Milbank: Republicans kiss votes from women goodbye

McAllister, called the Duck Dynasty congressman because of his defense of the Robertson familys Christian values, issued a statement asking for forgiveness from God, his family, his staff and constituents, and he declared that he still plans to run for reelection. And the woman, a part-timer paid less than $22,000 a year who also received $300 from McAllister to clean out his campaign office? She was terminated as the story broke, the congressmans chief of staff told another Louisiana paper.

It takes chutzpah to observe Equal Pay Day by sacking the low-wage employee youve been snogging.

Thus did Eric Cantor, the House majority leader, find himself fielding a question about McAllister at a news conference that was meant to highlight the partys pro-women efforts. Im glad he issued an apology, Cantor said, reserving further judgment on whether the kissing congressman, who has been in office for less than five months, should quit.

Republicans arent responsible for McAllister any more than Democrats are to blame for Anthony Weiners weirdness. But for Republicans, who have a big disadvantage among unmarried women, this reinforces a perception. The Democrats accusation of a GOP war on women sticks not because of what Democrats say but because of what Republicans do and the big problems arent personal pratfalls but rather public policy.

In his news conference, Cantor repeatedly called on Democrats to put the politics aside and talk with Republicans about things that we can do together, things that disproportionately impact women, without playing politics.

In the Senate, where Democrats were daring Republicans to vote against equal-pay legislation, Republican leader Mitch McConnell, who is likely to face a female Democratic challenger in November, told Democrats to drop all the show votes.

Democrats are indeed making partisan attempts to embarrass Republicans on issues important to women. The coordinated actions being taken, including President Obamas signing of executive orders Tuesday to expose pay disparities by gender among federal contractors, are largely symbolic. The disparity is stubborn. According to the American Enterprise Institute, the 229 women who work in the White House are paid 88 cents on the dollar compared with the 232 men who do, a finding not disputed by the administration.

But when one side complains that the other is playing politics, its a safe bet that those doing the complaining are losing. Cantor and McConnell dont seem to grasp that the war-on-women accusations arent made in a vacuum; they gain traction because of proposals Republicans are advancing.

Consider Paul Ryans budget, which the House is debating this week. Among those functions of government the Republican congressman from Wisconsin would cut, many disproportionately benefit women, according to the National Womens Law Center.

For example, Medicaid (about 70 percent of adult recipients are women), food stamps (63 percent of adult recipients are women) and Pell grants (62 percent) would be cut. Then there are programs in categories that would face cuts Ryan hasnt specified: Supplemental Security Income (two-thirds of the poor and elderly recipients are women), welfare (85 percent of adult recipients are women), housing vouchers (82 percent of recipient households headed by women), child-care assistance (75 percent female-headed households) and the Women, Infants and Children nutrition program.

Who owns the term social justice conservatives or progressives?

Utahs progressives desperately hope you say they do. Theyve built their entire 2014 campaign around a slew of traditional social justice issues the minimum wage, entitlements and more taxes on the wealthy. Their argument is simple: Their social justice policies will make a dent in the states 12.8 percent poverty rate and make the economy more fair. Its the right thing to do.

Not so fast. It stands to reason that President Obamas 5 years in office would back up the lefts claims. After all, hes promoted more social justice policies than perhaps any president since LBJ or FDR. Surely his actions would have borne some fruit for Americas neediest.

It hasnt happened. Since he took office, the wealthy have been the only ones to gain ground. The percentage of Americans in the workforce has fallen to its lowest level since 1970. One in six Americans is now on food stamps. And income inequality has grown even as the president and his party have tried to stop it.

How could this happen under a social justice president?

The simple fact is that intentions dont equal results. The lefts policies arent working which means its time for conservatives to step up to the social justice plate.

Conservatives should start by asking the downtrodden what they need most. In the conversations Ive had over the years, Ive identified three things: Moral transformation, material relief and opportunity. These are the central components of a real social justice platform.

Missing $20bn riddle

Mallam Lamido Sanusi

The All Progressives Congress advertorial on page 20 of The PUNCH of Monday, April 7, 2014, is highly commendable. Nigerians should not keep silent on issues directly or indirectly affecting us. We should clearly express our views and demand our rights. We should not fold our arms and watch as the so-called rulers ruin our future.

The inappropriate silence and inaction of the President on this issue and which, perhaps, led to the suspension of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi, probably indicate he knows something about, along with some other people at the helm of affairs, the disappearance of the said $20billion oil money. Not $20million, not N20billion. Twenty billion dollars!

Considering the salient facts raised in the said advert, Nigerians really should not leave the matter alone. We should ask questions when our leaders are not doing the right thing. They should be held accountable for their actions.

Lagos APC members protest ward congresses

Some members of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State, on Wednesday stormed the partys secretariat, protesting a publication that excluded their wards in the ward congress re-run elections in the state.

The protesters, who came from various wards across the state, were seen chanting songs, displaying placards, demanding justice and fair play from the party.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the re-runs publication, which was carried by some national dailies, was accredited to the Dr Garuba Abari-led APC Congresses Committee.

According to the publication, the party has fixed re-run congresses in some wards in the state.

Out of the 377 wards where congresses were held on April 5, the committee declared re-run in 102 wards, slated for April 10.

It will be recalled that disagreements, controversies and protests had trailed the ward congresses, resulting in the committee scheduling the re-run in areas where elections were considered inconclusive.

However, Mr Great Jonathan, from Ward B, Ikeja Local Government Area, who led the protest, told NAN that his ward was not included for the re-run even when congress did not hold there.

We sent in our petition just like others and we are shocked to see the publication this morning announcing re-run in some wards and excluding our ward.

We will go to any level to protests this marginalisation, he said.

Mr Benson Adepoju, from Kosofe Council Ward F, said their protest was for being included for re-run after the committee had issued them return certificate for winning in the congress.
