The SEC has just given companies carte blancheto issue important news announcements on their Twitter and Facebook (NASDAQ: FB) feeds -- maybe even on Google's Google+ service, if anyone still uses that.

On the one hand, this is a bonanza for the social networkers, who can expect to reap big business from more active use of their sites. It's also good news for corporate PR folk, who can reach more customers and investors through social media -- not just with corporate news, but with corporate advertising.

Gartner: Only 10 percent of social networking roll-outs succeed

Although social networking technologies are employed by 70 percent of organisations, only 10 percent are successful at using them as most take a "provide and pray" approach, says analyst Gartner.

Gartner studied the social collaboration initiatives taken by 1,000 organisations around the world, and found the poor 10 percent success rate.

"Without a well-crafted and compelling purpose most social media initiatives will fail to deliver business value," said Gartner analyst Anthony Bradley. "A provide and pray approach provides access to a social collaboration technology and prays something good comes of it, like a community forming and participants' interactions naturally delivering business value."

Bradley said: "This approach sees a poor success rate and the underlying reason is usually that the organisation did not provide a compelling cause around which a community could form, and be motivated to provide their time and knowledge. In other words, a purpose was lacking."

Gartner has identified some characteristics of a good social networking roll-out:

Participant magnetism - The purpose should naturally motivate people to participate. This is the "what's in it for me" characteristic. Users should easily grasp its importance and the value of participating.

Community draw - The purpose must resonate with enough people to catalyse a community and deliver robust user-generated content. The best communities are heavily unbalanced in their two-way approaches, meaning that the community contributes far more content than the supporting enterprise.

Organisational value - The purpose should have a clear business outcome. This is the "what's in it for the organisation" characteristic. Choose purposes where organisational value can be clearly measured and shared with the community.

Promoting evolution - Select purposes that you and the community can build on.

Gartner analysts will examine how enterprise architecture can help deliver successful business outcomes from social, mobile and cloud platforms at the Gartner Enterprise Architecture Summit in London on 14-15 May.

Facebook to start charging users to contact celebrities

(Relaxnews) - Facebook has started charging UK users to contact celebrities through the social network.

The site has begun charging users up to 11 (12.95 euros) to send messages to celebrites on the social networking site and people outside of their circle of friends, reported several British newspapers including the Guardian and the Independent on Monday, April 8.

According to reports the scheme will still allow users to communicate with friends and friends-of-friends but it will now cost a varying amount to contact others such as celebrities.

According to reports, prices range from 71 pence (0.83) to contact people who are not "friends" or "friends of friends" -- including lesser-known celebrities or at least those with a smaller following on the site, such as BBC journalist Robert Preston -- to 10.68 (12.57 euros) to contact celebrities such as Olympic swimmer Tom Daley.

Reports indicate that while Facebook has confirmed the launch of this scheme among UK users it has not yet decided whether or not it will be rolled out across the social network.

In January Facebook caused a stir by debating charging users up to $100 to contact founder Mark Zuckerberg and trialed a scheme involving Facebook Messages in the USA, charging users $1 to ensure that a message would reach another user's inbox even if the two users were not connected. EA treading into social networking territory?

The game maker known for Medal of Honor and Mass Effects launches a social networking app that has nothing to do with games -- instead it lets users share photos paired with music.

EA launches mobile social network called Vue.

Gaming company Electronic Arts has come out with something totally new -- a free music and photo social networking app called Vue.

No, it's not a social network focused game. It's simply a social network.

The question is -- why did a gaming company create a social networking app? It's not yet entirely clear. According to Venture Beat, it is a "low-budget exploratory project" started by EA Partners group.

EA is in the middle of a leadership transition after the company's CEO John Riccitiello resigned from his position at the company last month. "We have mutually agreed that this is the right time for a leadership transition," EA executive chairman Larry Probst said at the time of Riccitiello's resignation. It's unclear if Riccitiello had much to do with the creation of Vue.
