It's endorsement season

Two Republican candidates, Wayne Williams for Colorado secretary of state and George Leing for Congress, received endorsements this week that have delighted their fans and surprised some voters.

The Colorado Spring Independent.

Williams got the nod from the liberal Colorado Springs Independent, a weekly newspaper that typically endorses Democrats, not Republicans.

Its safe to say it doesnt happen often, said Robert Meyerowitz, news editor of the Indy.

The Fort Collins Coloradoan, which has a history of mixing it up with endorsements, backed Leing over the Democratic incumbent, U.S. Rep. Jared Polis of Boulder.

The Independent backed Williams, the El Paso County clerk and recorder, over the Democratic nominee, University of Colorado Regent Joe Neguse.

Its a happy thing for the electorate in this race that you probably couldnt go wrong no matter which man you choose, the paper wrote.

Weve been on the receiving end of Williams offices efficiency and its professionalism, both of which have been impressive. Unlike Neguse, Williams has experience running elections, including two very challenging ones: the 2012 primary that happened during the Waldo Canyon Fire (and forced his workers to evacuate for their safety), and the John Morse recall election last year.

Neguse, however, was endorsed this week by newspapers in Durango, Grand Junction and Aurora.

The Coloradoan said Polis hasnt really taken the time to listen to Larimer County and Fort Collins. Polis inherited the county, which used to be in the 4th Congressional District, following redistricting after the 2010 census.

McConnell Touts Experience Amid Anti-Incumbent Mood

Mitch McConnell once said his goal was to make Barack Obama a one-term president. Nowadays, he boasts about how often he negotiates with Obamas vice president as evidence of his influence in Washington.

I was with Joe Biden again, McConnell, the Senate Republican leader from Kentucky, said at a recent candidate forum, recounting his role helping resolve a fiscal crisis in 2012. The only deals that have been made on a bipartisan basis, I brokered, he said. Every one of them.

The man poised to run the Senate if Republicans win control in November is making an argument that runs counter to his partys anti-government mood: Im the ultimate insider.

He may have no choice. McConnells Democratic opponent says hes the cause of the gridlock in the capital. So he has to convince voters that his three decades of Senate experience make him the solution, not the problem.

As a Senate Republican leader, its very difficult to run away from Washington, said Republican strategist Ron Bonjean, a onetime aide to former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott of Mississippi. He can make arguments as to what hes done to stop bad things from happening.

Its not an easy sell. McConnell, 72, trailed Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes, 35, by two points in a Bluegrass poll released this week, though he has led in most other surveys.
