Power of social media

Social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and a host of others are meant to connect people along certain shared interests, political ideas and philosophies. Some use these sites to post personal information including high points and eventful moments of their lives. Others use these sites to share their politics and also get enlightened by others who are more deeply acquainted with certain issues. Since the old adda spaces where intellectual sparring used to happen over cups of tea, are no longer available due to paucity of time and space, social networking sites provide that breathing space. Every thinking person, particularly the youth are bubbling with ideas that they want to bounce them against those of others so that the discourse is enriched. These sites are an excellent platform for virtual debates.

Unfortunately there are some with venomous intent who use social network sites to promote hatred and disharmony. In a country as fragile as India is in terms of communal and religious sensitivities anything that hurts the sentiments of any group or individual has the propensity to cause a flare-up. What is worse is that people with anti-national proclivities are using this space to brainwash impressionable young minds. The problem with social network sites is that anything posted on the site can go viral and reach the far ends of the earth. The repercussions of a post in Shillong might not necessarily be felt here but it could create a backlash elsewhere, where the victim/s could be innocent of the debate on virtual spaces.

Those who post such hate mails dont think too far or are unconcerned with the dangerous consequences of their actions. They are only preoccupied with the immediate. But we live today in a shrinking world where mobility has never been as smooth and seamless as it has ever been in the past. We are no longer exclusive communities living in a cocoon. The much quoted Biblical exhortation, Do unto others as you would have them do to you, is as applicable today as it was many centuries ago. If someone in Meghalaya spreads venom over Facebook or other sites, there are cranks out there who would take revenge on Meghalayans living elsewhere. This is a wired world. Intellectuals may argue that the Right to Freedom of Expression also constitute the right to use social networking sites. But can an unedited piece of hate speech that could cause a communal conflagration be considered freedom of speech? This issue requires serious introspection.

Social media as a business tool

People are becoming more aware of the usefulness of the social media as a business tool. Social media has gone beyond just being present or registered on the social networking sites. It involves reaching your target audience/market, meeting and keeping in touch with prospective clients or customers, and an avenue to form good business relationships.

While planning to use the social media as a tool to help in developing your business, there are quite a number of things to consider. Below are seven key points that could help create a solid social media campaign for your brand or business:

Know your voice and fine tune it

In a world where there are many voices the struggling and the heard you could easily get drowned in the multitude of voices and really lose the individuality of your brand. The business world is a rat race they say, an entrepreneur needs to admit that the first and most difficult competition he/she has is within.

Before venturing into using social media as a tool for your business growth or development, you have to consider your brand or business values and how to best use and integrate it into any online social community without loosing your image to the trends.

Your number one goal as a business in using the social media isnt just to grow a large fan base, but to reach the right targeted audience and also attract the right clients and partners possible.

I have taken note of some businesses or brands around some major social networking platforms, where in the quest for quickly gaining fans or followers online seem to loose focus of actually reaching out to them in light of what they have to offer. Yes, a fan engagement strategy should be put in place but it could be wrong to assume that the higher number of fans one has on social media the better for the business.

While, as a business owner, you engage fans with all sorts of contents and activities that do not sell your brand to them, it is advisable that you strike a balance and dont get carried away. Know your voice and how to communicate it authentically across all social platforms.

Define your audience/customers

Social media college research up among students, says report

More students are turning to social networks to inform their college search, according to a study by education consulting firm Art & Science Group.

Forty-four percent of the firm's sample of college-bound students indicated they used social networking sites to gather information or impressions about colleges, up from 18 percent in 2008.

Of the group of students who used social media for college research, an overwhelming majority (36 percent) said they preferred Facebook; Google+ (13 percent) and YouTube (7 percent) followed.

Half of the students who used social media in their college search said it did influence their decision. Study respondents said they "read the comments by students at specific schools," "looked at notes or blogs to see what people are staying about the college," or "look at pictures of students at specific schools." The study found that students got a better sense of the social life or how they would fit in at schools than the schools' academic quality or prestige on social media.

Overall, students ranked social media as the least helpful college resource, favoring college websites and visits.

The firm concluded that "social media sites are increasingly influencing students college considerations," but "their role in the college decision-making process may, in fact, be greatly over estimated by some admissions offices."

The Art & Science Group's student was sent to 39,000 random SAT test takers in late 2012, with 1,138 students qualifying for participation. All respondents were four-year college-bound students.

Dr. Vesco-Mock: Parvovirus is killing puppies in Doña Ana County

Parvo is hitting the puppies of Doa Ana County hard as summer wanes. The Animal Service Center of the Mesilla Valley started seeing cases the second week in August and they have not let up. Almost daily, the second little blue dot is turning up on the snap test (only one blue dot is desired - that would be a negative test.)

It breaks my heart that more than 30 puppies had to die from this virus in August in Doa Ana County.

The ASCMV teamed up with the Doa Ana County Humane Society to produce a PSA and billboards to show just how deadly and yet how preventable parvo is. Look for them around the county.

Parvovirus is a viral disease of dogs. It affects puppies much more frequently than it affects adult dogs because they have immature immune systems. The virus grows in rapidly dividing cells. The intestinal lining has the biggest concentration of rapidly dividing cells in a puppy's body so that is where the virus likes to live.

What are the symptoms of parvo?

The big three are vomiting, foul-smelling diarrhea and lethargy. Symptoms usually begin with a high fever, lethargy, depression and loss of appetite. Secondary symptoms appear as severe gastrointestinal distress, such as vomiting and bloody diarrhea. In many cases, dehydration (due to not being able to absorb nutrients or liquids), shock, and

How is this killer virus transmitted?

Canine parvovirus is carried by dogs. Any adult dog can be a carrier, whether it is showing clinical signs or not. In other words, you should consider every dog as a potential carrier.

Generally, it takes seven to 10 days from the time of exposure for dogs and puppies to start showing symptoms and to test positive for the virus. Parvo is highly contagious to unprotected dogs, and the virus can remain infectious in ground contaminated with fecal material for years in the correct conditions.

Parvo is an extremely hardy virus and most disinfectants cannot kill it. Chlorine bleach is the most effective and inexpensive agent that works.
