The potential 2016 candidate for president is trying to strike an inclusive tone.

When Rand Paul was asked by CNN whether he might rethink his belief in "traditional marriage," he threw up his hands and made a strange face. And that unusual reaction sparked headlines in The Hill, Washington Post and others curious about Paul's evolution on the issue.

The Republican senator from Kentucky had been talking with CNN's Peter Hamby during a speaking tour of college campuses, where he's often asked about issues on which the GOP differs with young voters. Paul seemed to acknowledge, once again, that his party is in a political quandary on how to handle increasing acceptance of marriage equality.

Here's how CNN reported the exchange:

But can Republicans win a national election if they aren't in tune with rapidly changing opinions on the matter? He took a soft tone.

"Society's changing," he said. "I mean, people change their minds all the time on this issue, and even within the Republican Party, there are people whose child turns out to be gay and they're like, oh well maybe I want to rethink this issue. So it's been rethought. The President's rethought the issue. So I mean, a lot of people have rethought the issue."

It sounded, for a moment, as if Paul was hinting that he, too, could change his thinking about marriage.

"The bottom line is, I'm old fashioned, I'm a traditionalist," he said. "I believe in old-fashioned traditional marriage. But, I don't really think the government needs to be too involved with this, and I think that the Republican Party can have people on both sides of the issue."

"You could rethink it at some point, too?" I asked him.

A former Republican candidate for governor announced his support for the Libertarian candidate on Friday, arguing that neither major party candidate represents conservative values.

David Pennington lost a long-shot bid to replace Gov. Nathan Deal as the Republican nominee in May. Pennington said he wouldn't tell anyone else how to vote but decided to back Libertarian candidate Andrew Hunt based on his approach to taxes and fiscal policy.

Hunt, the former CEO of an Atlanta nanotechnology firm, is challenging Deal and Democrat Jason Carter.

"People say you waste your vote when you vote for a third-party candidate," Pennington said. "I believe you waste your vote when you vote for someone who does not share your ideals or beliefs."

Libertarian candidates in Georgia could play a major role in the races for governor and the open U.S. Senate seat. A candidate must receive more than 50 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff. Libertarian candidates have earned around 3 or 4 percent of the vote in recent statewide elections.

On Friday, Hunt said making a runoff election himself would be the ultimate victory. He said earning even 5 percent will demonstrate voters' interest outside the two major parties and could force a historic runoff.

"No one needs to be fearful that if you vote for Andrew Hunt, you're going to put either Deal or Carter into office," he said.

Pennington courted conservative voters during the GOP primary, attacking Deal's fiscal policies and during his campaign announcement accused the incumbent of hiding "behind a party label to raise taxes." He earned about 17 percent of the May primary vote.

Carter's campaign suggested the endorsement is a sign Deal can't consolidate support within his party while Deal supporters shrugged Pennington off as a non-factor.

The All Progressives Congress in Osun State has accused the Peoples Democratic Party of planning to cause violence at the Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Osogbo.

The APC alleged that the PDP planned to cause violence in order to compel the panel to give judgement in its favour.

The APC Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy, Mr. Kunle Oyatomi, made the allegation in a statement made available to journalists on Thursday in Osogbo.

The party, however, urged security agencies to prevent the PDP from throwing the state into anarchy.

The statement read, The APC has alerted the state security agencies to prevent any attempt to cause a breach of the peace in the state.

The State Election Petition Tribunal is a prime target of the PDP to put it under extreme pressure to decide in its favour.

The election petition tribunal resumes sitting next week in Osogbo and we want security agencies to prevent the PDP from disrupting the peace in the state.

But the PDP had on Tuesday alleged that the APC was planning to cause violence and blame it on the opposition.

The APC called on security agencies to also investigate the allegation.

Former Vice President and presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has said that strict adherence to the procedure of due diligence before entering into contractual agreements is an imperative for the evolution of a progressive.

The APC presidential hopeful in a goodwill message on the occasion of the Eid-el-kabir said the significance of the festival is a celebration of trust between man and God, rooted in the fulfilment of promises.

The statement issued by his media office in Abuja on Friday quoted Atiku as saying that trust is the foundation of the relationship between man and God and the two principal religions in Nigeria Islam and Christianity.

I rejoice with fellow Muslims across the country to celebrate the Eid-el-kabir festival. The significance of the celebration today is not in the blood or the flesh of the rams that are slaughtered, the APC chieftain said, adding the message is for people to be honour bound to respect the terms of the promises made to other entities.

As a society, we must place a premium on trust. Our greatness as a country is attainable only when government honours the promises it makes to the people. A leader who has a track record of reneging on every promise he makes cannot drive the process of change we desperately yearn for.

As a people too, we must be vigilant and thorough about the decisions that we take in conjunction with others. It is our responsibility to ensure that we enter into agreements with people of proven character and credibility. The prevailing mindset of placing trust on people based on primordial sentiments such as ethnic or religious considerations without recourse to due diligence is not healthy for the growth of individuals or nations, Atiku said.
