ECB Presents New EUR 5 Banknote with Cyrillic Spelling of Euro

The new EUR 5 banknote will carry a Cyrillic inscription for the first time.

The EUR 5 banknote was presented Thursday at a press conference at the European Central Bank.

ECB President Mario Draghi unveiled the 'Europa series' EUR 5 banknote featuring his signature under the EU flag.

The new EUR 5 note carrying the word 'Euro' in Cyrillic is to be issued on May 2, 2013.

The new banknote also has better protection against counterfeiting, according to reports of Euractiv.

The press office of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) came up with a statement saying that the step gave rise to the application of the Cyrillic alphabet in the Eurozone and expanded the influence of the euro as a global currency.

"As a result, over 200 million people across the world using the Cyrillic alphabet, among which Bulgarians, as full-fledged EU citizens, will be able to read the word "euro" in their national language on the banknote," BNB notes.

Packer's man has last word

EXCLUSIVE

A SENIOR executive at James Packer's Crown Limited was allowed to rewrite a media release before it was issued by the Premier, Barry O'Farrell, announcing initial government backing of the company's plans for a $1 billion hotel and casino at Barangaroo.

The chief executive of Crown, Rowen Craigie, was emailed a draft media release by the head of Mr O'Farrell's department, Chris Eccles, on October 24, the night before Mr O'Farrell publicly announced Crown's proposal would move to the next stage of the government's assessment process.

Documents released under freedom of information reveal Mr Craigie suggested a number of changes, including to the section dealing with the likelihood of Crown being awarded a casino licence and a description of how the government would further assess the plan.

Most, but not all, of Mr Craigie's handwritten changes on the draft were incorporated into the media release issued by Mr O'Farrell the next day.

These included altering the statement that the cabinet decision ''did not guarantee'' Crown a casino licence, which was changed to the weaker assertion that it ''did not necessarily guarantee'' one would be issued.

As well, the draft stated that the announcement ''merely meant the decision would be examined in detail''.

Judge: Mum's the word in synagogue case

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A federal judge in Rhode Island has told lawyers for the oldest synagogue in the United States and the nation's first Jewish congregation not to speak with the media about lawsuits they've brought against each other.

U.S. District Judge William Smith in Providence is trying to mediate a settlement between the Touro Synagogue in Newport and Congregation Shearith Israel in New York City. The dispute began when leaders of the nearly 250-year-old Touro Synagogue agreed to sell a set of Torah finial bells from Colonial times for $7.4 million to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Congregation Shearith Israel, established in 1654, says it owns the bells, as well as the synagogue.

Smith met privately with the two sides on Jan. 3 and told them not to discuss the case with the media, representatives for both sides told The Associated Press this week.

David DiMarzio, clerk of court at the U.S. District Court in Providence, told the AP on Friday that Smith has not entered a gag order, so the lawyers do not face formal sanctions if they speak. He said Smith is following court procedures for such cases.

"The whole purpose of the settlement process is severely undermined unless the parties maintain a certain level of confidentiality," DiMarzio said.

Both sides have sued in federal court in Rhode Island, and Congregation Shearith Israel has also sued in federal court in New York
