The Fifth Amendment also mandates that defendants, once acquitted on a charge, may not be tried again for the same offense at the same jurisdictional level. Defendants may be tried again if the previous trial ended in a mistrial or hung jury, if there is evidence of fraud in the previous trial, or if the charges are not precisely the same--for example, the police officers who beat Rodney King, after being acquitted on state charges, were convicted on federal charges for the same offense.
The best known clause in the Fifth Amendment ("No person ... shall be compelled in a criminal case to be a witness against himself") protects suspects from forced self-incrimination. When a suspect invokes his or her Fifth Amendment right to remain silent, this is referred to in the vernacular as "pleading the Fifth." It should not by any means be taken as a sign of guilt, but it is generally portrayed as such in courtroom television dramas.

Mandaue City, Cebu Some 200 Google enthusiasts, including local businessmen and marketing enthusiasts from around Cebu are expected to gather here on May 10 for a seminar focused on relevant internet tools for entrepreneurs.
Everyone in the local business scene knows the significance of Google in the worldwide web so this will be a very interesting seminar for those who want to fully capitalize on Google for their own businesses, said Wilson Ng, president and chief executive officer of Ng Khai Development Corp. in an interview yesterday.
Ng is among the speakers tapped for the event which will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lakwatsa Resto Lounge along Hernan Cortes Avenue, this city.
The event, Dubbed GDays Mandaue, will be hosted by Google Inc., and the Cebu Bloggers Society.
Bjornson Bernales, head of Google Business Group (GBG)-Mandaue said he has also invited students and young professionals interested in learning about internet marketing updates. This will be the first time that such a conference will be held here, he said, adding that some 200 participants from the business community along with entrepreneurial and marketing practitioners and even students and young professionals who may want to learn internet marketing updates.
In this conference, businesses, managers and marketers can learn the relevant tools from Google for use in businesses in operation, management and marketing. They will also gain inspiration from esteemed speakers as well as insights from invited guest speakers from Google and Google-supported communities, Bernales said.
Among the things that the participants can learn during the conference are building presence on the Web; synching with team members using collaborative tools; and advertising on the Web.
Aside from Ng, other speakers in the conference will include Ruben Licera, President of Cebu Bloggers Society; Fleire Castro, founder of GBG-Cebu, Ludwig Federigan, Marketing Manager of BMW Autowelt; Cheer Garciano, Managing Director, SageTree Global & I.T. Solutions; Bernard Arellano, Google Map Expert; JR Padilla, GBG Dagupan Community Manager; Yen de Felipe, GBG Iloilo Community Manager and Issa Perez Founder of Panay.directory.com.
