The Chess category on Twitch has reached a new milestone of over 21 million hours watched in February 2021, according to data from Rainmaker.gg, StreamElements' analytics partner.

That represents massive growth from February 2020, when it drew 1 million hours watched. StreamElements noted that chess viewership surged in the wake of the Netflix chess drama The Queen's Gambit, which premiered in October 2020, but it has managed to maintain steady growth into the new year.

The new record was not enough to drive chess into the top 10 categories for Twitch viewer hours though. Just Chatting held the top spot with 235 million hours watched, with League of Legends at 144 million and Grand Theft Auto 5 just behind at 135 million hours watched.

Rust, meanwhile, dropped from the no. 2 spot in January 2021 with 189 million to no. 10 at 43 million hours watched.

Chess, meanwhile, occupied the 17th spot based on hours watched, according to a StreamElements spokesperson.

There has also been an increase in women in the top streamers on Twitch, with nine women currently among the top 200 streamers in hours watched compared to two last year.

Both Twitch and Facebook Gaming experienced month-over-month dips in viewership hours during the short month of February, though both boast significant year-over-year growth -- Twitch has grown 82% to 1.86 billion hours watched, while Facebook Gaming grew by 79% to 345 million hours watched.

BHUBANESWAR: KIIT and KISS will be the first-ever educational institution in the country to introduce Chess in the school curriculum. The All India Chess Federation (AICF) in association with the All Odisha Chess Association (AOCA) has decided to introduce this in the school curriculum.According to the policy of the International Chess Federations' (FIDE), Chess should be included in school level study curriculum. It is implemented in different countries across the world. AICF and AOCA have chosen Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) as the first school for introducing Chess in its academic curriculum.AICF secretary Bhagat Singh Chouhan, AICF president Sanjay Kapoor, Ranjan Mohanty, president of AOCA, and Debabrata Bhatta, secretary of AOCA, announced this here on Saturday that the KISS will be the maiden venture in including Chess in its study curriculum.

"This programme will be managed by the International Chess Federation, while KIIT and KISS will provide the required infrastructure. FIDE and AICF will extend all sorts of cooperation," said official sources.

KIIT and KISS founder Achyuta Samanta said this initiative will enable many Chess players of KISS along with players from Odisha to get international exposure. "Students will get immense help from this programme. We will see many tribal students will become Chess players in the future. Besides, this game will help students in their mental growth," he added.

According to stats tracking websites TwitchTracker and SullyGnome, chess is now bigger in viewership than several AAA titles, including Overwatch, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Black Ops, and Rainbow Six: Siege. SullyGnome ranks Chess 22nd in its leaderboards, while TwitchTracker puts it at 20th place, with an estimated daily average viewership of 22-23K.

The chart above shows the viewership growth of chess since January 2020, with the purple line representing peak viewership and the red line representing average. The steady growth is visible, and nowadays, Chess has seen peaks as high as 370,000. These peaks were recorded during the PogChamps 3 tournament an event that pits various popular streamers, such asFlix "xQc" Lengyel, Imane "Pokimane" Anys, and more (our list of top 7 streamers playing chess available here). Netflix's show Queen's Gambit has also been credited with the huge popularization of chess on Twitch and a lot of the biggest streamers on the platform regularly broadcast the millennia-old game. Chess veterans, in turn, have also been exploring the streaming life (read our top 5 list of chess masters to watch on Twitch), following the example of Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura, who has now become the face of chess for the gaming audience.

Chess being bigger than some esports titles is also due to the lull in competition in those titles. The 2021 season of the Overwatch League is not due for another month and there's nothing big happening in Rainbow Six either. What the numbers trend shows, however, is that chess a healthier streaming audience on a daily basis

If chess keeps growing and it probably will, seeing how there's a PogChamps 4 tournament on the horizon it's poised to overtake other big titles on Twitch. Hearthstone and PUBG are ahead by only 2k daily average and if it beats them, chess will be close to a top 15 game on Twitch.

Over the past week or so, its been a real pleasure to watch and sometimes stream the Magnus Carlsen Invitational. During lockdown, weve become accustomed to almost constant top class internet chess, and after a hiatus it was great to have it back.

Of course there are idiosyncrasies to internet chess which are different from normal over-the-board practice. Under a system in which fully half of the players in the preliminary all-play-all progressed to the knockout phase, quick draws made sense and the fact that they were banned as such didnt deter the players from halving out when they wanted. Indeed, with a small twist in move order (you can play Nxd4 and then d5 or d5 and then Nxd4) there were no fewer than eight games, five of them involving Hikaru Nakamura, which ended in a repetition on move 14.

I also doubt whether in an over-the-board tournament the world champion and one of his greatest rivals would, even with nothing to play for, have indulged in the Double Bong Cloud variation.

It aint chessbut, of course, the Bong Cloud is actually a very macho gesture. Will you try to take advantage of my posturing and fire first in the gunfight?

Chess is a highly emotional game, and it requires huge emotional strength to keep yourself together, especially in the final moments when the result is irrevocably determined. There have been at least a couple of instances of this during the Carlsen Invitational (Im writing on Friday morning, so there may have been more instances in the final days).

Luckily for the Dutchman, itwas the last game of the day, so he had time to recover before re-entering battle on the final day,when he immediately beat Daniil Dubov and finished with four draws.

Another instance was the draw that Ian Nepomniachtchi acceded to against Nakamura in a position which turned out to be winning. Watching with an engine, this may have looked like an egregious error, but it absolutely wasnt obvious to me at the time that White can separate his king and pawn with Kc8 and pawn c5 and then win, and while Id have hoped to have seen this in a classical game, in rapid play I suspect Id have made the same mistake as Nepo.

After watching the games I sometimes riff on them later, and the finish of the first day of the semi-final between Carlsen and Nepo led to a thought process which saw Carlsen getting the minor piece ending he wanted but then getting his knight trapped after he took on g3.

It was a ridiculous scenario but led to something a little interesting when I started wondering whether with White having the wrong rooks pawn the ending of White having king, bishop andpawns on e4 andh4 versus Black having king and pawns on e5, f4, g4 and h5 would be winning.

I believe that, as long as the bishop cant get to e8 and the white king cant reach d5, then it is a draw.But a little more riffing led to an attempted stalemate defence which doesnt work and so cant be used as the finish of a probably rather slight study.

There have been examples throughout chess history of people agreeing draws or indeed resigning when they were winning/drawing. I covered a couple of these more than four years ago at the end of 2016, and I am repeating them. The first is Van Popiel v Marco, a very famous example in which Black resigned since he failed to see a winning tactic.The second is the winner of the best blunder competition in Murray Chandlers famous spoof Not the BCM in 1984.

To finish, a very famous example in which Garry Kasparov no less resigned in a drawn position against IBMsmonster Deep Blue.

Later,there was a row after Kasparov alleged that the move 37.Be4! in particular was too sophisticated for machines at the time and must have required human intervention. At the end, he not-unreasonably trusted the monster, but it had succumbed to its own horizon and in fact Black can draw.
