Some of the thinking out there is troubling – Ceres Courier

If you want to know why California has landed in the hands of far left liberals, look no farther than the thinking represented in a comment made on the Stanislaus County Districts Facebook page. The DA staff announced that Lester Portillo pled guilty in murdering a south Modesto store clerk for not selling him loosies, or single cigarettes.

A Facebook user named Leslie Silva went on a rant of lunacy on Friday when she posted this: Stanislaus County District Attorney & Local Government Representatives you hand out life sentences to youth of color, and the percentage of the prison population is exponentially more than any other race, you hand out those life sentences from the day they are born and have done so generation after generation. The history of Hispanic oppression is prominent to Central Valley but more prominent is the power of the people when we come together as one and when our rights come under attack, we stand up fight back. All children deserve better education, shelter, food, and environment they can thrive in but that is not the case in Stanislaus County.

Wait. Lester Portillo KILLED SOMEBODY! This is not about Hispanics rights coming under attack. This is about somebody who took away all rights of a 31-year-old victim in Jagjeet Singh, and who deserves far more than 25 years in prison.

I fully appreciated the response of Carlo Alfaro, who replied to Silva: Im a youth of color(Mexican nationality). I have yet to receive my life sentence and I was born 23 years ago. Military five years now as well. Youre delusional, choosing victimization and playing the race card. Dont tell me its any different from up here in Alameda County. You look past the fact that this guy killed somebody simply because hes hispanic? And that he had no prior record? HELLO! He still killed somebody. Dont forget to pray for yourself. Please dont have kids.

Dont think for a moment that folks with Leslie Silvas line of thinking voted for anybody but Gavin Newsom for governor. This is why California has no chance of curing what ails it liberalism.

Theirs is a confusing message. I agree with Renee Leveque who suggested last week that it seems silly that the City Council wants to outlaw parking on grass when they seem to be drifting to allowing people to keep their trash cans in public view.

* * * * *

Willie Nelson, who appeared in concert at The Fruit Yard northeast of Hughson earlier this year, made news last week when he announced he has given up marijuana smoking 65 years later.

He cited health reasons. He told a reporter: Ive mistreated myself since I was this big, as he motioned toward the ground.

I could never figure out why people extol the virtues of smoking pot when its not good for anyone to put any kind of smoke in the lungs. Its just common sense.

Its astounding how, in this age of information overload, ill-informed the public can be.

Last week our Facebook post promoting the article, Council mulls controls on noise, junk vehicles, drew a comment that couldnt have been farther from the truth. One couple (Steve and Susan Gordo) wrote: Wow. Because government knows best. Meanwhile, how is being a Sanctuary City helping Ceres? This kind of invasion of property rights bothers me.

Besides a non-running car, up on blocks, in the front yard, is a icon of country-western heritage.

My point here is not that some people think it idyllic that a car on blocks is symbolic of country western heritage but to not how wrong they are about sanctuary city status of Ceres. Ceres is not nor ever has been a sanctuary city, I informed them. The reply was: Admittedly it was hearsay, but when I worked there in the late 2000s, I was given the impression it was. I am glad if it is not a Sanctuary City.

The coast lines of the world have been eroding for time immoral. There have been floods galore, including the great flood of the Mississippi in 1927 and the Los Angeles flood of 1938 and every flood to hit North America before recorded time. Thereve been mudslides, earthquakes and fires since the dawn of the earth. Galveston, Texas was wiped away in the hurricane of 1900. A tornado destroyed Natchez, Mississippi on May 7, 1840, killing 317 and injuring 109.

And now state agencies like Caltrans expect us to swallow the swill of climate change. You do understand its because the Democrats control the state government and love all the controls and taxes that come with the climate change hoax, dont you?

I chuckled at a press release sent to us by Caltrans last week announcing As part of an effort to identify how climate change will have on Californias complex transportation system that millions rely on, Caltrans is conducting region-specific climate change vulnerability assessments for each of Caltrans 12 districts.

In the release, climate change Kool-Aid drinker and director Toks Omishakin said this: Too many Californians have already experienced the effects of climate change including fires, flooding and mudslides impacting all modes of travel, the erosion of coastal highways, and dead and dying trees falling near roadways.

So this state official appointed by Gov. Newsom thinks climate change is responsible for fires, floods and mudslides, the erosion of the coast line? In his mind it couldnt have been the discourse of the planet since God created it! Problems like fires and mudslides and eroding coast lines tend to be magnified the more human population encroaches into areas not previously populated. I mean, a coastal collapse in Santa Barbara in 1455 wouldnt have affected anyone for Highway 1 wasnt there at the time. Everyone knows the coast line erodes and to put a house right at itss edge is asking for trouble.

