About Rand Rand Paul | United States Senator

Dr. Rand Paul is the junior United States Senator for Kentucky. Elected in 2010, he has proven to be an outspoken champion for constitutional liberties and fiscal responsibility, and a warrior against government overreach. Among his first legislative proposals: cutting $500 billion in federal spending and a plan to balance the federal budget in just five years. He has since introduced similar bills with growing support. In the Senate, Rand serves on the Foreign Relations, Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, Homeland Security and Government Affairs, and Small Business Committees.

A graduate of Duke University School of Medicine, Rand was a practicing ophthalmologist in Bowling Green, Ky., for 17 years.

In 1995, he founded the Southern Kentucky Lions Eye Clinic, an organization that provides eye exams and surgery to needy families and individuals. Today, even as a U.S. Senator, he continues to provide pro-bono eye surgery to Kentuckians in need of care.

Rand has been a vocal advocate for term limits, a balanced-budget amendment, a Read the Bills Act, and an audit of the Federal Reserve. He has gained prominence for his independent positions on many political issues.

Rand has been married for 23 years to Kelley Ashby of Russellville, Ky., and they have three sons.

Anthony Weiner praises Rand Paul's 2016 strategy

By Ashley Killough, CNN

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

(CNN) -- Anthony Weiner thinks Rand Paul is playing it smart.

The former Democratic congressman from New York, who resigned in 2011 amid a sexting scandal, offered up some 2016 insight Friday, saying the Kentucky Republican senator is wise to make privacy concerns a big part of his potential presidential platform.

"Paul's strategy could put him in a great place in a Republican primary," Weiner wrote in a column for Business Insider.

Paul has been the most vocal opponent in Congress against the National Security Agency's domestic surveillance programs involving phone metadata collection.

He filed a now-stalled lawsuit against the Obama administration earlier this year, and he voted against an NSA reform package last month because he felt it didn't go far enough in tweaking the agency.

(He took some heat, however, from some in the anti-NSA community for his vote because the measure ultimately failed to advance.)

Privacy issues have become a staple in Paul's stump speeches on the 2014 campaign trail, where he was known to hold up his cell phone in the air and declare that what Americans do on their phones is "none of the government's damn business."

December 13, 2014 by Femi Atoyebi, Fisayo Falodi and Eric Dumo 9 Comments

South-East zonal spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress, Osita Okechukwu

The All Progressives Congress in the South-East and some governors elected on the partys platform have hailed the emergence of a former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, as the partys presidential candidate.

The APC also hailed the losers of the partys presidential primary for accepting defeat in good faith.

The party, which described the losers as co-winners of the presidential primary, saluted the robust understanding and sportsmanship they demonstrated after the result of the exercise was announced.

A former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, defeated former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Kano State Governor, Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso; Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha and a newspaper publisher, Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah, to emerge as the winner of the primary held on Wednesday through Thursday in Lagos.

The party said the candour of the losers and their solidarity with the winner was uncommon and highly commendable.

A statement issued on Friday by the spokesman for the APC in South-East, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, said the result of the primary reflected a nationwide acceptance of Buhari as a man of the people.

Also, the Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, and his Osun State counterpart, Alhaji Rauf Aregbesola, congratulated Buhari on his victory at the primary.

They said in statements issued by their spokespersons that Buharis emergence was an attestation of the high regard the party had for democratic process.
