BOSTON Fighting to move beyond his father's shadow, Sen. Rand Paul is crafting new alliances with the Republican Party establishment during a Northeast tour that began Friday in Boston.
The 51-year-old Kentucky Republican, son of libertarian hero and former Texas Rep. Ron Paul, headlined an afternoon luncheon hosted by top lieutenants of former presidential nominee Mitt Romney a private meeting that comes as Paul weighs a 2016 presidential bid of his own. To succeed in a national campaign, however, those close to Paul acknowledge that he must broaden his appeal beyond the tea party and libertarian-minded activists who rallied behind his father's long-shot presidential runs.
"Ron's retired. Ron's political career was obviously a help to Rand, but he's finished," said Doug Stafford, Rand Paul's former chief of staff who now leads his political action committee. "This is about Rand."
The freshman senator attended the luncheon at the private-equity firm Solamere Capital, a Boston-area company led by Romney, his former national finance chairman Spencer Zwick and Romney's oldest son, Tagg. Later in the afternoon, Paul speaks to Harvard University's Institute of Politics, where one of Romney's most trusted aides serves as a fellow. He finishes his Boston swing by addressing a national conference of ophthalmologists, where he plans to draw from his personal experience as an eye doctor in an effort to broaden his image.
Paul has yet to announce his intentions for the 2016 presidential contest but says he's seriously considering a run.
Former Romney aides and officials at the Republican National Committee said Paul is building on consistent outreach to GOP establishment figures that already distinguishes his record from his father's.
Paul endorsed Romney in 2012 soon after the former Massachusetts governor became the presumptive GOP presidential nominee; Paul's father never endorsed Romney. Over the last year, Paul has stood alongside Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus in places like New Hampshire and Michigan as the national party works to mend internal divisions and strengthen its appeal among young people and minorities. Paul has helped fellow Republicans across the political spectrum raise money, as he is expected to do Saturday for Maine Sen. Susan Collins, who is widely considered a moderate.
"There's no question that he has outreach to do, but I think people realize he has a legitimate chance of doing very well in the (presidential) nomination process," said former Romney aide Ryan Williams. "His challenge is to prove that if he were our nominee he would be a viable candidate in a national race. Certainly, his father was never viewed that way."
As he courts the establishment, Paul is starting to build a team on the ground in virtually every state a network drawn largely from the activists that backed his father. While Ron Paul was widely dismissed by the Republican establishment as a fringe candidate in 2012, he was a significant factor in several nominating contests, earning more than 20 percent of the vote in Iowa and New Hampshire.
The Paul camp recognizes that Romney's team could help him build on his father's numbers.

(CNN) - They may seem like a bit of an odd couple - but Sen. Rand Paul met on Friday with the man who steered fundraising for Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential campaign.
Paul, the first term Republican senator from Kentucky who's seriously considering a 2016 GOP bid for the White House, is known as someone who hails from the conservative/tea party wing of the party, and who also enjoys strong support from libertarians who backed his father's three campaigns for president. And Romney, considered the GOP establishment candidate in 2012, was never truly embraced by the grassroots.
But Friday, Paul followed in the footsteps of some other possible presidential contenders in meeting with Spencer Zwick, who served as Romney's finance director, and other former Romney donors, at the Boston offices of Solamere Capital, Zwick's private-equity firm.
Following the gathering, the senator said he was pleased with his meeting with Zwick and the other donors, according to Doug Stafford, a senior Paul political adviser.
Romney's eldest son Tagg, who's a managing partner at the firm, was also expected to take part in the meeting.
The get-together comes a couple of hours before Paul crosses over the Charles River to neighboring Cambridge to addresses Harvard University's Institute of Politics.
A Republican strategist close to the Romney world said that while Paul may seem like an odd choice for Romney donors, the early battle for the 2016 GOP nomination is a wide open affair.
"Governor Romney's impressive donor network, developed over several years, is national in scope and in the market for a horse to ride in 2016. At first glance, Rand Paul may not be an obvious choice for them to rally behind, but its hard to imagine a more wide open field as we head into primary season, said the strategist, who asked to remain anonymous to speak more freely.
Like Mitt, these donors are accomplished business and community leaders. They are clearly taking their due diligence very seriously, as they consider all angles in a developing field of candidates that has no clear frontrunner," the strategist said.
Paul's history with Romney may also be a factor behind Friday's meeting.

Several Republican candidates for state and federal offices appear to be mimicking -- and in some cases, word-for-word plagiarizing -- sections of Sen. Rand Paul's campaign and official websites.
The similarities to passages on the Kentucky Republican senator's sites were first flagged last week by Buzzfeed. A review by FoxNews.com finds that while some candidates are not always doing wholesale copy and paste, the similarities in language are obvious. While one candidate's campaign defended the practice by suggesting he and Paul were "like-minded," others did not offer a clear explanation.
One of the candidates is North Carolina Senate hopeful Greg Brannon, who like Paul in 2010 is a physician vying for his first seat in public office. The similarities in their bios extend to similarities in their websites. Many of Brannon's Issues pages are curiously similar to the pages from Pauls website from his first Senate campaign.
Take, for example, this phrase from the candidates pages on the Second Amendment, which both feature them holding a gun:
Paul: Politicians often give lip service to the 2nd Amendment but then go off to Washington and vote to restrict gun ownership.
Brannon: Too many politicians give public lip service to the Second Amendment but then turn around and vote to restrict gun ownership.
Or their pages on immigration:
Paul: Millions crossing our border without our knowledge constitutes a clear threat to our nations security.
Brannon: Millions crossing our borders without documentation constitutes a clear threat to our nations security.
