CORDOVA, AL -
A 15-year-old is recovering from surgery after he was reportedly attacked in his high school's restroom. His parents say he is the victim of what's been called the "knockout game."
We understand Cordova police are investigating the attack that happened last Thursday, but the chief has not confirmed that yet.
Matthew Cooper says he was hit with a surprise sucker punch by a friend. Now, the teenager has a break and a fracture in his jaw.
He can barely open his mouth but that didn't stop him from telling Alabama's 13 Newswhat happened to him, he says at the hands of a boy he once called a friend.
"I remember turning around and getting hit and that's about it," Matthew said.
Matthew'sjaw is being held together by metal plates and screws after surgeons at UAB repaired itMonday night following a sucker punch in his high school's bathroom.
"I remember waking up on the bathroom floor, choking on blood," Matthew said.
His parents say Matthew is the latest victim of what's been called the "knockout game." Similar attacks have been posted to YouTube in recent years. The attacks became so prevalent in New York that state lawmakers drafted legislation that would allow prosecutors to try teenagers as adults if they're accused of sucker punching the unsuspecting.
"It's not what you send your kids to school for. I sure didn't think it would happen to mine," said his mother, Rebecca Cooper.

Cordova teen's jaw broken at school in "knockout game"
CORDOVA, AL (WBRC) -
A teenager is home from the hospital after suffering a broken jaw and concussion. He said he was the victim of the "knockout game."
The victim, Matthew Cooper, said he believes he was a set up by his own friend. Cooper thinks his friend thought the punch in the face would be funny.
"All I remember is getting hit, said Cooper. After that I don't remember much after that."
Cooper said the attack happened on Thursday. He stepped out of a bathroom stall at Cordova High School when he said he was punched in the face. He said he was the victim of the "knockout game" where kids try to knock out an unsuspecting victim just for fun.
He's convinced his attacker was someone he knew.
"I'm not so much mad about it," said Cooper. It's just I'm upset because I thought this boy was my friend."
Cooper had surgery at UAB Hospital on Monday, where his jaw was wired shut and he also has a concussion. His parents said he has a four to six month recovery ahead of him.
"I'm hurt and I'm mad, said a tearful Rebecca Cooper. This is not what you send your kids to school for to be attacked or bullied."
Rebecca Cooper said she was told another student recorded the attack on a cell phone.