I think people are wising up to this constant drumbeat of climate change nonsense.

If youve paid attention to the supreme arrogance of our governor, youve probably noticed how incredibly dismissive he is of questions from people who point out his hypocrisy.

Newsom suffers from Trump Derangement Syndrome. He loathes the president. At his speech in Fresno last month, Newsom took swipes at Trump to antagonize the president by saying he wasnt hugged enough by his father enough. When asked if trading insults with Trump and his supporters I am among them is good for political discourse, Newsom waived them off with his typical hubris. You should ask him, Newsom said. I am just responding to these assaults.

Doesnt that sound like something your kid said when they continued a verbal fight?

When Trump called Newsom on his radically environmental-motivated lack of forest maintenance, Newsom was equally dismissive, saying, You dont believe in climate change. You are excused from this conversation.

So with a sweep of his hand, Newsom ignores that his environmental worship has led to failure to clean up forest floors to avoid future fire. He doesnt care.

Newsom said Trumps childishness is legendary.

I say look in the mirror.

I wish I had something to Jerry Nadler when I came face to face with him in Memphis in September. He happened to stroll by me and I recognized the congressman who is trying to conduct a coup against Trump.

I read last week that the Democrat congressman privately told others that Im not going to take any s---. I wish now that I would have told Nadler he is full of s--- for making up charges for impeachment.

We can finally take a collective sigh of relief now that Kamala Harris is no longer a candidate for president. It was a disastrous candidacy, one in which she suggested all private health insurance needs to go the way of the dinosaur.

Unfortunately we have to endure as she takes her progressive brand of political ideology to represent us in the U.S. Senate.

Its shameful that the Al Sharpton types bemoaned the fact that all white candidates were to be in the next debate.

She engaged in divisive rhetoric, claiming to side with the poor blacks in her native Oakland all while living in the celebrity enclave of Brentwood. Talk about a hypocritical situation.

Harris indeed none of the Democrats had a compelling message. Its the same old class and race warfare bit. In January when actor Jussie Smollett said he was assaulted in Chicago by MAGA wearing Trump supporters, Harris (in Obama style) rushed without fact to condemn the attack an attempted modern-day lynching. When Smollett was caught staging the attack to get sympathy and publicity, a clueless Harris fumbled for 20 seconds on camera, looking to staffers, before faking this: the facts are still unfolding and, um, Im very, uh, concerned.

The truth is, Trump is more popular today with blacks than other presidents probably because blacks are faring much better under Trump than Obama.

Is the Speaker of the House totally bonkers? Nancy lost it big time last week when a reporter asked if the impeachment effort against Trump was driven by hate. Its a fair question given the Democrats have yet to produce any evidence whatsoever that our president broke any laws and were talking impeachment before he even took the oath of office on Jan. 20, 2017. Flustered, she took on the demeanor of a senile old schoolmarm lecturing a student about how her House members dont hate anybody in the world. She does a darn good imitation of it though and went on to call Trump a coward when it comes to helping our kids who are afraid of gun violence. I think he is cruel when he doesnt deal with helping our Dreamers of which we are very proud. I think he is in denial about the climate crisis. As she unraveled, realizing those were political issues having nothing to do with impeachment, Crazy Nancy said the impeachment was about the Constitution.

Ill say there is a constitutional crisis but not in the way she seems to think. She is thwarting the Constitution. The real assault to our democracy is lawmakers like Pelosi who brush aside facts to stay laser-focused on a partisan removal of a president because they dont like his politics or his tweets. If anybody needs to be impeached it is the corrupt Democrat Party leadership in the House of Representatives.

* * * * *

In April Speaker Pelosi said that a glass of water with a letter D next to it would win an election in a safe congressional district like the one represented by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She is being opposed by a number of Republicans. Safe bet is she gets re-elected in New Yorks 14th Congressional District since there are 214,750 registered Democratic voters in the district and only 110,000 registered Republicans.

So when actor Rob Schneider read a Tweet made by Ayaan Hirsi Ali about the Lefts ignorance of Stalins tyranny, he responded with: Unfortunately, people in California would vote for a bowl of s*** if it had D next to it.

Sad but true.

The Uber safety report is out. While most rides go off safely, the report should give pause for anyone climbing in a private car driven by an Uber, or Lyft driver.

