Justice Department announces protections for trangender employees

WASHINGTON, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Attorney General Eric Holder announced expanded protection for transgender government employees Thursday, allowing the Justice Department to file claims against employers accused of discriminating based on gender identity.

The expanded protections come from Holder's clarified interpretation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits workplace discrimination due to racial, gender or religious bias. Holder will no longer maintain the previously established position that "Title VII's prohibition against discrimination based on sex does not encompass gender identity per se."

"This important shift will ensure that the protections of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 are extended to those who suffer discrimination based on gender identity, including transgender status," wrote Holder.

"This will help to foster fair and consistent treatment for all claimants. And it reaffirms the Justice Department's commitment to protecting the civil rights of all Americans."

Holder noted the Congress responsible for the Civil Rights Act "may not have had [transgender] claims in mind when it enacted Title VII," however, "the Supreme Court has made clear that Title VII must be interpreted according to its plain text."

"The decision by Attorney General Holder will go a long way toward advancing equality for the transgender community," praised Sarah Warbelow, legal director for the Human Rights Campaign. In addition to various civil rights causes, the Human Rights Campaign provides legal assistace for transgender employees seeking action against discriminatory employers.

"Transgender people continue to face some of the highest levels of discrimination in the workplace. We are thrilled to see the Department of Justice take this important step."

Liverpool FC 'cursed by God for supporting gay pride' says far right politician Paul Rimmer

Far right politician Paul Rimmer was condemned after claiming Liverpool FC have been cursed by God for promoting homosexuality.

English Democrat Paul Rimmers comments have gone viral after he made the alleged homophobic remarks on his public Facebook page in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The former UKIP candidate and ex-BNP activist posted: From the Bible, Sodomy defiles a Nation. Those who promote it will be punished & vomited out of the Land. Lev.18.23.

In 2012 Liverpool FC sponsored the Citys Gay Pride Parade. Unless they repent they will be under a continual curse.

Mr Rimmer, who was arrested in 2012 after challenging a gay rights rainbow flag flown at Toxteths Admiral Street police station, then suggested this had cost the Reds the Premier League title in May.

The pub doorman, who intends to stand for Liverpool Mayor in 2016 having lost out in 2012, said: Liverpool were amazing last year, but the title was denied them.

It was later pointed out to the 52-year-old that his Bible quote in fact refers to bestiality, not homosexuality, and he quoted further scripture.

English Democrat Paul Rimmer suggesting Liverpool FC's indifferent form was due to the club 'promoting' homosexuality

He added: Everyone knows homosexuality is wrong, but now we have to pretend its nice & normal and anyone who points out its a perversion is evil. This is a deep moral & spiritual sickness in our nation.

Suspect at large after armed robbery

Sedalia Police Department officers are searching for a black male wearing a hoodie after an armed robbery and shooting in downtown Sedalia Thursday afternoon.

At approximately 1:32 p.m., a black male entered Gold Buyer, 108 S. Ohio Ave., and shot the owner/operator twice, according to SPD Sgt. Chet Mackiewicz, who spoke with the Democrat at the scene shortly after the incident. SPD Chief John DeGonia told the Democrat at 3:30 p.m. the owner is Wesley Brown, and he was taken to Bothwell Regional Health Center.

The owner, who Mackiewicz said is expected to be OK, was the only person in the shop at the time of the robbery, along with his dog.

We couldnt talk to the owner much, Mackiewicz said. He will be OK, but he was shot and in serious condition. It happened quickly as far as we know. We dont know what direction the suspect was headed because the owner was shot and he went down.

The suspect fled the scene with unknown property from the business.

We dont know the specifics of what was stolen, Mackiewicz said. We dont know, other than money and property.

The victims dog was taken to safety by SPD Animal Control, and officers are attempting to contact the victims family.

Mike Ronspiez and Heidi Williams, both of Sedalia, told the Democrat they were walking down Ohio just prior to the incident, and stopped outside the store as Ronspiez considered taking a silver ring into the store for an appraisal.

We were walking down Ohio Street and by the time we got down to that area we were walking right by the We Buy Gold, it must have been roughly 1:30 p.m., Ronspiez said. We stood in front of that building for about two minutes, deciding if we were going to go in there or go around the corner because she wanted to look at some sofas. Instead we went to the Maple Leaf and looked around. We must have been in there about 10 minutes and when we came back out ambulances and cops were there and everything was going crazy.

Williams added: If we had gone in there then we might be dead now.
