Paula Deen’s N-word scandal: List of companies that have parted ways

Paula Deen has released three apology videos, explained herself on the "Today" show and her sons defended her, but companies keep parting ways with the celebrity chef following her racial slur controversy.

Check out a list of companies that have ended their partnerships with Paula Deen below.

1. Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

On Wednesday, June 26, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. announced it had ended its relationship with Deen, according to the associated press. The retail giant carries a variety of products that feature Deen's name in its 4,000 stores, including cookware.

"We will not place new orders beyond those already committed," a Wal-Mart spokesman told the wire service. "We will work with suppliers to address existing inventories and agreements."

2. Caesars Entertainment

Caesars Entertainment, the company that owns and operates several casinos including Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, announced on Wednesday that it will be stripping her name from four buffet restaurants. However, the company said the restaurant rebranding was a mutual decision with Deen.

3. Smithfield Foods

On June 24, Smithfield Foods announced they dropped Deen as the company's spokesperson. The company also sold Paula Deen-branded hams, in addition to her duties as a spokesperson.

In a statement the company said, "Smithfield condemns the use of offensive and discriminatory language and behavior of any kind. Therefore, we are terminating our partnership with Paula Deen. Smithfield is determined to be an ethical food industry leader and it is important that our values and those of our spokespeople are properly aligned."

N-word controversy: Is Paula Deen done for?

NEW YORK

Will Paula Deen go the way of Michael Richards or Charlie Sheen?

One unleashed a bigoted tirade and is no longer a lovable, easily employable clown. The other carved a brand out of crazy - reported hotel N-word rant and all - but is back on TV earning millions.

Her Food Network shows gone, her endorsements crumbling, is Paula Deen - in a word - toast?

A week after Deen's admission of using racial slurs in the past surfaced in a discrimination lawsuit, pop culture watchers, experts in managing public relations nightmares and civil rights stalwarts who have tried to help other celebrities in her position see a long, bumpy road ahead.

They also see a week full of missteps and believe the queen of comfort food reacted too slowly to her latest controversy at a time when hours count. They say it could take years, if she can make it back at all to the earning power she has enjoyed.

"Paula Deen has, I would say, taken an irreparable hit because she had this appearance of being more or less a nice older woman who cooks food that's bad for you. That in her own way sort of made her lovable," said Janice Min, editorial director of The Hollywood Reporter in Los Angeles.

"But this presents a whole other picture of, `Wow, maybe she's just an old racist white southern woman.' That image is hard to shake off for a large chunk of people," Min added.

So far, what could go wrong pretty much has, said Larry Kopp, president of The TASC Group, a communications firm for sports figures and celebrities with experience in high-profile, racially charged cases. His current clients include the family of black teen Trayvon Martin, whose shooter, George Zimmerman, is on trial for second-degree murder.

In celebrity terms, where do Deen's troubles land her in the crowded hierarchy of misbehavior?

DGAP-News: Hess AG: Press statement of the insolvency administrator

Hess AG: Press statement of the insolvency administrator

Dr Grub confirmed as insolvency administrator

Villingen-Schwenningen, 26th June, 2013 In the course of the insolvency proceedings of the company Hess AG Form + Licht, the meeting of creditors was held on 26th June, 2013, at Local Court of Villingen-Schwenningen. Stuttgart lawyer Dr Volker Grub was confirmed by a large majority in office as insolvency administrator by the well-attended and turbulent meeting with just under 50 creditors. The applications of Christoph Hess and six companies related to him to deselect Mr Dr Grub were rejected.

The creditors' committee, which was already installed by the court on 20th February, 2013, with Thomas Harbrecht (Euler Hermes Kreditversicherungs AG), Reiner Neumeister (Chief Authorised Representative and Managing Director of IG Metall Villingen-Schwenningen) and Frank Schulze (Ostschsische Sparkasse Dresden) was also elected.

Dr Grub identified liabilities relevant to the insolvency proceedings amounting to EUR 104,9 million. These include claims for damages from the shareholders on the occasion of going public on 25th October, 2012, with EUR 35,65 million and from the minority shareholder HPE Pro Institutional Fund B.V. Amsterdam with EUR 14,0 million. As determined by Dr Grub, the assets only amount to EUR 32,75 million resulting in an over-indebtedness of approx. EUR 72,1 million. Hence, one can only expect a quota of at most 16%. Provided, however, that the further processing continues favourably.

Dr Grub reported to the creditors' meeting that the balance sheets from the year 2007 onwards must be corrected due to false accounting. On the basis of the net income (earning after taxes) there is a need for correction so far in the amount of at least EUR 26,4 million for the years 2007 to 2012. These numbers were also confirmed by the auditing company Ebner Stolz Mnning Bachem. The net income for the financial year 2011 alone needs to be adjusted downwards by EUR 10,3 million.

The correction of balance sheets does not exclusively serve to correct the tax balance sheets and to reclaim paid taxes, but also serves as basis of liability with regard to the previous Management Board Christoph Hess and Peter Ziegler, supervisory board members and consultants when going public.

The continuation of book values of the former Management Board lead to a totally different result at the accounting date 30th April, 2013. Assets reached EUR 74,3 million while liabilities amount to EUR 33,6 million. The accounting so far even results in EUR 40,7 million equity capital. The significant differences arise from the claims for damages on the part of the shareholders with EUR 49,6 million, not considered liabilities of Hess AG for subsidiaries, associated companies and companies of the 'shadow world' with EUR 20,3 million as well as allowances for intangible assets and investments.

Meanwhile, Dr Grub is satisfied with the continuation of the company. The target figures are being reached. The income from the continuation of business operations covers the resulting expenses in full.

How to Choose Trustworthy WordPress Themes & Plugins

How can you identify trustworthy themes and plugins? There are a few telltale signs. Here are some ways you can identify trustworthy themes and plugins so you can be rest assured the code is of good quality and, more importantly, safe.

WordPress plugin directory contains a rich and abundant collection of free themes and plugins. The great thing about the directory is that it is maintained and policed by a great team of contributors, including people like Ipstenu who is contributes directly to the WordPress core.

This maintenance is invaluable as they are very quick to act on reports for untrustworthy content. Abusive themes and plugins are promptly removed, and the majority are reviewed before the first iteration is published.

In the directory, look at download counts. Yes, there may be a new plugin which will obviously have a low download count but, generally, a plugin with more than 100,000 downloads is something you can trust more.

Additionally, any registered user can review a theme or plugin and rate it out of 5. Reviews are a great indication of how the plugin performs on people's sites. Reviews may also be useful to double check on specific features, or possible conflicts with other themes and/or plugins running on your site.

Read reviews that are rated 1/5. Reviewers generally rate something 1 out of 5 if a plugin is genuinely of low quality or doesn't work, but sometimes a user can give something a low rating because it doesn't work for themonly, not knowing that some other conflict may be happening. In addition, WordPress mods do check on reviews to overlook their substance.

Each theme and plugin hosted at the directory has its own support area. Take a quick look inside to see if there are a lot of issues and, if so, how much they could affect your own installation.

Also look at the proportion of threads labeled [resolved]as this shows the author's own activity within the area and if evidence that support is offered and potential bug fixes are being seen to.
