Local cagers dot all-league teams

'Tis the season for fantasy baseball if you haven't done so already, Freud recommends San Francisco's Madison Bumgarner as a nice addition to your pitching staff but try this on for size.

If you were putting together a fantasy team of local high school basketball, who's your starting five for the boys? There are three strong candidates at point guard alone. Shooting guard? Eagle Valley could put two guys there alone easily, yet Vail Christian has a pretty good two-guard.

Forwards? OMG, as the kids might thumb.

There was no shortage of excellent players both boys and girls locally and the all-league rolls confirm it. We take you through it.

Eagle Valley

The Devils boys got five total selections, but I have two questions. Eagle Valley has only two first-teamers congratulations to Tim Wells and Cooper Senn while Delta had four and Steamboat Springs three? And where in the wide, wide world of sports is point-guard Juan Baca?

Answering the first question, stats are a big part of postseason awards, and Delta's fast-break system produces players with numbers, while the Devils' defense-first makes for a much, more balanced offense. But Steamboat with three guys on the first team from a 5-7 squad and only two from a school that went 10-2 in the Slope and tied for a league title?

Harumph.

Why Baca got no all-league recognition is beyond me. Were the coaches watching the same games I did? You're all-league in my book, Juan.

As for the first-teamers, Wells represents Eagle Valley's deadly perimeter game, and the senior also had a tendency to get hot at the right time ripping off a bunch of points in a very short period of time. Senn is a good selection, even though the numbers probably don't show it. He's a defensive rock.

Honest taxi driver hailed by DOT as Model of Fun

A March 29, 2012 press release from the Department of Tourism

Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Ramon R. Jimenez Jr. lauds the good gesture of Sotero Canonoy, a taxi driver who surrendered a bag left by three male German tourists whom he ferried from SM Mall of Asia to NAIA Terminal 1 on March 23 at about 10:00 p.m.

This is one happy piece of news that we need to hear more of. Mr. Canonoys action exemplifies the innate goodness of our countrymen. It gives support to the positive image we wish to portray through our Its more fun in the Philippines campaign. We want to highlight these good news as normal than unusual, Jimenez said.

The incident was first reported on March 26 during GMA7s Aksyon Ora Mismo and repeated over other public service programs of the network. It was through yesterdays morning report over DZBB that the information reached the DOT. Mr. Canonoy was said to have turned over the bag which contained a laptop, PSP, cell phone, wristwatch, some clothes, and medicines. His mother, Nanay Cita, who was a participant in the first Survivor Philippines Castaway reality TV series, suggested that they seek assistance from the network to make public the find, as well as to help trace the owners. Efforts are now focused on gaining more leads from NAIA authorities and the German Embassy to determine the identities of the tourists and ensure that the belongings are returned to them.

This is what we mean by tourism is everybodys business. Each little good thing adds up to the fun picture of Philippine tourism. And as important as the first impression upon arrival are the good memories that a visitor brings with him until he departs. In this particular case, the DOT is pleased to note that the DZBB team perseveres in helping resolve this matter. We all are part of the tourism experience as we all are likewise, beneficiaries. We all need to do our share of good, for tourism to make a dent in our economy and in our respective lives, Secretary Jimenez said.

The DOT enjoins everybody to share more good news through the agencys Twitter (@DOTPhilippines) and Facebook (Department of Tourism) accounts, as well as through its new campaign website itsmorefuninthephilippines.com.

Internet cafe bill proposed

COLUMBUS - Legislation proposed by a local lawmaker Wednesday would regulate Internet cafes statewide by putting them under the oversight of the Ohio Gaming Commission, which could charge more than $25,000 a year for licensing fees.

State Sen. Joe Schiavoni, D-Canfield, on Wednesday proposed the legislation for Internet sweepstakes cafes that have popped up throughout the Mahoning Valley. There are an estimated 30 in the area.

The legislation would require an independent laboratory to inspect all gaming software used; require operators to be inspected, licensed and regulated; and require the operators to prominently display the odds of winning on the game terminals, among other regulations.

The 70-page bill also would allow local municipalities to create their own set of regulations and fees.

"The purpose of the bill isn't to shut these businesses down," Schiavoni said. "It's to regulate them like any other gaming facility. If Ohioans want to still go to these places as a form of entertainment and local municipalities decide they want to have them around, then let's continue to have them operate as long they follow the rules."

Schiavoni said he believes his bill will be more appealing to state legislators than a bill proposed in April by Reps. Nan Baker and Marlene Anielski that sought to eliminate cash prizes.

"That would kill their business," Schiavoni said. "If that was the case, they might as well just shut their doors."

That proposal stalled in the House. Schiavoni said he hopes his bill can be passed by the end of the summer.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, who worked with Schiavoni on the bill, has said he believes some Internet cafes constitute gambling. In Akron, he helped investigate an Internet cafe owner who eventually was sentenced 20 days in jail, and helped raid three Internet cafes in Warren last September. The seven owners and operators are facing gambling charges that could land them in jail for up to six months.

The difference between illegal establishments and legal ones, prosecutors say, is the amount of cash prizes a customer can win from playing the sweepstakes game offered by the businesses and if the games they provide are games of chance, rather than skill-based games.

Buffalo, N.Y.-based guitarist to play Noontime concert

March 29, 2012

As an independent artist, Sam Brenner has acted as his own manager, booking agent and webmaster, but he still manages to be the type of musician the audience wants to get to know.

Brenner, 24, who will perform at the Student Programming Associations Noontime concert series Friday, said one of his biggest challenges is acting as both a small business owner and a musician.

His performance will begin at 12 p.m. in the HUB-Robeson Center.

Brenner, a native of Buffalo, N.Y., said he began playing guitar when he was 12. He then started singing and writing pop-rock songs influenced by musicians like Paul Simon and James Taylor when he was about 16 or 17.

While Brenner mostly plays original songs, he said he also includes a few covers on songs by artists like Rihanna, Michael Jackson and the Dave Matthews Band in his set list.

Adam Gibson, owner of the Acoustic Moose Caf, 516 Lincoln Ave. in Bellevue, said Brenner recently played at the venue, and his personality is one of his best attributes.

Hes an incredibly talented musician, Gibson said. But what makes him great is that he engages with the crowd. He has a natural stage presence.

The first time Brenner played at the Acoustic Moose was on a Wednesday to a small crowd, but when he returned for the second time, he returned on a weekend to a crowd double the original crowds size.

Gibson said the audience, who was engaged in the musicians show, was hanging on his every word. After the show, Brenner even took the time to get to know his fans by talking and joking with audience members, Gibson added.
