Twitter Downgraded by Macquarie After Almost Tripling Since IPO

Related

Twitter Inc. (TWTR) fell the most since it debuted on the New York Stock Exchange after Macquarie Capital downgraded the social-networking company, saying the stock has gone too far, too fast.

The shares of the microblogging service fell 13 percent to $63.75 at the close in New York. The stock had almost tripled through yesterday since a Nov. 6 initial public offering.

Ben Schachter, an analyst at Macquarie in New York, lowered his rating from neutral to underperform -- the equivalent of sell. The shares have jumped 40 percent since Macquarie initiated coverage on Dec. 11, without any improvement in Twitters fundamentals, Schachter said in a report.

We continue to believe that Twitter as a company has a bright future and many opportunities ahead, he said. However, as a stock, we believe nothing has changed over the last 15 days to justify the rise in valuation.

The recent rally has put shares of San Francisco-based Twitter well above Schachters 12-month price target of $46.

The unprofitable company was valued at $41.6 billion as of yesterdays close, making it larger than Time Warner Cable Inc. (TWC), Viacom Inc. (VIAB) or Target Corp. (TGT) Investors expect Twitter to benefit from a surge of mobile-advertising sales. Still, the wide discrepancies in analyst revenue estimates have raised concerns, Schachter said. Twitters IPO had a relatively small number of underwriters, leading to a situation where more than a dozen banks initiated coverage without getting detailed guidance from management, he said.

Facebook? What’s that, granddad? Teenagers fall out of love with Zuckerberg’s social network

Once the darling of the social networking world, it looks as though Facebook is falling out of favor. At least that seems to be the case with teenagers. An extensive and ongoing study into social media finds that huge swathes of 16 to 18 year-olds are abandoning Facebook and jumping ship to the likes of Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat. In total, nine different regions are being studied over a course of 15 months.

As Professor of Material Culture at University College London, Daniel Miller says, Facebook is now uncool. Mum and Dad are now not only using the social network (which is an immediate nail in the coffin), but actively encouraging their kids to share details about what they're doing: "Parents have worked out how to use the site and see it as a way for the family to remain connected".

While the likes of Whatsapp have exploded in popularity none of the alternatives which are attracting younger users offer quite the same set of options as Facebook. Instagram is great for sharing photos, but in terms of organization and interaction, it is found wanting. Snapchat and Twitter have their plus points, but lack a lot of functionality.

Which social networks do you align yourself with? Have you found that your preferences have changed over the years or do you stick ruggedly to whichever network you first used? I was something of a lurker on Facebook for a couple of years before becoming fully immersed in it. At 34, I probably fit neatly into the average demographic and I like the network because it offers a nice combination of instant communication and slower, laid-back newsy style.

Twitter was more of a slowburner for me. Again, I signed up for an account pretty much as soon as it was possible to do so, and then did little for some time. Twitter bemused me, and I couldnt see the point. Then I experimented and found that it blended blogging, instant messaging and news delivery in one neat package. I'm now in love. Force me to choose two networks to use and Twitter and Facebook would win without question, but choosing between these two to pick a winner would be hard.

Killer Cold Virus (Adenovirus Infection, Ad14) (cont.)

What is the treatment for an Adenovirus 14 (Ad14) infection?

Treatment for Ad14 infection in most people consists of supportive care (rest, fluids, and fever reduction) because many people do well and have no problems. However, the Ad14 infections that progress require more intensive care; about 40% have required hospitalization in some outbreaks and some require respiratory assistance (intubation or mechanical breathing support) and intensive care. Mortality (death) rate has been as high as 5% in some settings. There are many reports of use of antivirals in severe Ad14 infections, but there are no good studies that support specific antivirals. Some benefits of antivirals such as ribavirin (Rebetol, Copegus) and cidofovir (Vistide) have been documented in ill patients; in severe cases, clinicians may try such agents because there is no other treatment other than supportive care. The effectiveness of antiviral medications is not been well studied in Ad14 infections. Consultation with an infectious disease, pulmonary, or ophthalmologist consultant, depending where the severe infection is located, is advised.

For patients who require no hospitalization or treatment, most patients have no complications. However, complications may be mild to dire if the Ad14 disease progresses and the complication types are related to the organ system(s) bearing the most severe infection. Complications include bronchitis, conjunctivitis, pneumonia, meningitis, hepatitis, bladder infection (cystitis), diarrhea, ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome), and death.