During the years 2017 and 2018, Uber rides experienced 5,981 reports of sexual assault lodged against them, and of those, 464 were rape allegations.

The report showed that about 92 percent of the victims of rape were riders and about seven percent of the victims were drivers. Women and female-identifying individuals made up 89 percent of the victims with men and male-identifying individuals comprising about 8 percent of victims.

Just be careful out there.

If youre curious about what were getting for the money we spend on education, look no further than recently interviewed university students who thought President Trump was worse than Adolf Hitler, didnt recognize Joseph Stalin, and ranked Mark Zuckerberg as better than Jesus.

The college in question of course is one in California Cal State Northridge. Without providing names, Will Witt showed students pictures of Barack Obama, Jesus, Donald Trump, Adolf Hitler, Hillary Clinton, Ronald Reagan, and Mark Zuckerberg, and asked the undergrads to rank them from worst to best.

A number of students presented didnt recognize Joseph Stalin, the major 20th-century figure and Soviet leader who murdered approximately 20 million people.

One black student freely admitted that he ranked Obama highly because he was a black president and then said, black power. When asked What was your favorite thing about Obama? the student replied, Being black.

The same black student and the female student at5 his side agreed that Trump was worse than Hitler and when asked why the young man said that Trump was childish while the young lady stated that the president wanted to eliminate food stamps. When questioned about whether that trimming government expenses were worse than killing six million Jews, the young lady said, he (Hitler) did that?

And you wonder why we get the elected officials we get in California?

The CBS headline left me scratching my head: California becomes first state to ban discrimination against natural hair.

What was this about? There he was, Gov. Newsom signing another piece of earth-shakering legislation with that silly grin on his face.

The first paragraph: A new law signed Wednesday by Gov. Gavin Newsom makes California the first state to ban discrimination against black students and employees over their natural hairstyles. The authors of this new law say women with kinky and curly hair are sometimes subject to unequal treatment, and can even be viewed as inferior.

Specifically the legislation was based on Chastity Jones who fought a lawsuit for 10 years when her employer took back a job offer at an Alabama call center because Jones refused to cut her hair. She had dreadlocks and wouldnt cut them off.

Its news to me that dreadlocks are natural. Dreadlocks take a lot of work.Dreadlocks also dont look professional, thats why some companies ban them.

By the way, author of the bill state Sen. Holly Mitchell wears tiny strands of dreadlocks in her hair and my first reaction seeing them was they look like earthworms dangling about her head. Not cute.

My own daughter-in-law years before she married my son was hired from McDonalds because she dyed her hair pink. She didnt sue.

Newsom signed the bill, saying: Theres a human element to this. We dont want to diminish people, we dont want to demean people We have to own up to the sins of the past.

What sins of the past is he referring to? Slavery? This issue of dreadlocks has nothing to do with race. I bet all the sloven employees who come to work wearing Phyllis Diller style just-got-up-in-the-morning hair are beaming that they are now protected from being fired.

So now that California and New York bastions of liberalism have passed the CROWN (Creating a Respectful and Open Workplace) Act, maybe Newsom will pass a law saying people can show up to professional offices in pajamas and torn jeans.

Maybe Newsom can do something worthwhile like a statewide ban on homeless people crapping or urinating on the sidewalks and in our parks. Or maybe lowering taxes since hes sitting on a huge surplus. Or maybe get to the business of lowering construction costs.

Get a confusing notice from the county clerk? Heres what it means – Siskiyou Daily News

Conservative voters became outraged as they read further and saw only three options listed on the crossover ballot postcard: American Independent, Democratic or Libertarian. What about Republicans?

Some voters were confused last week when they opened a notice from the Siskiyou County Clerks office asking them to select a political party ballot for the March 3 presidential primary election.

Conservative voters became outraged as they read further and saw only three options listed on the crossover ballot postcard: American Independent, Democratic or Libertarian. What about Republicans?

The notices are the result of federal laws that govern presidential elections under the closed primary system, explained Siskiyou County Clerk Laura Bynum, and they were only sent to voters who are registered as No Party Preference (formerly Decline to State) Unknown, or a non-qualified political party. And although they are confusing, the notices are not an effort by Siskiyou County officials to drum up Democratic voters.

Historically, the Republican party does not open their primary to other political affiliations, said Bynum. Neither do the Peace and Freedom or Green parties, which is why theyre not listed as options for NPP voters, either. The American Independent, Democratic and Libertarian parties are the only parties that opened their Primary Election to NPP voters, Bynum said.

