[UPDATED] Buhari to name Osinbajo as running mate

The All Progressives Congress has named a former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos State, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, as the running mate of the APC presidential candidate, Major Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.).

Buhari announced the choice of the party at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, after a long wait for the unveiling of the person who will run alongside the former Head of State in the 2015 presidential election.

Osinbajo served as justice commissioner during the tenure of former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and also a top pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

He came into the APC secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday in a black suit, a white shirt and a red tie.

Presenting his running mate, Buhari said he had picked a man of unquestionable character, a professional and an intellectual, whom he believed would discharge the duties expected of him with utmost diligence.

I want to present to you a man of great character, a thorough professional, a man of high integrity, an intellectual and Nigerias next Vice president, he said.

Accepting the offer, Osinbajo, who said he was privileged to be offered the opportunity to serve as the running mate of the retired general, explained that he had consulted widely before taking on the task.

Osinbajo, a professor of Law and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, is also an in-law to the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, having married a grand daughter of the former Premier of the Western region.

The choice of who emerges as Buharis running mate had generated intense debate and interest since the emergence of the former Head of State as the APCs flag bearer last Friday.

Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi; his Lagos State counterpart, Babatunde Fashola; the immediate former governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi ; Senator Chris Ngige and former National Chairman of the defunct All Nigerian Peoples Party, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, had previously been tipped as likely candidate for the vice presidential slot.

Leadership deficit responsible for Nigerias woes -Buhari

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), has identified leadership deficit as the major factor responsible for the challenges currently facing the nation.

He said this in a message to Nigerian Youth Groups on the occasion of his 72nd birthday anniversary in Abuja on Wednesday.

The presidential aspirant expressed optimism that with prudent management, Nigeria had the resources to meet the needs of all citizens.

According to him, a Nigeria where lives and property are safe; schools are world class, health services are available and affordable and where every Nigerian feels proud and wanted is still possible.

He promised that an APC-led administration shall focus on the creation of jobs for the youths.

To achieve this, he said an administration, which he intends to lead, shall implement strategies to immediately engage as many unemployed Nigerians as possible in quick-win schemes, while long-term programmes would be planned to make unemployment a thing of the past in Nigeria.

According to him, he has never wavered from his desire to contribute to a better Nigeria, even in the face of the most daunting challenges.

Fayemi submits APC convention report

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress convention planning committee, ex-governor Kayode Fayemi, has said the committee rose above the hostility of the federal government, to give the party a transparent presidential primary election.

This, he said, was made possible with the commitment of members of the committee and the corporation of delegates as well as all the aspirants.

Fayemi said this while presenting the committee report to the party chairman, Chief John Oyegun, at the party national headquarters, in Abuja, on Wednesday.

According to him, despite earlier misgivings, the choice of Lagos as venue for the event turned out to be a good one for the party in spite of all the challenges.

Fayemi said, We cannot be mentioning the hostility of the federal government in refusing us the use of the National Stadium as the complementary venue to the convention that we organised, we dont think such intolerance should be accommodated in the genius democracy.

He also gave some details about how the committee achieved the feat of giving the party the acclaimed transparent process.

The committee chairman said, We broke our works into eight sub-committee in all, we had electoral committee, security sub-committee, entertainment sub-committee, the accreditation sub-committee, media and publicity sub-committee, finance sub-committee, transport and accommodation sub-committee.

Those sub-committees worked tirelessly to ensure that we had a good convention which was mostly smooth in all respect.

The aspirants cooperated with us and the innovation we must commend the party for, which also contributed to the success of the convention, was the inclusion of representative of aspirant representatives. It is something we will recommend for every convention of the party, because that singular act saved us of a lot of rumours because the representative of the aspirants will have quenched the fire even before it gets to us and they were readily available to their own aspirants and also readily available to us and we were able to solve a lot of problems because of that.

He further explained that the involvement of representatives of the aspirants contributed, in no small measure, to the success of the event because they were part of the process from the beginning.

Tinubu pledges to support Buhari, Osinbajo

The National Leader, All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has pledged to support the candidacy of APC presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and his running mate, Prof. Yemi Osibajo.

Tinubu, in a statement in Abuja, said though he was offered the position of the running mate by Buhari, he said he decided to maintain his position as a national leader.

He said, There came a time during the course of the events when our Presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, offered me the Vice Presidential slot. Being a normal human being, I was deeply moved and honoured that he would consider me for the position. Being a patriot, I had to weigh my potential candidacy in all of its dimensions.

I have concluded that the interest of the party, our campaign and that of the nation are better served if I retain my position as the National leader of the APC, allowing me to be a bridge builder across all divides.

I sincerely commit myself to the rescue agenda of General Buhari and Professor Osinbajo.

I declare to you, I will work and dedicate myself so that our ticket succeeds and wins the 2015 election not for his good, not for my good, not even for the partys good but for the good of our nation.
