Is Keyword Research Relevant For 2015?

A new year is upon us, and its time to reevaluate our strategies, set a course for our marketing spend, and move forward in the most logical, cost-effective way possible for our businesses. In the world of SEO, you cant take anything for granted. The landscape is constantly shifting in response to new technologies, Google algorithm updates, and countless other environmental factors that can impact a necessary change in tactics.

Keyword research, long held as a standard in the world of SEO, is evolving, and the diminished significance of optimizing for keywords is causing many search marketers to wonder whether targeted keyword research is still worthwhile in the new year and moving forward.

The Relevance of Keyword Research

For years, SEO was fully dependent on keywords, the words and phrases used for search queries. Businesses would research potential keywords their customers might use in such a query, evaluate them in terms of potential (by analyzing their total search volume), and in terms of opportunity (by analyzing the competition currently competing for those words). The most successful businesses optimizing for search engines were the ones who found keywords in that perfect balance between high search volume and low competition.

Businesses used to be able to measure their progress based on where they ranked for certain keywordsafter selecting a target phrase and optimizing for it, a company could watch their website climb in search rankings for that term from the several-hundreds to the top ten. They could acquire this data right in Google Analytics, which would even break down the amount of traffic each keyword phrase was responsible for bringing to the site.

Today, Google Analytics no longer offers this keyword-specific traffic information. Its one in a series of moves by Google to restrict information on keywords and dissuade businesses from pursuing a wholly keyword-based strategy. In Googles opinion, the presence of keyword-specific information leads to companies over-optimizing for specific keywords instead of focusing on user experience, or other quality factors for their site.

As such, evaluating the impact of your keyword-specific optimizing efforts is more difficult. Its easy to see where you rank for given keywords by performing test searches or by using a third party automated tool, and its easy to calculate keyword search volume using Googles Keyword Planner, but the traffic data is virtually gone. This is a wrinkle in the fabric of keyword research, and has been a thorn in the side of search marketers still relying on keyword data to project their results.
