Call to clamp down on 'gay' word

Call to clamp down on 'gay' word

5:43am Saturday 12th October 2013 in National News Press Association 2013

Chart star Will Young has said more should be done to clamp down on homophobic language and the use of the word "gay" as an insult in schools.

The Leave Right Now singer said he had even taken up the issue with Education Secretary Michael Gove who he said had been "encouraging".

Young drew attention to his concerns writing in the Independent On Sunday this weekend, as the paper publishes its annual Pink List of powerful gay and lesbian figures.

The Pop Idol winner, who came out shortly after winning the show and has gone on to have an enduring music career, said the issue had to be addressed.

He writes: "A few months ago I attended a teachers/education conference at the Barbican organised by Stonewall.

"Through the various seminars I attended I picked up one recurring theme, teachers and heads of schools were more than often not backed up by local authorities when it came to homophobic language.

"Michael Gove attended the conference and I put it to him that this use of the word gay as a derogatory form of description HAD to be addressed. His reaction, I was pleased to say, was attentive and encouraging. Let's see words turn into actions Michael."

The Pink List 2013 will see broadcaster Clare Balding - who was awarded an OBE this year - ranked as the highest placed celebrity when she is placed at number two when it is published on Sunday.

"The book explains the importance and power of words to the individual," states the author. "It explains that words are containers, vehicles that carry and transport faith and fear, love and hate, life and death. Many people are victims of the words of their mouths, and they do not know it."

Pastor Mary I. Ehichioya is a born again, Spirit-filled, matured daughter of the Most High God. She shares, "Early in my Christian life, my Heavenly Father, permitted me to go through an experience that taught me faith in the ever living and awesome God of all creation. I have come to know that the Word of God is true and powerful; that there is an eternally defeated devil out there, who still tries to deceive people. The full story of my experience is published in 'PRESERVED BY GRACE: HOW I OVERCAME THE FORCES OF DARKNESS.'"

New Ann Coulter book rages at GOP with ‘change or die’ theme

Best-selling conservative author Ann Coulter, who has used her nine books to launch vicious attacks on Democrats, is turning her guns on Republicans in a new book out Monday, calling Florida Sen. Marco Rubio a hypocrite, urging donors freeze contributions to the GOP, and demanding that only governors or senators run for the partys presidential nomination.

Her point in Never Trust a Liberal Over 3 -- Especially a Republican is to shake the party out of its doldrums in time for the 2014 and 2016 elections.

Elections matter. Were trying to make the country a better place. But if our candidates dont win, we cant do that, she writes. This isnt a game. We arent picking basketball brackets. Bad things happen when Republicans lose elections and Democrats have veto-proof majorities, she adds in the book provided in advance to Secrets.

While she is most noted for skewering liberals in her weekly columns and nine previous New York Times best sellers, Never Trust puts her on a path for a head-on collision with the establishment Republican Party and even a favored 2016 presidential candidate as she urges the GOP to purge itself of failed tactics, lazy consultants, and gripless potential candidates.

Take Rubio. He is one of the partys leading 2016 candidates, but Coulter dresses him down for promising effective immigration reform while campaigning for the Senate but spitting out a more liberal alternative once elected.

She quotes him slamming amnesty for illegal immigrants as a Senate candidate in 2010. And then he got to Washington and his big legislative initiative was a path to citizenship for illegal aliens! Yes, Rubios plan to solve the problem of illegal immigration from Mexico is to bring them all here, she scolds.

The fashionable pundit pummels the party for wooing untested politicians for president. Why are any congressmen or businessmen showing up in our presidential primaries? They are never going to get the nomination, she says.

The solution is a governor, just like four of the last six presidents. I dont care if it makes you feel good, conservatives: Do not ever, ever considering running a presidential candidate who has not been a senator or preferably a governor. No, not even our beloved Ben Carson. What are we concentrating on? Thats right: winning.

Ditto for House and Senate seats. Stop being stupid, she urges the party, singling out failed candidates like former Rep. Todd Akin, who lost a recent Missouri Senate bid when he talked about legitimate rape.

And to grab that gold ring, she demands that musty political consultants be swept out of the GOP. She blames them for losing four Senate seats the Republicans thought they should have won in 2010 and 2012.
