Attorney General Eric Holder announced Wednesday that Vanita Gupta would become the Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division.

Ms. Gupta joins the department from the American Civil Liberties Union, where she worked as the director for the groups Center for Justice.

Vanita has spent her entire career working to ensure that our nation lives up to its promise of equal justice for all, Mr. Holder said. Even as she has done trailblazing work as a civil rights lawyer, Vanita is also known as a unifier and consensus builder. She has a knack for bridging differences and building coalitions to drive progress.

Ms. Gupta joins the Civil Rights Division as it is involved in ongoing investigations into accusations of racial bias and police brutality motivated by shootings in Ferguson, Mo.

Democrat Irv Halter

Irv Halter, the Democratic candidate for Colorados 5th Congressional District, will likely debate a chicken on Thursday.

The outlandish notion is the latest attempt to get Republican Congressman Doug Lamborn to debate the retired Air Force general. A political-action committee called Colorado Springs Citizens For A Congressman Who Wont Chicken Out is scheduled to host a debate at the Colorado Springs Penrose Library Thursday. Members of the committee have been going around the city dressed in chicken suits handing out leaflets imploring Lamborn to debate Halter. The committee even showed up at the Colorado Springs city council meeting Tuesday.

According to a press release, if Lamborn doesnt show up to the debate, a trained chicken will take his place.

Lamborn has declined Halters challenge to a debate since besting Bentley Rayburn in the GOP primary in June. Lamborns campaign spokesman Jarred Rego told The Gazette the congressman has no desire to provide Halter with a platform to spread his deceptive rhetoric and uncivil tone.

Lamborns refusal to debate has come under heavy fire from Halter, El Paso County Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Ricker, and now the political action committee is the latest to urge Lamborn to debate.

As the race for the Colorado Springs seat nears the homestretch, Halter has continued to outpace the incumbent congressman according to Federal Election Commission records.

Lamborn raised $91,806.09 in the third quarter of 2014. The amount brings Lamborns total cash on hand to $171,428.77 with $100,000 of that number coming from a loan from Lamborns personal funds. The congressman loaned the money March 31.

Halter by contrast raised $191,617.55 raised with $363,425.38 cash on hand. Halter has outpaced Lamborn in fundraising throughout the entire year. Though the massive discrepancy between the funds in each camp can be attributed to Lamborn spending $150,000 in the primary. Halter ran unopposed.

The two words Republican Sen. Pat Roberts wanted Kansans to remember from his Wednesday night debate against Greg Orman were "liberal Democrat."

"Kansans know they have a choice to make. They can make a choice between a trusted conservative Republican with integrity or my opponent, who is a liberal Democrat who still wont shoot straight," Roberts, who's running for his fourth term, said at the outset of the debate.

Faced with an unexpectedly robust challenge from Orman, a businessman running as an independent, Roberts is doing everything he can to convince voters that Orman isn't really an independent by tying him to President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada. Only a vote in his favor would result in a Republican majority, he argued.

"[Orman] ran against me as a Democrat in 2008 and he gave contributions, $174,000 to Hillary Clinton, to Barack Obama, and yes, even Harry Reid," Roberts said. "By deed and by word and by campaign contribution he cannot stand up to the Reid-Obama agenda."

Greg Orman, an independent Senate candidate from Kansas, tells CBS News' Nancy Cordes how he'll decide which party to caucus with if he wins.

That's the argument Roberts has made for weeks, although Orman hasn't made it easy to prove: he refuses to say which party he would caucus with if elected to the Senate, and says that both parties are responsible for the gridlock in Washington. But he did accuse Roberts of "making up facts" about his political donations.

"Tonight, Senator Roberts is going to tell you that President Obama and Harry Reid are the reason Washington's such a mess and you know what? He's half right," Orman said before Roberts even launched the first attack.
