Trump still being investigated over Capitol riot, top prosecutor says – The Guardian

Federal investigators are still examining Donald Trumps role in inciting the attack on the US Capitol.

Michael Sherwin, the departing acting US attorney for the District of Columbia, confirmed that the former president is still under investigation over the 6 January putsch in an interview with CBS 60 Minutes on Sunday.

Maybe the president is culpable, he said.

Sherwin also said there were now more than 400 cases against participants in the riot and said that if it is determined Brian Sicknick, the Capitol police officer who died, did so because he was hit with bear spray, murder charges would likely follow.

Its unequivocal that Trump was the magnet that brought the people to DC on 6 January, Sherwin said. Now the question is, is he criminally culpable for everything that happened during the siege, during the breach?

Based upon what we see in the public record and what we see in public statements in court, we have plenty of people we have soccer moms from Ohio that were arrested saying, Well, I did this because my president said I had to take back our house. That moves the needle towards that direction. Maybe the president is culpable for those actions.

But also, you see in the public record, too, militia members saying, You know what? We did this because Trump just talks a big game. Hes just all talk. We did what he wouldnt do.

Trump addressed a rally outside the White House on 6 January, telling supporters to fight like hell to stop Congress certifying his election defeat by Joe Biden, which he falsely claims was the result of voter fraud. A mob broke into the Capitol, leading to five deaths, including a Trump supporter shot by law enforcement.

Trump was impeached for inciting an insurrection but acquitted when only seven Republican senators could be convinced to vote him guilty.

Lawsuits over the insurrection, one brought by the Democratic congressman Bennie Thompson under the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871, are among proliferating legal threats to Trump now he has lost the protections of office.

More than 100 police officers were allegedly assaulted during the riot. Sicknick died the next day. Cause of death has not been released. But two men have been charged with assaulting the 42-year-old officer with a spray meant to repel bears.

Asked if a determination that Sicknicks death was a direct result of being attacked with the spray would lead to murder charges, Sherwin said: If evidence directly relates that chemical to his death, yeah. We have causation, we have a link. Yes. In that scenario, correct, thats a murder case.

He also said: That day, as bad as it was, could have been a lot worse. Its actually amazing more people werent killed. We found ammunition in [one] vehicle. And also, in the bed of the vehicle were found 11 Molotov cocktails. They were filled with gasoline and Styrofoam. [Lonnie Coffman, the man charged] put Styrofoam in those, according to the [Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives], because when you throw those, when they explode, the Styrofoam will stick to you and act like napalm.

He also said pipe bombs placed near the Capitol by an unidentified suspect were not armed properly.

They were not hoax devices, they were real devices, Sherwin said.

Sherwin also said sedition charges, as yet not part of cases against participants in the riot, were likely.

We tried to move quickly to ensure that there is trust in the rule of law, he said. You are gonna be charged based upon your conduct and your conduct only.

The world looks to us for the rule of law and order and democracy. And that was shattered, I think, on that day. And we have to build ourselves up again. The only way to build ourselves up again is the equal application of the law, to show the rule of law is gonna treat these people fairly under the law.

It Was A Rigged Election: Donald Trump Weighs in on Elections, Teases New Platform in Podcast – Variety

Donald Trump may no longer be POTUS, but his opinions remain as trenchant as ever. In an interview with Fox News contributor Lisa Boothe that launches her new podcast, the former U.S. president held forth on a number of matters.

On the subject of the U.S. presidential elections, which he lost, Trump said: We did much better in the second election than we did in the first election. Much better in every way. If you look at with African Americans, with Asian Americans, with women, with Hispanics, we did much better in every single way. And it was a rigged election. And thats a shame.

Trump is banned for life from Twitter but that appears not to deter him in the least. Im doing things having to do with putting our own platform out there, that youll be hearing about soon, Trump told Boothe.

Youre seeing that we put out statements from the president, et cetera, et cetera, Trump said. And its getting picked up by everybody, everything we say. So if I endorse somebody cause were endorsing some very good people it gets tremendous pickup. I would almost say better than a tweet.

Trump also weighed in on the freedom of the press, or lack thereof.

We dont have a freedom of the press for one thing, Trump said. Certainly you dont have freedom of the press. Big tech has gone wild. And Im able to get the word out becauseeverybody picks it up, including big tech, which is sort of interesting. But other people, when they get canceled, they dont have that. They cant put out a press release that everybody picks up. It doesnt work that way.

Donald Trump Is Drowning in Criminal Investigations and Legally Screwed – Vanity Fair

What does he have to offer anybody? And in fact theres every incentive to crush him, DAntonio told the Post.

