Remember the GOP war on women?
Well, its back. But judging from whats going on in New Yorks 21st congressional district, it looks more like a war on Republican women.
Elise Stefanik is a small businesswoman who works for the familys upstate plywood company.
Before this, she put in a stint in the George W. Bush White House. Shes now running in an open seat as a Paul Ryan Republican, and a recent poll put her ahead of Democratic opponent Aaron Woolf, 46 percent to 33 percent.
Suddenly, her love life became an issue. It came in the form of a letter to the editor of the Watertown Daily Times written by Michael Flynn.
Flynn, who described himself as an independent political analyst, voter and supporter of Aaron Woolf, asked: Does Elise Stefanik have a private relationship with anyone?
Translation: Any dirt on this woman?
OK, a crank writes a letter to the editor. But the plot thickens.
Though Woolf quickly denounced the letter as reprehensible and antithetic to what this campaign does or should represent, Flynn responded by making public correspondence showing hed been informally working with the Woolf team.
Though theres no evidence Woolf campaign officials suggested Stefaniks love life should become an issue, plainly they encouraged the man who did. Now, imagine the outcry if only the party labels had been reversed.
