Resolution supporting Second Amendment passed

VANCEBURG | Lewis County Fiscal Court recently passed a resolution in support of the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution.

The Second Amendment states, "a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Judge-Executive Todd Ruckel said he felt the county needed to show support for the Second Amendment.

"I felt it was something we needed to do," Ruckel said.

The resolution says the government of Lewis County affirms support for the Constitution, particularly the Second Amendment, and no ordinances will be passed within Lewis County that restrict ownership of firearms, ammunition or components of firearms.

The resolution comes months after the creation of a Lewis County branch of the Friends of the National Rifle Association was created, according to Ruckel.

The group is dedicated to supporting education on firearm safety to youth.

"We raise money to help support the education to the youth," Ruckel, who is a member of the group, said. "It provides for education on safety and property firearm usages."

Ruckel said he believes the Lewis County group was created around December.

U.S. Government to explore smart guns, Cornyn objects

The Department of Justice wants to explore tracking technology in its gun-control efforts. Second amendment rights supporters fear this will lead to the creation of a gun registry. Senator John Cornyn is stepping in.

Trackingpoint of Pflugerville manufactures some of the most technically-advanced guns in the world. Their precision guided firearms allow hunters to set a target and fire without missing no matter the elements.

Spokesman Oren Schauble says the company will absolutely not develop, what's called a "smart gun" that would require identifiers such as a fingerprint to unlock and shoot.

"If you are a second amendment believer then you have the right to bear arms and it shouldn't be constricted or monitored and also it's offensive because it's unproven in the sense that this technology is prohibiting your use in a very specific, potentially dangerous scenario," Schauble said.

Smart guns are being manufactured both here in the U.S. and abroad. The Identilock by Sentinl requires a fingerprint to unlock and use a loaded gun. A company called Armatix out of Germany created the iP1 pistol and accompanying watch. The gun will only shoot if it is within range of the watch.

On April 4th, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder spoke of his support for the new technology.

"It's those kinds of things that I think we want to try to explore so that we can make sure that people have the ability to enjoy their Second Amendment rights, but at the same time decreasing the misuse of weapons that lead to the kinds of things that we see on a daily basis," Holder said.

The statements prompted a concerned Texas Senator John Cornyn to write a letter to Holder where he asks five questions.

Cornyn first asks if the Obama Administration is exploring the possibility of an executive order requiring all forearms to possess the technology. He also wanted to know if gun owners would be monitored.

John Woods of Texas Gun Sense who took part in rally to end gun violence in Austin Wednesday told us he supports Holder's efforts.

David Cameron is currently enjoying a holiday in Lanzarote. The British Prime Minister and his family are easy to spot on the beaches of this Canarian island: just look for the gaggle of journalists and photographers respectfully stationed a safe distance away.

The Camerons, children Arthur, Nancy and Florence, along with his wife Samantha, are staying in a converted farmhouse close to the capital of Teguise, but have been seen out and about in the town, with minimal security arrangements, enjoying coffee at pavement cafes and eating in local restaurants.

The nice thing is that he has chosen rural tourism rather than just heading for the beach, says Christian, who runs the hotel. It is thought to be the Cameron's first family holiday in the Canaries, although they have visited Ibiza and Mallorca before.

The short break has been covered extensively by the British media. The Guardian believes that Camerons low-profile approach (the family flew out on low-cost airline Ryanair) is part of a strategy designed to make him appear more down to earth than the rest of his government, and it suggests that this image of an ordinary middle-class family man goes down well with the British electorate in the run up to next years general elections.

But behind the scenes, Cameron is reported to be following events in Ukraine closely, and has spoken with Downing Street every day, as well as talking by phone to Angela Merkel.
