China and Russia Want to Rule the Global Internet – The Diplomat

As the Winter Olympics kicked off in Beijing, the Chinese and Russian presidents, Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, stood in unity to offer mutual support and to challenge the dominance of the U.S. and Europe. There is more at stake in their renewed close partnership than NATO expansion and the crisis in Ukraine, or the supply of natural gas to China from Russia.

The joint statement that the two countries issued in Beijing proclaimed their support for the internationalization of Internet governance and equal rights of countries to regulate the world-wide web. They pledged to deepen bilateral cooperation in international information security, declared support for an international convention on countering the use of information technologies for criminal purposes, and advocated greater participation in the International Telecommunications Union, the United Nations specialized agency for information and telecommunications technologies, in addressing these issues.

The world should be alarmed by such resolutions from two nations known for censoring the internet, banning social media and messaging platforms, putting dissidents in jail over comments posted online, and launching misinformation campaigns to meddle in elections in other countries, including the U.S.

At the Beijing Winter Olympics, athletes and journalists had to make use of officially provided wi-fi at designated hotels and venues in order to access the unobstructed internet, including services like Twitter, YouTube or Facebook, all banned in China. The mobile app provided by Beijing authorities to all participants My2022 was found by independent researchers to be a Trojan horse that could secretly harvest users data, which, under Chinese laws, can be passed on to the state.

In Russia, Russian authorities successfully demanded the removal of a voting app created by prominent dissident Alexei Navalny from the app stores of both Apple and Google, alleging that it contained illegal content. The country also furthered its censorship efforts to block the use of encryption technology through the Tor browser and several other virtual private network services in 2021, a year that Human Rights Watch called the year of doubling down on Internet censorship.

These acts of censorship and surveillance speak clearly about what kind of vision of internet governance China and Russia have in mind. Their interpretation of internet information security is about the security of their regimes, not of the security and privacy of users inside or outside of their countries. An internet governance framework with such toxic underlying values of censorship and surveillance should be extremely horrifying to anyone.

Particularly for China, however, such attempts to influence and indeed dominate global technology standards and governance are nothing new. Over the last few decades, China has invested heavily to participate in and influence global technology standard bodies. In November 2021, the Communist Party Central Committee and the State Council published the National Standardization Development Outline, spelling outgoals and actions for China Standards 2035. These China standards are by all means meant to be made global.

The European Union has been on high alert about Chinas ambition, and recently outlined a more aggressive approach to setting global standards, in order to ensure its leadership in development areas such as internet technologies, artificial intelligence and green technologies. To the Europeans, it was clear that Chinas standard-setting exercises at the international level were meant to provide a competitive edge to China and its companies.

International technological standards-setting and internet governance frameworks are complex and diverse. It is also important to remember that traditionally standard settings are led by the private sector and research communities, not by state actors, for good reasons. Chinese and Russian representatives should have their seats at the table, but the world must be extremely cautious about such standard-setting processes being taken over by companies controlled by autocratic regimes, tasked with their governments political agenda. It would be even worse if such autocratic governments are to directly steer and dominate such processes.

The EU has disclosed that they would seek to cooperate with U.S. authorities to monitor emerging standards and to unify the positions from both sides of the Atlantic through regular meetings at the Trade and Technology Council. Clearly, the urgency of autocratic competition means that the two sides must coordinate at a much higher administrative level. However, the present animosity between the Western big tech firms and their governments may threaten to divert the Western governments attention from the need to cooperate on the global stage of standards and governance between the private and public sectors, and across nations.

Moreover, just bringing Europe and the U.S. together may not be enough, as players from Asia, Africa, and the rest of the world must be involved, as well as the private sector and civil societies, in setting the standards and governance that will shape the future internet and its next-generation enabling technologies. Only than can the world build a dam against the tides of censorship and surveillance from the emerging alliance of autocratic states.

We must do so to defend and ensure a free, open, secure, and trusted future internet that supports the principles of democracy and human rights by being more open and inclusive, and differentiate that vision against the governance model promoted by China and Russia, one that is designed to censor and surveil in the pretense of security.

PROMOTING A HATER: MSNBC Has Rabid Antisemite Al Sharpton …

In what could only be described as a staggering lack of self-awareness, MSNBC invited rabid antisemite Al Sharpton on to discuss last weekends terrorist attack at a Texas Reform synagogue.

Lest you forget, the deadly Crown Heights antisemitic riots in 1991 are widely blamedon Sharptons race baiting, and he later protested in front of Jewish-owned stores in Harlem that were eventually burned to the ground. Not exactly the person who should be giving his perspective on an anti-Jewish terror attack.

Critics all over social media pounced on the ill-advised choice by MSNBC to have Sharpton on to discuss the incident.

YWN will remind our readers that Al Sharpton wasnt always an unrepentant MSNBC star, and first-in-line to agitate a racial situation anywhere in the country. Thirty years ago a tragic car accidentin Crown Heights Brooklyn escalated into a pogrom against the Jewish people. The media usually gives it a politically correct description: violence between the areas Blacks and Jews. But the violence was not two-sided. The Crown Heights riot was an attack on the Jews by the neighborhoods Caribbean community, fueled in large part by Al Sharpton, the Reverend who does not believe in the commandment about bearing false witness.

Sharpton called Jews diamond merchants during the aftermath of the Crown Heights riots, which took place in Brooklyn in 1991. Sharpton, who led protests that led to the riots, said at the time If the Jews want to get it on, tell them to pin their yarmulkes back and come over to my house.

