Obama marks end of Afghan mission as 'milestone'

President Obama marked the end of Americas longest-ever war Sunday by praising Americans who died in the post-9/11 mission in Afghanistan and trumpeting his efforts to bring troops home, even as he committed to leaving a limited military presence to hand over the bulk of the fight against the Taliban to Afghan forces.

For more than 13 years, ever since nearly 3,000 innocent lives were taken from us on 9/11, our nation has been at war in Afghanistan, Mr. Obama said in a statement released by the White House. Now, thanks to the extraordinary sacrifices of our men and women in uniform, our combat mission in Afghanistan is ending, and the longest war in American history is coming to a responsible conclusion.

His remarks coincided with a ceremony in the Afghan capital of Kabul to mark the official end of the mission. In front of a small, hand-picked audience at the headquarters of the NATO mission, the green-and-white flag of the International Security Assistance Force was ceremonially rolled up and sheathed, and the flag of the new international mission called Resolute Support was hoisted.

U.S. Gen. John Campbell, commander of ISAF, commemorated the 3,500 international soldiers killed on Afghan battlefields and praised the countrys army for giving him confidence that they are able to take on the fight alone.

Resolute Support will serve as the bedrock of an enduring partnership between NATO and Afghanistan, Gen. Campbell told an audience of Afghan and international military officers and officials, as well as diplomats and journalists.

The road before us remains challenging, but we will triumph, he added.

Beginning Jan. 1, the new mission will provide training and support for Afghanistans military, with the U.S. accounting for almost 11,000 of the 13,500 members of the residual force.

On Sunday, the Pentagon said the U.S. segment of the mission would be known as Operation Freedoms Sentinel.

Our personnel will continue to face risks, but this reflects the enduring commitment of the United States to the Afghan people and to a united, secure and sovereign Afghanistan that is never again used as a source of attacks against our nation, Mr. Obama said.

Obasanjos desire for change unites us -APC

The All Progressives Congress has said former President Olusegun Obasanjo, was sympathetic to the cause of the party because of his desire for positive change in 2015. Deputy National Chairman (North) of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Lawal Shuaibu said this in an interview with reporters in Abuja, on Sunday. He noted that the former President who is still an active member of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, was like most Nigerians; desirous of an end to maladministration and impunity. According to him, while it was true that Obasanjo is not a card carrying member of the APC, his interest in bringing about a change in the way things are done is glaring.

Shuaibu said, We dont have any connection with Obasanjo other than Obasanjo sympathising with anybody that could effect change in this country. He is not a member of our party mind you, he is still a PDP man but for the fact that he is a former democratic President in this country people listen to him. More often than not, some people go to seek for his advice both from PDP, APC and other parties. But he is interested in the type of change we are driving at, so he is to a certain extent sympathetic with the APC.

He noted that there was nothing wrong with the APC receiving members of the PDP who have come to realise their mistakes. The APC chieftain said the party has put in place a machinery to ensure strict adherence to its policies and programmes as contained in its manifesto. He explained that parties which came together to form the APC have all agreed to adhere strictly to the code of conduct as well as ethics enshrined in the founding principles of the new party. Shuaibu also assured Nigerians that the APC will strictly observe the provisions of its constitution and the party manifesto as well as ensure the supremacy of the party. Reacting to the over N21 billion raised by PDP to fund President Jonathans re-election, Shuaibu said his party was not worried. He, however, said that of the APC will be transparent and made public in a manner consistent with its avowed commitment to transparency.

Nigeria: I'll Meet Other Generals to Draft Anti-Terror Plan – Buhari

press release

The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Wednesday said that though Nigeria is a rich nation, its people are extremely poor due to bad governance.

He also promised to involve serving and retired military generals to devise an effective strategy to crush insurgency in the country, if elected as President in 2015.

Buhari, in his Christmas goodwill message signed by the Director of Communications, Buhari Campaign Organisation, Mr. Dele Alake, expressed displeasure at the security challenges in the country and the poor state of Nigerian roads.

He said his administration would focus on how best to "make the condition of living of the common man the index for the assessment of our policies and not the amount of billionaires our administration would have made."

Buhari felicitated with Christians in the country as they celebrated Christmas, assuring Nigerians that they would have better reasons to celebrate the festival if he is elected in 2015.

He said, "On my part, I intend to initiate consultations with serving generals and those who have served our country and distinguished themselves on the battlefield across the world to work out an alternative and effective strategy to crush this insurgency within the shortest possible time if elected president on February 14, 2015.

"I have said that I live the life of a pensioner. I share the burden and anxiety of majority of our poor, powerless people. I have offered myself on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, the party of change, because I desire to give back to a country that clothed, fed and trained me to be what I am today. Our people are poor. But our country is rich."

The former Head of State, who berated the President Goodluck Jonathan administration over rising poverty in the country, said, "In a nation where a few individuals could raise N21bn because they wanted to make their friend President, millions of citizens, who truly own the resources being accumulated by a few, are left to suffer in sorrow, tears and blood.

Buhari said while many Nigerians travelling towards the eastern part of the country would encounter "the failed promises of the Second Niger Bridge;" those travelling through the South-West would "have to bear the gridlock on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway."
