"Jogging" – a fighting word?

Jen A. Miller, For The Inquirer Posted: Sunday, December 30, 2012, 3:01 AM

There aren't just four-letter curse words.

In running, at least, there's a three-letter one, too - Jog.

It's a dated term, a leftover from the first U.S. running boom that coincided with bell-bottoms and disco, when fewer than 2,000 people ran the New York City Marathon and when women were told not to run because it would ruin their femininity and reproductive health.

Women were banned from running certain distances because it was believed they couldn't physically handle it.

Using the term jogging now is either like calling your pants slacks (pants that, if they look good, are "sharp," and probably bought at Strawbridge & Clothier), or it's an insult.

Pre-running-boom, running was called "road work," and done primarily by athletes from other sports who wanted to stay in shape.

When running became something to do for the sake of itself, New Zealand running coach Arthur Lydiard called it jogging, and the word ended up here via Bill Bowerman, legendary University of Oregon track coach and Nike founder who wrote the book Jogging in 1966 after a visit with Lydiard.

As running evolved and the New York City Marathon numbers topped 10,000, then 20,000, then 40,000, the terminology changed.

Jogger still is used in newspapers as a synonym for runners ("Jogger chased by mountain lion," Denver Post, Dec. 22; "Escaped emu follows jogger through streets of Virginia Beach," The Daily Press, Dec. 14). But within the running community, jog became an unfortunate dividing line.

Incarnate Word tops St. Joe's for ninth Visitation Tournament title

FRONTENAC The Incarnate Word girls basketball team continued its near-decade long domination of the Visitation Christmas Tournament on Friday.

The Red Knights got a game-high 16 points from sophomore standout Napheesa Collier as they knocked off St. Josephs 49-34 in the championship game.

For Incarnate Word (10-0, No. 1 in the STLhighschoolsports.com small-schools rankings) it is its ninth title in the tournament -- second only to the host team, which has 10 -- its fifth straight and its eighth out of the past nine years.

It was really intense, said Collier, who helped the Red Knights beat the Angels a third straight year in the title game. I loved it. It was fun.

St. Josephs (7-1, No. 2 LS), which was aiming for its seventh tournament title, was led by Sydney Stipanovich, who had 10 points.

Down 9-8 at the end of the first quarter, the Red Knights outscored the Angels 14-3 in the second eight minutes of play to take a 22-12 lead at the half. They ballooned the lead to 39-23 at the end of three quarters, and they coasted from there.

I thought our defensive pressure was good, IWA coach Dan Rolfes said. Our press really turned things around in the second quarter (and) really gave us the momentum.

Red Knights junior McKenna Treece, who sat out all of last year with a knee injury, had a coming out party with 10 points, eight of which she tallied in the second quarter.

Shes just been battling injury after injury, said Rolfes of Treece, who also is rebounding from a broken bone in her foot she sustained early in the season. She posted big, demanded the ball, wanted the ball and finished.

Incarnate Word also got a solid effort from Nakiah Bell, who tallied 12 points and a number of steals.

San Diego Internet Marketing & Web Development Firm Helps Local Non-Profit Charitable Housing Center with Upgraded …

Rocketforce.NET, a San Diego Based internet marketing & web development firm provides the non profit charitable organization, Restoration Ranch, with a free website and monthly marketing services. Rocketforce.NETs intention is to help promote and expand the organizations presence online to help bring more funding and ultimately strengthen Restoration Ranchs ability to help those in need.

San diego, Ca (PRWEB) December 28, 2012

The Ranch provides housing, food and faith based rehabilitation services for troubled members of San Diego Countys community who need a helping hand to straighten out their lives. Founder, Cheri Coit stresses a fundamental difference about the organization that is responsible for the effectiveness of the program in comparison to more traditional approaches to rehabilitation centers. Unlike most rehabs I have encountered, we teach our participants how to live beyond the initial 6 months or year of getting clean. We use the power of Christ to give our members the tools they need to truly enrich their lives and get on prosperous paths. The organization was founded several years ago and has helped countless individuals turn their lives around. To date, Restoration Ranch holds semi annual fundraisers that include guest speakers who were part of the program in order to share the organizations success and critical role. I attended the fundraiser in November. I have never seen such an astounding impact made on peoples lives from such a small group of people coming from middle class backgrounds. Restoration Ranch really is a story that needs to be told, Blake Warner Continues.

Cornerstone Ranch is located in the outskirts of San Diego County in Descanso. The programs offered by Cornerstone utilize the natural surroundings to set the stage for engaging with Jesus Christ. We have a beautiful location that helps us revitalize our program members, Cheri Coit continues. The organization has three different programs that include nature walks and camping trips as part of the spiritual healing. The main focus of the program, however, is to convert troubled individuals into self reliant Christians.

Rockforce.NET plans on continued support with Internet marketing services month to month throughout the year of 2013. We will continue to offer our services for free and assess the organizations online presence towards the end of 2013. Our intention is definitely to provide whatever we can to make a difference for Cornerstone Ranch, and the people they help. Blake Warner Concludes.
