Social networking site, Facebook, can make you mentally ill, warns study

Researchers link psychotic episodes to internet addiction

They have linked psychotic episodes in patients to internet addiction and delusions related to virtual relationships.

While all the participants in a study had social problems such as loneliness, none had previous episodes of psychosis or drug abuse.

Lead researcher Dr Uri Nitzan said: As internet access becomes increasingly widespread, so do related psychopathologies.

Some patients are harmed by these social networking sites, which can attract those who are lonely or vulnerable in their day-to-day lives or act as a platform for cyber-bullying and other predatory behaviour.

Focusing on Dr Nitzans patients, researchers found they had all sought refuge from a lonely situation and found solace in intense virtual relationships.

People should exercise caution online as disappointment can be amplified in the virtual world

Two patients began to feel vulnerable as a result of sharing private information and one even experienced tactile hallucinations, believing the person beyond the screen was physically touching her

Dr Nitzan, of Tel Aviv Universitys Sackler Faculty of Medicine and the Shalvata Mental Health Care

Although these relationships were positive at first, they eventually led to feelings of hurt, betrayal and invasion of privacy.

Indian social networking site aims to beat Facebook, Twitter

New Delhi, May 3: Worldfloat.com,India's homegrown social networking site, hopes to increase its users to nearly 10 million by the end of June, giving competition to global giants like Facebook and Twitter.

"Currently, we have around six million users. It should reach 10 million by June-end," said Pushkar Mahatta, founder of Worldfloat.com.

Mahatta said that Worldfloat.com, which was launched last June, was gaining popularity across the world due to its added features.

Mahatta, also a director of Mahatta Towers, quoted on IANS, "On Worldfloat, you can do everything you do on Facebook. But we have added several unique features. The most important is virtual games,".

"I don't want to disclose the name of the funds, but what I can tell you is, I have received buyout offers of up to $300 million," Mahatta added.

He however said he had no immediate plans to sell the site.

About special features of this site, Mahatta said that there is an option of "treasure hunt game" that allows users to win money while networking.

"Worldfloat is not just a social networking platform. It is also a way for people to earn money up to Rs.10,000 through online competitions and contests by buying an online ticket of Rs.100," he said. The competition will be launched in a couple of weeks.

"There is no other technology platform or website today that offers such a unique service and function capable of giving users money through gaming and competition," Mahatta claimed.