If you believe that youre a registered Republican, or one of the other five qualifying parties, and you received the notice, this indicates that somewhere along the way, your political party was changed.

This is not unheard of, said Bynum, because people may have inadvertently updated their political affiliation at the DMV, said Bynum.

It happens sometimes when people are renewing their license and they dont select an option for a political party,Bynum said. That kicks them into the Unknown category.

If you find yourself in this situation, Bynum suggests calling her office at (530) 842-8084, where they can do some research to see when your political affiliation was changed and to provide direction on a case by case basis.

The other option is to re-register to vote, but that process must be completed by Feb. 17 in order to vote in the March 3 primary. Voters can register to vote or update their registration status at http://www.registertovote.ca.gov, or by picking up a voter registration card at post offices and libraries throughout the county, or call the County Clerks office and request one be mailed to them. Voters can also access http://www.myvoterstatus.com to see how they are currently registered.

Although California has a top two primary process, where the top two vote-getters regardless of political party will appear on the general election ballot, the presidential election falls under federal law therefore and a modified closed election process is used.

The postcards arent unique to Siskiyou County, Bynum added. Every California county sent them out last week, or they will this week.

History behind Californias primary election system

A closed primary system governed California's primary elections until 1996, according to information on California Secretary of State Alex Padillas website. In a closed primary, only voters who are registered members of a political party may vote the ballot of that political party.

This changed with Proposition 198 after the March 26 primary election. Prop. 198 changed the closed primary system to what is known as a blanket or open primary, in which all registered voters may vote for any candidate, regardless of political affiliation and without a declaration of political faith or allegiance.

On June 26, 2000, the United States Supreme Court issued a decision in California Democratic Party, et. al. v. Jones, stating that Californias open primary system was unconstitutional because it violated a political partys First Amendment right of association, according to the Secretary of States website.

Californias current modified closed primary system for presidential elections took effect on Jan. 1, 2001. Senate Bill 28 implemented the current modified closed primary system that permitted voters who had declined to provide a political party preference to participate in a primary election if authorized by an individual partys rules and duly noticed by the Secretary of State.

An NPP voter may request the ballot of one of the political parties, if any, that authorizes NPP voters to vote in the presidential primary election, which is where the postcards come in.

MassGOP snubs Weld on Mass. ballot access – The Boston Globe

Hell have Secretary of State William Galvin, a Democrat, to credit, instead.

Galvin has given all four political parties in Massachusetts -- including the Democratic, Republican, Green-Rainbow and Libertarian parties -- until Friday to submit a list of candidates they want to appear on their Super Tuesday primary ballots.

The lists are one of three ways a candidate can qualify for the presidential ballot in Massachusetts, and the MassGOP on Thursday submitted only the name of incumbent President Trump.

"Having a sitting President as the only name on the potential candidate list is not unprecedented, and is in fact, an established procedure," MassGOP Chair Jim Lyons wrote.

A spokeswoman for Galvin told the News Service on Tuesday that if that were to happen the secretary intended to put Weld's name on the ballot himself.

Weld, who briefly left the Republican Party in 2016 to run as the vice presidential nominee on the Libertarian ticket, is mounting a long-shot primary challenge to President Trump, hoping to damage the incumbent in the process.

The former governor has predicted dire consequences for the Republican Party if Trump is not impeached and removed from office, a message that runs counter to Lyons's support for the president.

Weld spokesman Joe Hunter told the News Service Wednesday that the campaign was in contact with the MassGOP, but would pursue "whichever of the three avenues to the ballot is the most appropriate."

"We are working on ballot access in numerous states on a daily basis, and of course, Massachusetts is at the top of the list," Hunter said.

National Candidates

State law allows the secretary of state to unilaterally put a candidate on the primary ballot if they have determined the candidate to be "generally advocated or recognized in national news media throughout the United States."

The latest WBUR poll of New Hampshire Republicans had the former Massachusetts governor trailing the president with 9 percent of the vote. Trump led Weld 82 percent to 18 percent in an Emerson College poll of Massachusetts Republicans from April.

"I've already had a conversation with Mr. Lyons about this, and I told him that we had done our review and we thought Mr. Weld, as well as a former Congressman from Illinois, were national candidates," Galvin told the News Service on Thursday.

In addition to Weld, the secretary was referring to former Republican Congressman Joe Walsh. There's a fourth potential candidate - Roque de la Fuente - who Galvin said he does not consider to be a nationally recognized candidate who will likely have to turn in 2,500 signatures if he wants to qualify for the GOP primary. De la Fuentes ran as a Democrat in 2016 when he also took the signature route to the ballot.

