The Foreign Office rejected an invitation to stage a prestigious event in Britain celebrating Press freedom prompting suspicion the Government feared further criticism over its Royal Charter on Press regulation.

United Nations agency UNESCO asked to hold its World Press Freedom Day, one of the aims of which is to defend the media from attacks on their independence, in London for the first time this year.

But the Foreign Office said no, saying it had not been given enough notice for the event, which has an expected attendance of 400 to 500 people.

Yesterday a source close to the arrangements said: The British are saying the reasons are logistical but it seems obvious this could not be held in Britain without the problems over the Royal Charter being highlighted internationally.

You might well think the Government was afraid it would get a black eye. But they are now facing two black eyes.

UNESCO is now considering holding the event in Morocco, where Press law prohibits criticism of the monarchy and effectively bars independent coverage of taboo subjects such as the military, national security, religion and sexuality.

A Press Room salute to the memorable Tom Hall

Influential voice touched lives and hearts of many

Friends leave their sentiments for the late Tom Hall during a Saturday afternoon event at the Press Room.Ralph Morang photo

PORTSMOUTH Tom Hall's friend Bruce MacIntyre quoted Hall saying, "If you want to be in the community, be the center of it." Tom Hall had certainly achieved that status; it was said many times in many ways Saturday afternoon at a gathering to remember him.

Tom Hall died last November at age 71, a fixture at the Press Room where he sang, played and talked during Friday night traditional music sessions and monthly Saturday sea shanty singarounds with fellow musicians for 30 years. That music community celebrated Hall's life in word and music at the Press Room on Saturday.

With Hall's widow, Linn Schulz, sitting at the front, Emery Hutchins introduced speakers and musicians who had played with Hall, had been mentored by Hall, had been friends with Hall some even acknowledging that their singing had been critiqued by Hall.

Some called themselves "Tom Groupies." They definitely skewed toward retirement age, dressed in jeans and khakis, with a generous display of plaids and wool and cloth hats.

The first to speak was Raelene Shippee-Rice, who said, "When I think of someone like Tom leaving us, the universe should halt. The universe should resonate with song and music in acknowledgement of Tom Hall."

Many in the audience sang with those on stage, joining in with Paul Schurr's rendition of The Watersons' "Chickens in the Garden," and with Bob Eaton on "Steady Boys Walk On."

"This will be our last trip home, so steady boys, walk on," Eaton sang.

Lauren Orlen of Concord brought her 1984 Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School yearbook, which was dedicated to Tom Hall. He taught social studies. Lauren said, "As many said on Facebook, he was always available."

New SRA Technology detects atrial fibrillation at an early stage and prevents strokes

- Results of a multicenter study including 225 participants just published. Study Sponsor: Sanofi-Aventis, Study conduction: Cardiology Platform Hessen

- SRA-Technology from apoplex medical convinces in the detection of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation - information about a risk for a threatening stroke prepares the way for early diagnose and preventive measures

Apoplex, Geratherm, Pirmasens, 3 March 2014. Cardiological practices in Hessen investigated in a multicenter study including 225 participants over three years the use of a SRA (Stroke Risk Analysis)-based ECG analysis for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. The SRA-procedure developed by apoplex medical technologies GmbH, Pirmasens, analyses ECG data fully automatic with the goal, to detect atrial fibrillation at an early stage for preventing threatening strokes by applying appropriate therapeutic measures.

The results of the study were published on 28 February 2014 by the journal PLOS ONE in San Francisco, USA. The study, sponsored by Sanofi-Aventis, compares conventional ECG examinations with the SRA procedure under conditions of the daily routine in doctor's practices. In 23 from 54 patients without fibrillation episodes, SRA detected a risk for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (sensitivity 42.6%, specificity 99.0%). Conventional ECG analysis did not indicate atrial fibrillation in these cases. Cardiologically confirmed fibrillation episodes were detected with a sensitivity of 99.2% and a specificity of 99.2%. With these results in the context of a cardiological study, the SRA-technology has impressively proven its excellent performance to detect unknown paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.
