‘I Don’t Want to Hear Hillary Clinton Again’: Judge and Alex Jones Lawyer Get into It After Jury Sent Out of Courtroom – Law & Crime

An attempt by an attorney for right-wing broadcaster Alex Jones to inject politics into the cross-examination of a former FBI agent who responded to the Sandy Hook massacre led to a contentious exchange with the judge presiding over the case.

Ex-FBI agent Bill Aldenberg had been delivering hours of emotional testimony against Jones on Tuesday, stopping himself repeatedly when his voice started cracking. When Joness attorney Norm Pattis took over questioning, he veered toward a turning point in his clients career: his endorsement and interview of former President Donald Trump.

Since Jones had peddled misinformation for decades about everything from the Oklahoma City bombing to the 9/11 attacks, it immediately sparked backlash, but Pattiss questioning intimated that outrage over his clients broadcasts calling Sandy Hook a hoax was all about election-year rhetoric. Judge Barbara Bellis quickly sustained one objection about the relevance of a question about Hillary Clinton.

Once the subject matter turned to Megyn Kellysinterview of Jones on NBC News, the judge instructed the jury to leave the room and a blistering exchange followed. Pattis defended the line of questioning.

Its our contention that this issue was largely dead until Hillary Clinton made a campaign issue of it in 2016, he told the judge, who indicated that the matter had been settled and Pattis lost.

I already ruled on the issue, and were moved on from that, Bellis said. So now, you just talked about Megyn Kelly. So lets address Megyn Kelly.

With respect to Megyn Kelly, given the nature of the argument that the plaintiffs made here, its our contention we are entitled to put on exaggeration, as a defense, Pattis said. When Megyn Kelly and NBC did an interview with Jones in 2017, a number of Connecticut residents petitioned local affiliates to not air the 2017 interview with Jones. I want to know what this man [Aldenberg] is one of them.

Attorney Chris Mattei, who represents Aldenberg and eight families of Sandy Hook victims, said that there was no good faith basis to ask that question and that Pattis had no evidence that his client was part of that group.

The larger issue here, which is what attorney Pattis is trying to inject into this case is some sort of echo of what he made the centerpiece of his opening, which is that this lawsuit is an effort to silence Mr. Jones, Mattei said. He was trying to get in through Mr. Aldenberg that some unnamed group of people have been involved in sending a letter to NBC for one specific purpose: And that is to try and inject some sort of political argument to the jury, which is impermissible.

Before trial began, Jones had three default judgments entered against him in Sandy Hook-related cases for failing to turn over discovery to the plaintiffs. That effectively meant that Jones had lost the cases before they began, and the juries sole task was to determine how much he owed in damages. A Texas jury already found Jones owed millions to two Sandy Hook parents. The Connecticut trial to determine what he owes eight other families and Alderman began Tuesday.

The day ended with testimony by Carlee SotoParisi, who wept as she recalled how she learned about the death of her sister Victoria Leigh Soto, a teacher at Sandy Hook elementary school who was one of the 28 people killed during the massacre. Trial continues on Wednesday.

Former President Obama owns a home on Marthas Vineyard but reality of year-round population is much differ – MassLive.com

For local and state officials on Marthas Vineyard, the decision to send a group of roughly 50 Venezuelan migrants to the island was a failed political stunt orchestrated by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to create chaos in a small community with under 20,000 year-round residents.

DeSantis claimed credit Wednesday for flying migrants to Marthas Vineyard, where local officials quickly put together a temporary shelter, medical services, and legal counsel. Supporters of the move have painted the island as a wealthy haven for Democrats, though locals say that is not the entire truth while decrying the use of migrants for political purposes.

This is all part of a very cruel ruse that manipulated vulnerable people who are simply seeking a better life and choosing a location to get maximum attention I think in part try to embarrass and paint a non-border community as hypocrites, said state Sen. Julian Cyr, a Democrat representing the Cape and Islands. I think they failed.

At an unrelated press conference Thursday, DeSantis said immigrants are inclined to think Florida is a good place, arguing sanctuary states are better equipped to support them. Gov. Charlie Baker has opposed making Massachusetts a sanctuary state and pushed for an end to the national security crisis at the border in a letter with 25 other governors.

Our message to them is we are not a sanctuary state, and its better to be able to go to a sanctuary jurisdiction, DeSantis said. And yes, we will help facilitate that transport for you to be able to go to greener pastures.

While Marthas Vineyard is home to wealthy families in the summer, the community has a thriving year-round population that has grown over the past decade, where the median household income is slightly below the state average, and multiple languages are spoken in area-high schools.

State Rep. Dylan Fernandes, whose district includes the island, said Marthas Vineyard was chosen to create chaos. Both Nantucket and Marthas Vineyard are incredibly diverse places, he said.

The school district on Marthas Vineyard is over a third non-white. On Nantucket, its majority-minority. Both islands have experienced incredible growth, he said. A lot of that is predominantly due to immigration. And so these are already immigrant communities. Theyre already incredibly welcoming.

