Trinamool Congress 'throttling' democracy in WB: Tripura CM

Guwahati | Updated 4/22/2014 9:45:32 AM IST

Guwahati: Charging Trinamool Congress with throttling democracy in West Bengal by intimidating voters, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar today said the Left will do better in the state if polling is done without any fear.

He also said that TMC's dream to create a base in Tripura "will never be true."

"Democracy is being throttled in West Bengal by Trinamool Congress. In three years of their rule, 145 Left leaders were killed, 44,000 Left supporters were forced to leave their homes and our organisational structures were burnt to ashes," the CPI(M) Politburo member alleged.

People were being threatened to shift their political allegiance and could not vote in a free and fair manner during the panchayat elections also, he alleged.

"However, we are seeing a positive sign. People have started reacting to the call of alternative forces. The silver lining is that, if people come out to vote without fear, then we will perform much better than the last Lok Sabha elections," Sarkar told PTI in an interview.

On post-poll alliances with parties, the senior CPI(M) leader said the Left was open to non-Congress and non-BJP parties, including with Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). PTI

Socialism didnt start with this president

After reading an article in the Other Voices column about the 10 steps to socialism, when do any of you think this started in 2008? That is a laugh. It just means that you arent paying attention until someone is in office that you dont think represents your interests.

It all started a long time before the two presidents who decided that their friends werent rich enough. The president isnt the one who makes the rules. It is the 500 and some people that have more control over the government than he has.

Anyway, as I remember, there was only one of those programs started of should I say on the wish list of the current president. That would be affordable health care.

The others came before he was in office or maybe before he was even thought of. Oh, by he way, it is time for another round of political promises to be made then broken. Yes, it is election time again and that means it would be time to eliminate some more worthless people from government. Dont get me wrong, I have never said that they were all bad, just some of them.

After my last letter, one of my friends said it was a good letter but he didnt think that it did any good. I cant tell you if it did or didnt, it all depends on whether people pay attention. I do, however, think that a couple of them have made a difference.

I also think that not very many people paid too much attention to their history classes in school, otherwise they would know more about the political process. As I always had a big interest in history, I paid attention.

While people are so sure that all of this seems to have started with this current administration, maybe they should look back to where free trade started, then to a few administrations after that, especially the father and son act that was previous to this administration.

I dont think that anybody would ever suspect that family would do anything wrong. I see that another brother wants the job.
