Chikwes comments on abducted girls absurd, insensitive -APC

The All Progressives Congress has said it is stupefied by the comments credited to PDP National Women Leader, Kema Chikwe, in which she expressed doubts about the abduction of over 200 schoolgirls from Chibok in Borno State, saying by the comments, Mrs Chikwe has simply crossed the line and plumbed the depths of absurdity and insensitivity.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Thursday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party expressed concern that such an insensitive statement could be made by a woman, a mother, a grandmother and a top official of the ruling PDP over an issue that is undoubtedly the worst tragedy and biggest embarrassment to Nigeria.

It said the comments raised even more concern because of the position in the ruling party of Mrs. Chikwe, wondering if her irresponsible statement represented the closet opinion of the ruling party or the unstated stand of the presidency in which case it will explain the FGs dawdling approach to the rescue of the girls.

It has been said that politics should not be brought into issues of national security. But how can anyone keep quiet in the face of this glaring assault on the sensitivity of a whole nation by a supposed leader of the ruling party? Who indeed is attempting to politicise a national tragedy, undoubtedly the worst in the history of our nation, if not the PDP?

Does this explain why the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces has not deemed it fit to make a national broadcast to assure a dumbstruck nation that he is indeed in charge, to give hope to the shell-shocked parents of the girls and to inspire the military, three weeks after this unprecedented national tragedy? Is this why the President and Commander-in-Chief has yet to visit Chibok?

If security concerns are responsible for the Presidents failure to visit Chibok, how is it possible for Gov. Kashim Shettima of Borno State to have visited the school, even in defiance of intelligence reports? If the military cannot make Chibok safe for its Commander-in-Chief to visit, who in that town is safe? We submit that no part of this country should be out of bounds to the President and Commander-in-Chief. No where in which our military men and women are deployed should be out of bounds to our President and Commander-in-Chief, it said.

It wondered whether the hapless parents who have, despite the risks to their own lives, taken to the Sambisa Forest in search of their children could have gone there on a picnic, if anyone would still be raising doubts that their children were indeed abducted.

A fringe group first mooted this idea of the abduction not being real and was ignored. But now that it has been raised to the level of a partys stand, it is time for all Nigerians to speak out and condemn this absurdity. Is Chikwe saying that the military that has been working round the clock to rescue the girls is only play acting? Is she also saying that the President who called an expanded National Security Council meeting on the issue is only horsing around? Enough of this absurdity.

We urged our patriotic soldiers and indeed all concerned to ensure that these innocent girls are returned home safely to their parents. We commend all the groups that have staged public protests to force the authorities to act faster on this issue for their efforts. We say all hands must be on deck to end this national nightmare as soon as possible, it said.

Federal Liberals adrift in Quebec: Hbert

MONTREALIs there much life for Justin Trudeaus federal Liberals in francophone Quebec in the absence of a unity debate? Not necessarily, according to the first Quebec-only poll released since the April 7 election.

The CROP poll suggests that the return to power of the provincial Liberals has left their federal cousins with little wind in their sails.

With all federalist indicators flashing green; with support for sovereignty standing at less than 30 per cent, the NDP is riding high among francophone voters (38 per cent) while Trudeaus Liberals (24 per cent) are being pushed back to the sidelines.

With numbers like that, Trudeau would hold his existing seats on the island of Montreal , where he enjoys the strong support of anglophone and allophone voters, but the party would remain shut out of the bulk of the province.

In the absence of gains in Quebec the Liberal leader could face long odds on winning enough seats to form a government in next years federal election.

There is little new to what plagues Trudeaus party in Quebec.

For almost four decades the party has done best when the PQ was solidly in the saddle provincially and poorly in more federalist circumstances.

Over the past few years, that trend has been compounded by the 2011 NDP sweep , the partys choice of Mulcair as leader and, more recently, by the PQs rout.

Philippe Couillards victory has killed the 2015 scenario of a federalist call to arms under the flag of the federal party that successfully fought the two Quebec referendums and that set out rules for a future vote on the provinces future in the Clarity Act.

Young Liberals' Fight Club

They were Young Liberals on a covert mission, codenamed Black Ops. The dress code was black, the meeting time was 10pm, and it was BYO ladder. Their mission: to tear down ''illegally'' posted campaign posters on telegraph poles, allegedly including their own.

Inspired by the buff Brad Pitt in cult movie Fight Club, a former adviser to minister Chris Hartcher fired off an email on August 11, 2011, to whip the party's youngest members into action.

Aaron Henry, the author of the missive, assured the Independent Commission Against Corruption that they were not waging a covert war on their political opponents and were even removing their own posters.

''Come on Mr Henry! Are you telling us that ''Black Ops'' was Young Liberals sneaking out at night, removing your own signs?'' said Geoffrey Watson, SC, counsel assisting the commission.

''It's a light hearted thing in order to help keep Young Liberals engaged and meeting us to go out and do work at 10pm at night,'' said Mr Henry.

An incredulous Mr Watson said that it was more likely the group was ''slashing'' the posters of their political rivals, but Mr Henry insisted this was a very small part of the crack team's work.
