Alao-Akalall regret defection to LP, says Oke

Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala

Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Oyo State, Akin Oke, has expressed his disappointment at a former governor of the state, Adebayo Alao-Akala, for his decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party to the Labour Party, instead of the ruling APC.

Alao-Akala had joined the LP on the day the PDP held its governorship primary election in Ibadan the state capital, in protest against the outcome of the exercise.

Oke, while speaking on the development, wondered why Alao-Akala made the decision when his chances of success were brighter in the APC.

While recognising Alao-Akala as a political heavyweight in the state, Oke said although APC might not give the ex-governor its governorship ticket, he would have gotten a senatorial ticket and with bright chances of success at the polls.

Oke said, Incidentally, Alao-Akala is my brother; we come from the same town and zone. I know his weight, he has a formidable weight. But I think he miscalculated by going to LP and he is going to regret it.

If I were in his shoes, rather than go to the LP, I would have gone to the APC, since he is aggrieved with the PDP. I know he will eventually regret his decision.

Oke added that most governors with eight-year tenures ended up in the Senate. He said the APC would have given him the chance to achieve that easily.

Surely, we could have given him the senatorial ticket but with the place he has gone to, I am very sure he cannot win. It is going to cost him more and he will still not win. That is why I think he will regret the decision later.

I dont know who advised him to take that decision but I know that whoever talked him into it gave him a wrong impression, said Oke.

APGA compels PDP defectors to sign undertaking

Facts emerged on Friday that the All Progressives Grand Alliance has compelled members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party who defected to the party to sign an undertaking before they would be given the partys tickets.

Scores of the aggrieved members of the PDP had on Tuesday shunned the reconciliation committee headed by King Amalate Turner and picked the tickets of APGA to fly the flag of the party to contest the 2015 elections.

The PDP members such as a former President of the Ijaw Youth Congress, Mr. Jonjon Oyeinfa, and a former Commissioner in Bayelsa State, Zuwa Kodugah, picked the tickets to represent their various constituencies at the next general election in the state on the platform of APGA.

Kodugah, until recently, was a commissioner for State Capital Development under the administration of Governor Seriake Dickson.

However, it was learnt that APGA accepted the defecting PDP members on the condition that they would sign an undertaking, promising that they would not abandon the party when elected into the state and national assemblies in 2015.

The APGA state chairman, Mr. John Sokare, while intimating journalists on the development, said though acts of defection by politicians was not new to Nigerian politics, APGA had insisted that all flag bearers of the party must sign an undertaking to abide by the partys constitution.

Sokare said, We have laid out our conditions for the state and National Assembly aspirants. In spite of the fact that we are friendly and disposed to the election of President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015, we asked them to abide by our party rules on performance.

We also asked them to develop a new disposition to infrastructural development, women and youths empowerment, and they should be accessible to the people when elected into office.

They will be formally made to sign an undertaking on all of these and our disposition to issue of cross-carpeting after being elected on our platform as a party.

On the claim that the mass defection of PDP members into the fold of APGA was influenced by the wife of the President, Patience Jonathan, Sukare dismissed the claim as fictitious, insisting that those elected as flagbearers of the party were committed and needed a platform to actualise their dream of contributing to the development of the state.