Though there are many to choose from, presumably the most worrisome legal issue facing Trump is Vances criminal investigation, which is looking into possible insurance, bank, and tax fraud. Last month, the Manhattan D.A.s officehiredMarkPomerantz, who helped put John Gotti and others involved in organized crime behind bars, to work on the Trump case. Among other things, Pomerantz hasreportedlybeen working on gettingAllen Weisselberg, the Trump Organizations longtime CFO who knows where all the bodies are buried, to flip. Equally terrifying, for someone trying to stay out of prison, is the fact that Vance has something no other investigator looking into Trumps affairs has had before: the ex-presidents tax returns, which the former real estate developer curiously refused to release while running for office and fought tooth and nail to keep secret. After the Supreme Court rejected his last-ditch attempt to keep the information out of Vances hands, Trump flew off the handle, calling himself the victim of the greatest political Witch Hunt in the history of our Country. And while thats not actually true, you can probably understand why he was upset! As former fixer Michael Cohen told the Post, the level of review being undertaken by Vances office, is unprecedented in Trumps corporate history, on par with a proctological exam of the highest order.

P.S. Trump is also financially screwed

Yes, hes still worth some $2.5 billion, but thats down $700 million since he became president and it appears the number may continue to plummet, per the Post:

Several of his hotels and resorts reported sharp downturns in 2020. At Trump Tower in Manhattan, one major commercial tenantTiffany & Co.is planning to vacate its space. Another, Marc Fisher Footwear, stopped paying rent in November, according to a lawsuit the Trump Organization filed against the footwear company this month. The company owes more than $1.4million in back payments, according to the suit.

Meanwhile, thanks to the events of January 6, 2021, Trump can no longer rely on previous sources of income like hosting LPGA events, which may make it difficult to repay the $1 billion he owes creditors. On the other hand, who knows how much money hell make scamming his supporters through his super PAC!

Oh: The officer who sympathetically noted the accused Atlanta shooter had had a bad day has a side gig promoting racist T-shirts

Jay Baker, who told reporters on Wednesday that Robert Aaron Long had had a really bad day and this is what he did while discussing the fact that Long allegedly murdered eight people, is reportedly no longer the spokesman for the case, which makes sense. Per the Daily Beast:

Liberal vs Democrat – Difference

By: Editorial Staff | Updated: Mar-2, 2018

In the US, Liberal and Democratic views often overlap, but is there really a difference between the two?

Modern liberal ideas in the US started to form in the 20th century with the help of great statesmen such as Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson. In most cases, American liberals were at opposition with conservatives, but that was not always the case.

Modern liberalism has always been connected to progressivism and social liberalism, but currently the connection between liberal and progressive ideals has become a topic of much debate.

According to Wikipedia, John F. Kennedy defines a liberal as someone who cares about the welfare of the people their health, their housing, their schools, their civil rights, and their civil liberties

Franklin D. Roosevelt believed that the Government should be able to address the nations problems, and is duty-bound to do so with all its power and authority. This is to ensure that the average person has the right to his own economic and political life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Modern American liberalism is based on the Keynesian economic theory that holds that for a country to be prosperous, the government must be heavily involved in managing every aspect of the countrys economy. Liberals place institutions that fight economic inequality in high regard. They believe everyone should have equal access to healthcare and economic opportunities and also stress the importance of protecting the environment.

Democrats form one of the two most prominent political parties in the US, along with the Republicans. Its roots go back to Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. The Democratic Party we now know today was established around 1828 and is considered the oldest, active political party in the world.

The Democrats once held on to classical liberalist ideals, particularly in the South where populism, or the notion that elites are oppressing the virtuous and can be overthrown if people worked together, was prevalent. In the 1890s, it leaned more to the left in terms of an economic standpoint.

Franklin D. Roosevelt along with his New Deal coalition introduced social-liberal platforms promoting social justice. Today, the Democratic Party is made up of progressives and centrists, and a small percentage of conservative Democrats.

The Democratic Partys ideals are based on modern liberalism principles. It believes that it is the governments job to uphold economic and social equality. Democrats seek to have the government intervene and regulate the economy, introduce social programs, provide universal health care, support labor groups, promote equal economic opportunity, and protect consumer rights and the environment.

So now, whats the difference between a liberal and a democrat?

Democrats are practically liberals, even if they are divided into three types. Liberals believe in social justice and equality (made possible by the government) just as much as Democrats do. Both believe that there can only be liberty if the people are afforded access to important services such as healthcare and education. Liberals and Democrats both agree on protecting the environment. For them, government should be able to regulate the economy to benefit everyone, including bridging the gap between the rich and the poor.
