders and break dancing managers in meticulous suits.

Park Hyatt Chennais General Manager Yann Gillet, a self-confessed tech-addict and social media fan, who shot the video with his handy camera says he stuck to a lip-dub to showcase the staff, and enable them to guide viewers through the new hotel. (A Lip Dub is a style of music video recording that combines lip synching and audio dubbing. Its generally done in one single shot that travels through different rooms of a building.) Hence the video also functions as a guide to the property. Which makes it an unusual unveiling. Mainly because nobody has seen the Park Hyatt yet, says Yann. We have been keeping the interiors a secret. We wanted the staff to show the hotel to the world. They are the soul of the hotel, after all. Through them you discover The Apartment, peep into the Flying Elephant restaurant, look into the lobby

Discussing the making of the video, Yann says, I recorded it on my handycam. Nothing fancy. It was just an amateur video we shot at 6 a.m., edited by evening and uploaded immediately. Nevertheless, it took four weeks of work. People would practise during their lunch breaks, and after their shifts. Choreographed by Tamanna Yadav, the hotels Training Officer, along with the HR team, the lip-dub shows off all the hotels in-house dancers. You just got that in your DNA, smiles Yann, Everyone here is a great dancer. Me? I have two left feet. He adds, We also have a really young staff. The average age here is 26. And they love to party! The shoot begins with the HR department and then moves through sales and finance, housekeeping, front office, the spa Everyone is in the video, says Yann, There isnt a single person working here who is left out.

Its important to him, he says, because the central idea was to have a final party before the Park Hyatt was handed over to its guests. As hoteliers, we are always on stage. We are actors. The only time we can relax is when there are no guests around. He adds, We decided to debut it at a fantastic party, which we did. We screened the video the night before the hotel opened. And it was great. Everyone was dancing and singing along with it People love seeing themselves on screen!

The lip-dubs also Yanns signature. I did one in South Africa, to celebrate the World Cup. (He was previously at the Hyatt Regency in Johannesburg.)

Chennai to Ibiza is unexpectedly working out to be an effective advertisement, even though Yann says it was not really targeted at potential guests. Its created quite a buzz on Facebook, he says. There have been almost 1300 views on You Tube so far. Yanns hoping it will end up being an effective recruitment tool. Chennai is not the sexiest destination, he says, talking of how it can be challenging to find people willing to relocate to this city. I want people to see this and think, We can move because it looks like its a lot of fun working there.
