With cops laid to rest, Sharpton plans to restart protests

Now that two slain cops have been buried, the Rev. Al Sharpton plans to resume kicking dirt on the NYPD.

The head of the Staten Island chapter of Sharptons National Action Network said anti-cop protesters would return to the boroughs state courthouse on Tuesday.

Cynthia Davis said NAN suspended its twice-weekly demonstrations out of respect to slain cops Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu and their families.

Ramos and Liu were assassinated on Dec. 20 by a gunman who wrote online that he wanted to avenge the uncharged police killings of Eric Garner in Staten Island and Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo.

We were not going to protest before those officers were laid to rest properly, and unlike the police officers who decided to take protests to a funeral, we had much more respect than that, Davis said.

She said the courthouse protests would continue until we feel like we have gotten justice in the Garner case, in which a grand jury declined to indict cop Daniel Pantaleo.

Monday, January 5, 2015 | 8:04 p.m. CST; updated 11:08 p.m. CST, Monday, January 5, 2015

COLUMBIA Columbia police and a crime scene investigation van were still at the scene Monday afternoon of a fatal shooting in a north Columbia subdivision.

Yellow police tape surrounded the house at 5001 Silver Mill Drive, where neighbors said the shooting occurred. The house is on the far eastern edge of the Forest Ridge Subdivision, along a bend in the road edged by woods.

Backyards near the house were also cordoned off with yellow tape.

No arrests were made Monday, but the victim was identified as Deante Mardell Smith,17, whose address was listed as Andy Drive in Columbia, according to online court records.

Investigators and uniformed police officers could be seen combing the area around the site, taking measured steps as they scanned the ground.

One house, up the road about 100 yards from where the shots were fired, had a bullet hole in the center of its tan garage door.

According to a Columbia Police Department news release, officers were responding to a report of armed robbery about 4 p.m. Sunday in the 5000 block of Silver Mill Drive when multiple calls came in reporting shots fired in the area.

A second person was injured in the incident in which multiple shots were fired, striking several nearby houses.

When officers got there, they found Smith, who was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead, according to the release.
