Science journal could give recipe for deadly avian flu virus

A scientist engineered the avian flu virus to make it more deadly to mammals.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

(CNN) -- A science journal is poised to publish a study that some experts believe could give a recipe to bioterrorists.

The study is from an experiment by a Dutch scientist who engineered the avian flu virus to make it more deadly to mammals by making it spread through the air.

That experiment was funded by the U.S. government, and it has sparked a passionate debate among scientists. Part of that debate is over where this research could lead, and whether it is worth it.

The National Institutes of Health and some scientists say it is worth it. They say it could ultimately protect mankind by trying to anticipate how the virus could mutate to one that causes a pandemic -- like the one in the film "Contagion."

Dr. Anthony Fauci heads the NIH agency that funds infectious diseases research. It funded the controversial Dutch experiment.

"We need as scientists and health officials to stay one step ahead of the virus as it mutates and changes its capability," Fauci told CNN Radio recently. "To anticipate that would be important to determine whether the countermeasures we have available, such as antivirals and vaccines, would actually be effective against such a virus that changed in such a way."

But a number of scientists are stepping forward to say it is not worth it -- and that this research could actually bring us closer to that nightmare.

CFT: 3 more Razorbacks arrested, charged

A woeful offseason for Arkansas off the field continues Saturday, with word that a couple more Razorbacks have found themselves on the wrong side of the law.

According to ArkansasNews.com, three UA football players were arrested this afternoon and charged with residential burglary. The three facing charges are wide receivers Marquel Wade and Maudrecus Humphrey and redshirt freshman tight end Andrew Peterson.

The trio was booked intothe Washington County Detention Center on the single charge each earlier today.

There are no details available as to what led to the arrests, nor has the school commented on the development.

Wade, Humphrey and Peterson are the fourth, fifth and sixth UA football players arrested since the middle of March on charges ranging from felony theft of property (offensive linemanJason Peacock) to possession of a controlled substance/paraphernalia (wide receiverMichael Whitehurst) to aggravated burglary and theft of property (linebackerTyler Gilbert). Additionally, Bobby Petrino was ousted as head coach for, well, ya know, while another wide receiver, Quinta Funderburk, and another linebacker, Brock Haman, decided to transferout of the program.

Also, starting linebacker linebackerAlonzo Highsmithmissed all of spring practice with a left pec injury, and his status for the start of the 2012 season remains up in the air.

Other than that, its been a relatively quiet offseason in Fayetteville.

As far as the latest players arrested are concerned, Wade, a sophomore, had eight receptions for 62 yards last year, while Humphrey, a junior, had one catch for nine yards. Both players were listed as No. 2 wide receivers on UAs pre-spring depth chart.

Peterson redshirted as a true freshman last season.

Streaks lose ugly to Richwoods

Many words in the dictionary could describe the Galesburg High School baseball teams game against Peoria Richwoods in the Cardinal Classic on Friday afternoon.

Silver Streaks coach Arnie Gonzalez used one word in his post-game press conference. Ugly is the only way to describe todays 8 to 5 loss to Richwoods (7-17), he said. Yes, Im upset, but not because we lost, but its how we lost.

We had a complete letdown in all phases of the game. We came in after handling them twice in the past week and half thinking they would just roll over, he added. I told the players it doesnt work like that way. Everyone will be out for us not only as the number one seed but also because we are the Silver Streaks.

Chans Sugden got the start for the Streaks and ran into immediate problems in the bottom of the first inning. After a lead-off hit, Sugden retired the next two batters and had a 1-2 count on the Knights Zach Boland when he hung a curve and Richwoods starting pitcher doubled to left plating the first run. It looked like Sugden would out of the inning allowing just the one run, but a throwing error on a routine ground ball with two outs by third baseman Drew Diaz kept the inning alive and resulted in three unearned runs.

The Knights scored three more times on five hits in batting around in the third against Sugden to make it 7-0. Gonzalez took him out with two outs and the bases loaded in the inning. Ian Milligan came out of the bullpen to retire the first man he faced on one pitch.

I may have gone with Chans a little too long, Gonzalez said. The problem was were a little short on arms right now and have two more games.

Luke Ryan didnt make the trip because of illness, while Drake Sykes and Colton Crain are still nursing injuries.

Millie did a heck of a job keeping them in check, Gonzalez said. He gave us a chance, but unfortunately we had dug ourselves into too big of a hole.

Milligan held the Knights hitless in his 3 1/3 innings of work. The run the Knights scored off the hard-throwing right-hander resulted from a walk, two stolen bases and a balk.

Galesburg (23-8) finally broke through against Boland, who ended up going the distance while throwing close to 140 pitches.