A spokesman for the Democratic Party said they intended to submit their list to Galvin's office on Friday, and would not provide an early tally of the names that will be on it.

According to Galvin's office, the campaigns of entrepreneur Andrew Yang and Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard have both taken out nomination papers in an "abundance of caution," but it is expected they will be on the Democratic Party's list and will not have to return signatures.

Galvin also said he had spoken to Democratic Party Chairman Gus Bickford about Galvin's belief that Michael Bloomberg should be on the list, even though he was a Republican when he served as mayor of New York City.

I dont think theres any doubt that Bickford is going to put him on, I dont think, but I dont know with Bickford either, Galvin said.

Lyons said that during an incumbent presidency neither political party has submitted names other than that of the sitting president seeking re-election.

"We will follow set protocol and do the same, as has been done before in 2012 under Democratic President Barack Obama and in 2004 under Republican President George W. Bush," Lyons wrote.

Both Obama and Bush ran virtually unopposed in their re-election bids by any nationally known figures with the stature of someone like Weld.

But in 1992, MassGOP Chairman Leon Lombardi only put forward the name of President George H.W. Bush for the ballot, despite the incumbent being challenged by conservative commentator Pat Buchanan. Buchanan did end up getting onto the Massachusetts primary ballot that year, and won almost 75,000 votes, or 28 percent.

The parties, by law, have until Jan. 3 to submit their lists, but Galvin said he's following the same timeline he used during the last cycle in order to prepare ballots ahead of the Jan. 18 deadline to make them available to military and overseas voters.

Galvin plans to hold a drawing to determine the order of placement on the ballots on Dec. 20, and candidates have until Jan. 10 to withdraw and have their names removed.

Tom Mountain, a Trump campaign spokesman in Massachusetts and New Hampshire and a member of the MassGOP state committee, has previously said that Weld should give up on his campaign.

"If he has any dignity he should ride off into the sunset," Mountain told the News Service last month after Weld held an event to call for Trump's impeachment. "No one is taking Bill Weld seriously except Bill Weld."

Gov. Charlie Baker suggested recently that he thought the Republican primary in Massachusetts would be a low-turnout affair with or without Weld on the ballot.

When discussing whether to schedule a special election for a state Senate seat on the same day as the primaries, Baker said, "I think having a general election for a state Senate seat on the same day as a presidential primary when you have numerous candidates running on one side, and for all intents and purposes, one and maybe two depending upon how the secretary of state puts the ballot together, on the other doesn't really give voters an opportunity to tune in on the state Senate race, which is what I would like to see them do in that race."

Baker has described Weld as a political mentor, but so far has declined to endorse his former boss over Trump, who he didnt vote for in 2016 and has frequently disagreed with.

Alan Dershowitz to Newsmax TV: Silence of the Libertarians – Newsmax

Professedpurveyors of civil liberties refusing to speak out against releasing of privileged phone recordsare sacrificing their cause"on the alter of Trump's impeachment," according civil liberties legal expert Alan Dershowitz on Newsmax TV.

"Every civil libertarian, the ACLU, everybody who cares about civil liberties in the Constitution should be up in arms at the tactics being used by this congressional committee to obtain evidence,"Dershowitz told Monday's "America Talks Live" about Rep. Adam Schiff's, D-Calif., House Intelligence Committee in pursuit of the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

"And, yet, we don't hear a word from civil libertarians, because they like the end result. They want to see Trump impeached, so they're prepared to sacrifice basic civil liberties on the alter of Trump's impeachment."

Dershowitz rejected House Democrats' partisan arguments for grounds ofimpeachment because "none of them satisfy the constitutional criteria for impeachment" and our democracy's check on their abuse of power will come in the November 2020 elections.

"I think people who vote for impeachment without satisfying the constitutional criteria are going to have to pay a price at the ballot box," Dershowitz told host John Cardillo.

Constitutional checks and balances are also being abused by House Democrats in this impeachment attempt, because they are "ignoring" the Judicial branch to "circumvent the Constitution," according to Dershowitz.

"What's going on for the most part in this impeachment is the Democrats are ignoring the third branch of government, the Judicial branch," Dershowitz said. "They want the president to comply with subpoenas without challenging them in court. They want to get records and documents without going through court procedures.

"What we're seeing is kind of diminishing impact of courts, and the courts are supposed to be the referees between the Executive branch and the Legislative branch. And the Legislative branch in this case is eliminating the courts in trying to circumvent the Constitution."
