Choosing an open-source CMS, part 3: Why we use WordPress

In this last installment of our three-part series on finding the best open-source content management system (CMS) for your needs, we asked two organizations -- online magazine Quartz.com and Carleton University -- to talk about why they chose WordPress over other open-source options and how well that decision has stood the test of time. (Our first installment examined Drupal and the second looked at Joomla.)

WordPress got its start as a blogging platform in May 2003 and gradually evolved, first into a blogging system that let users add Web pages outside of the blog and then into a full-featured, popular CMS. Of the three most popular open-source CMSs -- WordPress, Joomla and Drupal -- WordPress is both the most popular and the fastest growing by far, according to Web technology tracker W3Techs.

"Drupal has long provided a flexible platform, enabling it to meet a broad set of needs. However, WordPress 3.0 significantly bridged the flexibility gap," says Larry Cannell, an analyst with Gartner.

Unlike Drupal, WordPress has a reputation for being notoriously easy to use -- in part because you don't have to download the software from the WordPress.org site and build your own Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP setup if you don't want to. Many less technically savvy people use the WordPress.com hosting service, which makes getting started easy.

This also means that companies using the higher-end WordPress CMS will find that many employees are already familiar with WordPress' administrative interface.

While Joomla and Drupal have more of a committee-based approach to decision-making as far as the direction and development of the software is concerned, the WordPress community is more hierarchical, which can mean faster decisions. "We have the benevolent dictator for life model," says co-founder Matt Mullenweg. "Ultimately, the buck stops at me."

The Death of Posterous.com -You need to find another Social Media Aggregator
The Death of Posterous.com -You need to find another Social Media Aggregator So after months of trying to email them support tickets on why their interface wasn #39;t allowing new sign-ups and many of the functions inside Posterous.com weren #39;t working. I finally see that they announced that as of April 30, 2013 their shutting down. Like many people, I have to say I #39;m not too happy about it. I #39;ve used Posterous now for about two years and really like their interface ( I would #39;ve even started to pay for it ,if they have asked) But, like many other social media websites and companies that got absorbed and bought out by a larger company. In this case, Twitter, and instead of selling it to somebody and keep it going, which is what I would #39;ve done their closing it down. Why, oh why, oh why, who knows? So I created this video as I have been hunting around for another social media aggregator, and until I find one like Posterous, I #39;m going to be using jet pack inside of Word press. Jet pack is a free plug-in for WordPress that is installed inside your website hosting package and connects to WordPress.com and even though it doesn #39;t have as many social media sites to connect to, I haven #39;t yet found anything else that I can use like Posterous.com, so far as Posterous.com had a WYSIWYG editor inside if interface. If anybody out there knows of a website like Posterous.com ( not HootSuite because no WYSIWYG editor) , please let me know. So there you have it, once again if you want the full ...