Cyr said the island certainly has some notoriety as a result of the people who vacation during the busy summer season or may own a second home there but the reality on the ground is slightly different.

Theres more waiters and landscapers and construction workers and teachers and firefighters and working-class people who make a life on these islands than anyone else, he said, though a housing crisis and high costs of living are making it difficult for people to afford to stay on the island.

It is not the first time federal politicians have floated Marthas Vineyard as a port of entry for people who crossed into the United States unlawfully.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz introduced legislation in October 2021 that would require the Department of Homeland to send any person who has illegally entered the United States in a covered Bord Patrol sector to 12 new ports of entry, including Cambridge, Marthas Vineyard, and Nantucket.

In a statement at the time, Cruz said the bill, which is pending in committee, would help alleviate the massive overload at the southern border by establishing new ports of entry in Democrat-led communities such as North Hero, Vermont, where [U.S. Sen.] Bernie Sanders spends his summers, and Marthas Vineyard, where Democrat elites host their cocktail parties.

Cyr said there is a nuance to understanding the community on Marthas Vineyard.

We have working people who are struggling to make ends meet, almost exclusively driven by the cost of housing, theres plenty of work. If anything, we have a workforce shortage because of the housing crisis, he said. Just because there is a tremendous amount of wealth that is present among our visitors doesnt mean that is reflective in the year-round population.

The population in Dukes County, which covers Marthas Vineyard and several smaller islands to the northwest, grew by 24% from the 2010 to 2020 U.S. Census, according to data presented by the Marthas Vineyard Commission in early January 2022. Overall, the entire state saw a 7.4% population increase, and every county except Franklin and Berkshire Counties saw some growth.

It is not the first time the Cape and Islands region has seen an uptick in residents. According to commission data, Barnstable County grew by 53% and Dukes County by 46% in the 1970s, even as the rest of the state did not see a massive shift.

Even with the growth in the past 10 years, a housing crisis is very present in Dukes County particularly on Marthas Vineyard. The islands housing stock grew by less than 2% between 2010 and 2020, even as the population increased by 25%, according to the commission.

For the first time in five decades, the housing stock also shifted to year-round occupancy, at 51%, according to the commission. Total housing units for Marthas Vineyard grew from 16,973 to 17,312, data showed.

The median household income for Dukes County is $77,318, according to census data, compared to $84,385 statewide. U.S. Census data for Dukes County shows the population as 89% white, 5% Black, 3.8% Latinx, and 1.4% Asian.

Lisa Belcastro, the coordinator of the homeless shelter on Marthas Vineyard who organized much of the initial response on the island, said the decision to send migrants there is part of a political game where human beings are being used as pawns.

Its a political game, and shame on everyone involved, she said Thursday morning. We have to stop the chess game right now because theyre human beings, just like you, just like your spouses, and just like your kids, and they dont deserve to be treated as theyre being treated.

Obama and Clinton werent arrested by the military – PolitiFact

Former President Barack Obama returned to the White House on Sept. 7 for the unveiling of his and former first lady Michelle Obamas official portraits.

Is he now in custody, alongside former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who in 2004, similarly unveiled her White House portrait with former President Bill Clinton?

A recent Facebook post makes just such a claim.

"Obama & Clinton are being arrested by the military," reads the description of a video posted Sept. 14 on the social media platform.

This post was flagged as part of Facebooks efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook.)

The claim is bogus. The 15-minute video makes no mention of Obama or Clinton getting arrested.

We also found no media reports to corroborate the claim.

And given that there was widespread reporting of the unveiling of the White House portraits of both Obama and Clinton, there would certainly have been wall-to-wall news coverage if theyd been arrested.

Both Obama and Clinton have remained active on social media since Obamas portrait unveiling and the inaccurate Facebook post. And on Sept. 15, Clinton and daughter Chelsea Clinton appeared on "The Drew Barrymore Show."

We rate this post Pants on Fire!

Donald Trump and Barack Obama Are Among the Former Presidents Invited to Queen Elizabeth’s Memorial – Town & Country

Even before the formal arrangements for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth were announced, President Biden had confirmed his plans to attend the official state service. But while the President is in London on Monday, he and the First Lady will reportedly be the only American delegates at the ceremony due to space constraints for the historic event.

Just because they're no longer in the White House doesn't mean the former presidents are being left out entirely, though. In fact, all five living former presidentsDonald Trump, Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Jimmy Carterhave been invited to "a Service of Thanksgiving for the Life of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II," in collaboration with the British Embassy at the Washington National Cathedral. The event, which is set to feature an honor guard by the Queens Colour Squadron, a unit of the Royal Air Force, will be held on Wednesday, September 21, according to Sky News.

The cathedral has a long and prominent history, having played host to the funerals of Dwight Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, and George HW Bush, as well as memorial services for the likes of Winston Churchill, the Queen's beloved first Prime Minister. Last week, after the death of Queen Elizabeth was announced, the cathedral's bell tolled 96 times in honor of Her Majesty's 96 years of life.

More From Town & Country

It has not yet been announced whether any or all of the former presidents will attend the upcoming service, but we will update this post as more information becomes available.
