Al Sharpton Is As Much a Reverend As I Am a Black Man

December 9, 2014|8:53 am

In America many people claim to be something they are not and get away with it, which explains why Al Sharpton continues to use the title Reverend. However, he is as much a reverend as I am a black man.

By age ten Sharpton was "ordained" by Pentecostal minister Bishop F.D. Washingtona man with no training or education. Regardless of education, no one in his or her right mind can ascribe the title of minister to a 10 year old.

Most professions require relevant credentials and skills. For teachers this includes a masters degree, certifications, and background checks. For police, graduation from police academy and ongoing job training and evaluations are required. Attorneys and judges must also not only have a law degree and passed the bar, but follow a code of ethics and maintain accreditation standards to keep their license.

Al Sharpton never finished college. He has less education than a kindergarten teacher. He possesses a high school level knowledge of English. And his version of history speaks for itself. He famously quipped: "White folks was in caves while we was building empires.... We taught philosophy and astrology and mathematics before Socrates and them Greek homos ever got around to it."

Most Christian ministers earn a MA degree and learned the now non-spoken languages of Greek and Hebrew originally used to write the Bible. Additionally, PhD's require fluency in French, Latin, and German to understand translations from original texts to the vernacular.

Granted, someone can earn numerous degrees and still be neither a Christian nor a minister. Which is why, what one says and does reveals their motivation and conviction about Biblical authority and the Gospel.

Sharpton claims to have preached his first sermon at four years oldwhether the topic was potty training or a popular song, it undoubtedly was not about Jesus Christ. To state the obvious, toddlers cannot read. They also do not have the capacity to gain knowledge or wisdom from years of prayer and studying the Scripture.

Sharpton has never professed a testimony of conversion, nor has he ever led a church. He has written no books about the Bible, and any language of grace, salvation, forgiveness, repentance, restoration, the Gospel of Jesus Christ or even Jesus are consistently absent from his remarks.

Sadly, Sharpton's life exemplifies everything that Christianity is not.

Relatives Of Unarmed Man Killed By Rookie Cop Want Rev. Al Sharpton To Back Off

Rev. Al Sharpton had announced that he was going to deliver a eulogy at the wake (and/or funeral) of Akai Gurley, the 28-year-old Brooklyn man who was fatally shot by a rookie police officer in the Pink Houses last month. But apparently several members of Gurley's family want him to butt out of their affairs: "Al Sharpton came in, put his name on the situation, but has not even made one single call to the parents to Akai," Gurley's aunt, Hertenceia Peterson, told TMZ. She added that all he sees "is money and political gain and that he is turning the tragedy into a circus."

Peterson said she was speaking on behalf of Gurley's mother, Sylvia Palmer. "He just wants to take credit for this when hes never even contacted my sister [Gurleys mother]," she told the Post. "Who made you the spokesperson of our family? We just want to bury our nephew with dignity and respect."

Sharpton said he was asked to speak by Kimberly Ballinger, Gurleys domestic partner and mother of his 2-year-old daughter. He told the News that he wouldn't go to either event and blamed the confusion on a "dispute in the family." "I dont want to get in the middle of it, he said yesterday. "I didnt know until today that the mother and the sister and the domestic partner werent together."

Ballinger defended Sharpton, who held a press conference after the shooting on behalf of Gurley, before attending the wake on Friday: "Rev. Al Sharpton has been here for us since day one," she said, according to the News ."We want justice. I want to see an indictment."

At a press conference earlier in the day, Gurley's mother addressed the public and press for the first time since the fatal shooting: "There is nothing in this world that can heal my pain and my heartache," Palmer said. "And I pray to God that I get justice for my son." Brooklyn DA Kenneth Thompson announced late on Friday that there will be a grand jury convened to look into the shooting.

This news comes a day after a damning report by the Daily News, which quoted anonymous sources alleging that rookie cop Peter Liang and his partner chose to text their union representative before calling for help for the victim. Those sources also said the officers weren't even sure of what the exact address was for the Pink Houses, where the shooting occurred; and they weren't even supposed to be doing a vertical patrol (and were instructed by their commanding officer to stick to the outsides of the building or the lobby).

Police should not be behind the camera, they should be on-camera

Police body cameras are all the rage lately. Al Sharpton wants them used to monitor the activities of cops. Ann Coulter wants them used to shut down Al Sharpton. The White House wants them because, well, theyre a way to look both tough on police violence and tough on crime by spending $263 million on new law enforcement technology.

When Al Sharpton, Ann Coulter and the president of the United States agree on anything, my immediate, visceral reaction is extreme skepticism. In this case, the known facts support that skepticism.

Its exceedingly unlikely that widespread use of police body cameras would reduce the rate or severity of unjustified police violence. Weve already seen the results of numerous technology solutions to that problem.

The introduction of mace and tasers to police weapons inventories encouraged a hair-trigger attitude toward encounters with suspects (suspect being law enforcement-speak for anyone who isnt a cop). Their supposed non-lethality made it safer to substitute violent action for peaceful talk.

The introduction of military weaponry and vehicles to policing hasnt produced de-escalation either. Quite the opposite, in fact now we get to watch small-town police departments stage frequent re-enactments of the Nazi occupation of Paris in towns across America.

And police car dash cams? Thats obviously the most direct comparison. But the dash cam always seems to malfunction, or the police department mysteriously loses its output, when a credible claim of abusive police behavior arises.

On the other hand, its absolutely certain that widespread use of police body cameras would increase the scope and efficacy of an increasingly authoritarian surveillance state.

The White House proposal calls for an initial rollout of 50,000 cameras. Does anyone doubt that the output of those cameras would be kept, copied, cross-referenced and analyzed against law enforcement databases (including but not limited to facial recognition databases) on a continuing basis?

Assuming a camera attaches to a particular officer with an eight hour shift (rather than being passed around at shift changes for 24-hour use), thats 400,000 hours per day of random warrantless searches to be continuously mined for probable cause to investigate and arrest people. Even George Orwell didnt go so far as to have 1984s Thought Police carry portable cameras everywhere they went!

Video technology is certainly part of the solution to police violence, but that solution should remain in the hands of regular people, not the state. More and more of us every day come into possession of the ability to record video on the spot, while instantly porting it to Internet storage so that it cant be destroyed at the scene or tampered with after the fact. Cops need to be on cameras they dont control.