On the third day following the tragic Crown Heights car accident, Sharpton joined Sonny Carson and led a march. The marchers proceeded through Crown Heights, carrying anti-semitic signs and an Israeli flag was burned. Rioters threw bricks and bottles at police; shots were fired at police and police cars were pelted and overturned, including the Police Commissioners car.

Riots escalated to the extent that a detachment of 200 police officers was overwhelmed and had to retreat for their safety. On August 22, over 1,800 police officers, including mounted and motorcycle units, had been dispatched to stop the attacks on people and property.

Ann Coulter: Have at ’em, Antifa! The new free speech – Today’s News-Herald

In 2017, as fear and loathing of Donald Trump seized the nation, a U.S. mayor got a four-star resort to cancel a conservative conference by threatening to withdraw police and fire protection.

With all the media blubbering about attempts to DESTROY our democracy and violations of constitutional norms, its remarkable that this Howitzer blast to the First Amendment has received barely any attention, much less the front-page coverage it deserves, not even from the conservative press.

The banned conference, you see, was about immigration.

Wow, our elites really dont want Americans thinking about immigration! (Remember, kids: Its a right-wing conspiracy theory and racist, to boot! to think that liberals are using mass immigration to change the country.)

The sponsor of the conference was VDARE, a long-standing immigration website espousing ideas that are basically identical to Trumps 2016 immigration promises both before he made them and after he broke them. The main difference is that the arguments on VDARE are expressed in proper English, and the writers actually believe what they say.

As the 2016 election demonstrated, these ideas are quite popular with a certain segment of voters. Not everyone, just enough to elect a president no one thought could ever be elected, who was loathed by the media, and who was outspent 2-to-1.

Named for Virginia Dare, the first European born on U.S soil, VDARE promotes the novel idea that U.S. immigration policy should benefit Americans. (Obviously, that includes white, Hispanic, Asian and black Americans whom, by the way, mass immigration hurts the most.) Naturally, therefore, it has been designated a white supremacist website by the countrys largest hate group, the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Four months after VDARE signed a contract to hold its annual conference at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort in Colorado Springs, the local mayor, John Suthers nominee for the Liz Cheney Profiles in Courage Award! issued a public announcement accusing VDARE of engaging in hate speech and urging the resort to cancel (OK, whatever), but also vowing to deny any support or resources to this event if the resort honored the contract.

Hey antifa, in case anybodys interested if you firebomb this conference, we wont be sending any firetrucks. And if you want to attack the attendees, there wont be any police showing up to stop you.

The next day, the resort canceled the contract and, per the agreement, paid a kill fee. VDARE sued the mayor, alleging a violation of its First Amendment rights.

Heres the frightening part: The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit (one Obama judge and two G.W. Bush judges; one dissent) found for the mayor on the grounds that its possible that the resort canceled NOT because the mayor announced that there would be no police or fire protection, but because of ... CHARLOTTESVILLE!

Which VDARE had nothing to do with. (Again, VDARE is an immigration website, not a street protest organization.)

If the Supreme Court does not agree to take up this case and brutally slap down the 10th Circuit, free speech will be officially limited to speech acceptable to antifa, working hand-in-hand with liberal mayors and governors.

I have long maintained that the left never truly cared about free speech. They merely pretended to in order to protect the people they actually supported: communists and pornographers. That was the sort of speech that used to get banned.

But today, the speech that gets banned includes statements like: There are only two genders; Maybe we shouldnt defund the police; Affirmative action is unjust; Masks dont work No they work! No, they dont work! Also, apparently, speech asserting that mass immigration has not been an unalloyed good for our country, contributing to our prosperity, cohesiveness and happiness.

One of Justice William Brennans hallowed quotes is: [T]he government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable. Those stirring words were in defense of flag-burning. And heres a famous one from Justice William O. Douglas: Restriction of free thought and free speech is the most dangerous of all subversions. It is the one un-American act that could most easily defeat us. That was about communists.

But ever since conservative speech became the target of censors, liberals adore governmental suppression of speech. (The one, lone exception that proves the rule: Nadine Strossen, former president of the ACLU and author of HATE: Why We Should Resist It With Free Speech, Not Censorship.)

As the 10th Circuit explained, conservative speakers should have no expectation of police and fire protection. Specifically, the majority opinion declared: What VDARE wanted, it had no right to demand municipal resources to monitor a private entitys private event. (Monitor? How about That the city not refuse to send police officers and firetrucks?)

So I guess we can forget that sonorous horse crap about the First Amendment protecting ideas that society finds ... offensive or disagreeable.

The lefts new model is a public-private partnership to prohibit speech unacceptable to Joy Ann Reid.

Henceforth, blue states and cities will be free to shut down conservative speakers, MAGA meetings, Daughters of the American Revolution gatherings or anti-mask protests. Some jackass mayor will claim that the conservatives are threatening to engage in hate speech and deny them police and fire protection (then sit back and wait for the accolades from the media).

With midterms approaching, conservatives are feeling giddy. Everything the left holds dear open borders, racial equity, Defund the Police, critical race theory is toxic to voters. Woo hoo! Were winning!

Not so fast, patriots. While you fist-pump, liberals are busy institutionalizing the censorship of conservatives throughout the nation. You want to talk about institutional bias? How about the systemic bias against any ideas unacceptable to progressives being baked into American society?

If the Supreme Court fails to overturn the outrageous opinion in VDARE Foundation v. City of Colorado Springs, free speechs gravestone will read: Bedrock principle of a nation; 1791-2022.
