Missouri Republicans outline new gun proposal

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri Republicans are considering a new approach to prevent federal agents from enforcing laws the state considers to be infringements on gun rightsbarring them from future careers in state law enforcement agencies.

The change marks the most recent version of Missouris attempt to nullify some federal gun control laws. It was endorsed by a state Senate committee this past week and is likely to reach the chamber floor.

The employment ban is seen as a compromise designed to make the bill more palatable, while also making federal agents think twice before carrying out laws and policies that the measures supporters consider unconstitutional.

Republicans have been divided on how to punish potential violators of the legislation dubbed the Second Amendment Preservation Act. The spectrum has ranged from possible jail time to allowing civil damages stemming from lawsuits filed by Missourians who think an agent infringed on their gun rights.

The version endorsed by the Senate General Laws Committee would leave the civil penalties on the table in addition to the employment ban.

What we hope it accomplishes is for there to be a healthy degree of pause before anybody takes an action that could be unconstitutional, said Sen. Brian Nieves, R-Washington, and the Senate bill sponsor.

Under the measure, federal employees who enforce or aid in a potential enforcement of certain gun-control laws would be disqualified from any state and local law enforcement jobs in the future. Missourians could also sue if they think a law enforcement officer was employed after being involved in the implementation of a federal gun law. If the lawsuit is successful, the agent would be fired and the state or municipality would be required to pay the residents court costs.

Adam Vaughan to run for Liberals in Trinity-Spadina byelection: reports

Toronto Coun. Adam Vaughan is planning to run for the Liberals in the upcoming federal byelection in the downtown riding of Trinity-Spadina.

The riding was vacated by Olivia Chow when she resigned last month to run for Toronto mayor. Elections Canada hasnt announced the byelection date yet.

The federal Liberals have reportedly been courting Vaughan for several months now.

Ipsos Reid pollster John Wright said Vaughans high profile in the city and left-leaning politics will appeal to the voters in Trinity-Spadina.

It makes perfect sense. Hes going to be able to represent from not only an urban area but from a political left-of-centre area, Wright explained. Hes going to be a formidable candidate.

Vaughan is a bitter political rival of Mayor Rob Ford and his brother Coun. Doug Ford, who somewhat wished him well.

Well, I wish him luck in Ottawa but he wont be able to act as immature as he does in city hall.

If Vaughan wins the nomination, his main opponent would be NDP candidate Joe Cressy, a long-time Chow supporter. Cressy has already wished Vaughan luck on Twitter.

Are Democrats Trying To Energize The Base With The Race Card?

Attorney General Eric Holder (right) recently expressed outrage at the treatment President Obama and he have received from conservatives. He stopped just short of saying it was race-related, leaving that for the African-American audience at the recent National Action Network convention to decide.

Few mixtures in American life are more emotionally combustible than the one formed by the combination of politics and race.

That helps explain why Democrats, in general, and President Obama, in particular, have tended to steer clear of overtly raising race as an issue to explain some of the opposition to Obama's presidency and agenda.

There seems to be a shift in recent days, however.

Top Democratic party officials have either directly or indirectly blamed race for some of the hostility to Obama, his policies, or both.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the House Democratic leader from California, and New York Rep. Steve Israel, who heads the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, both cited racism, pure and simple, among some Republicans as explanations for the House GOP's resistance to legislation that would comprehensively overhaul the nation's immigration laws.

Meanwhile, Attorney General Eric Holder took a slightly subtler approach. Speaking to the National Action Network, the largely African-American civil rights group founded by the Rev. Al Sharpton, Holder suggested some Republicans had a racial animus toward the president and himself.

"The last five years have been defined by significant strides and by lasting reforms even in the face, even in the face of unprecedented, unwarranted, ugly and divisive adversity," Holder said.

"If you don't believe that, you look at the way forget about me, forget about me you look at the way the attorney general of the United States was treated yesterday by a House committee. It had nothing to do with me, forget about that. What attorney general has ever had to deal with that kind of treatment? What president has ever had to deal with that kind of treatment?"
