Clever Apps Hint At How Images Will Change Social Networking

Google's Glass headset may be an even more potent social tool than you may believe, if a new system called InSight is anything to go by: It's clever enough to recognize people in the wearer's field of view by their dress sense alone, and then presents their name on the Glass's display.

The developers suggest it may also be useful for spotting your friends in a crowd at a concert or other busy venues--under these circumstances face recognition is not an option because the faces may be far away and not looking at the camera. Instead the team behind InSight worked out a way to "fingerprint" someone from their fashion--from clothes to accessories like jewelry. The app does require training by observing the subjects so it can associate an outfit with a definite ID, but there's definitely a hint here that Google Glass may have some significant social benefits that go far beyond merely being able to google for stuff.

Meanwhile an app called Now is leveraging real-time social imagery in a different way--to cut through the noise of social network alerts from services like Instagram. Instead of pinging you frequently to say a friend has popped a new Instagram photo up, Now spots if a friend is Instagramming from a trending location and only alerts you then. This has the upshot of letting you spot hot events that are going on nearby, and also cuts down on the amount of unwanted alerts you get on your smartphone. Or, we assume, on your future Google Glasses.

Bee stings ‘could prevent HIV’

BEE stings could prevent the spread of HIV, doctors have sensationally claimed.

A chemical in the insects' venom can destroy the killer virus while leaving surrounding cells unharmed, research found.

The discovery has been hailed as an important step towards developing a gel that could stem the spread of HIV, which causes AIDS.

HIV ... the bee toxin is loaded onto nanoparticles before attacking the virus

A potent toxin in bee stings called melittin kills HIV cells by punching holes through their protective outer layer.

Scientists loaded the toxin into tiny nanoparticles, which are attached with "bumpers" to make them bounce off normal cells.

But when smaller HIV cells come into contact with the larger nanoparticles, they slip between the bumpers and are attacked by the lethal bee toxin within.

Attack ... melittin (green) fuse with HIV

Dr Joshua L. Hood, who took part in the study at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, US, said the bee toxin could be used in vaginal gel to prevent to prevent HIV from spreading.

He said: Our hope is that in places where HIV is running rampant, people could use this gel as a preventive measure to stop the initial infection.

Osceola County EMS reports data breach

By Ken Jackson Staff Writer

Osceola County EMS, the countys ambulance agency, has issued a notice to residents about a data breach affecting records of a number of local patients.

Advanced Data Processing, Inc. contract provider Intermedix, which manages billing for the ambulance agency, learned on Oct. 1, 2012 that one of its employees improperly accessed and disclosed certain patient account information in connection with a scheme to file falsified federal tax returns.

Account information accessed included name, date of birth and Social Security number, but no medical information was accessed. The county reported that the company employee accessing these records was apprehended by authorities, was immediately terminated by Intermedix and no longer has access to its systems. The company also thoroughly investigated the matter.

In an attempt to minimize the risk of future data breaches, the company has made more employees aware of this incident, the county said, and the consequences to the individual involved, and has reminded its employees of the importance of maintaining the security and confidentiality of individual records.

Anyone who has reason to believe their information was compromised or misused should contact the Osceola County Sheriffs Offices non-emergency number at 407-348-2222 and file a police report. Sheriffs spokesperson Twis Lizasuain said this week that the office had yet to receive reports of any cases.

Those who think they had a tax return illegally filed using their information, should contact the IRS Service Center 800-908-4490. Each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies is required as part of the Fair Credit Reporting Act to provide consumer with a free copy of their credit report, at their request, once every 12 months.

To order, visit http://www.annualcreditreport.com or call 1-877-322-8228.

Customers also may call Advanced Data Processing representatives at 877-264-9622 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with any questions regarding this matter.
