March 22, 2023

The German drama Chess Story will be released on DVD and digital April 11 from Film Movement.

Set in Vienna in 1938 as Austria is occupied by the Nazis, the drama follows Dr. Josef Bartok (Oliver Masucci), who is preparing to flee to America when he is arrested by the Gestapo. As a former notary to the deposed Austrian aristocracy, he is instructed to hand over access to their private bank accounts. Refusing to cooperate, Bartok is locked in solitary confinement by the local secret police operative Bhm (Albrecht Schuch). Just as his mind is beginning to crack, he happens upon a book of famous chess matches. To withstand the torture of isolation, Bartok disappears into the world of chess, maintaining his fragile sanity only by memorizing every move.

Adapted with opulent attention to period detail by filmmaker and opera director Philipp Stlzl, Chess Story brings Stefan Zweigs final novella to life with an ensemble cast featuring Masucci (When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, Never Look Away, Look Whos Back), Schuch (Berlin Alexanderplatz, System Crasher, Bad Banks), Birgit Minichmayr (3 Days in Quiberon, The Goldfish, Everyone Else) and Rolf Lassgrd (A Man Called Ove).

Its nearly impossible to imagine a criminal investigation today that doesnt involve forensic science firearms analysis, bloodstain patterns, footprints. CSI On Trial reveals the shocking lack of scientific validity behind these investigative practices through real-life criminal cases, the stories of the wrongly convicted who are now free, and the believed innocent who remain behind bars.

Filmmaker and series executive producer Molly Hermann from The Biscuit Factory narrates the docuseries. She interviewed nearly 70 scientists, practitioners, attorneys, judges, and innocent people who were convicted by flawed forensic evidence.

I believed the old adage that the U.S. criminal justice system isnt perfect, but is still the best in the world, said Hermann. But what I discovered is that many methods of forensic science used to build criminal cases arent just imperfect, theyre irresponsible and unscientific with a profound impact on human lives. And thats our mission -- to investigate how and why most forensic methods are flawed and explore how we can make the justice system more accountable and more fair.

"CSI On Trial is an amazing example of what Curiosity Stream does best dive deep into realms you thought you knew, to reveal stunning new insight, said Rob Burk, Curiositys Head of Content. I had heard of the so-called CSI effect -- but was shocked to learn how little science there is behind most forensic science disciplines and the incredibly high price so many have paid because of it. We hope this series contributes to a healthy dialog about the real capabilities and limitations of forensics science."

Curiositys Burk is the docuseries executive producer along with Hermann and Rob Lyall from The Biscuit Factory.

The woman, who had been ending a relationship with Bray, was found on the ground near a vehicle in the parking lot, the probable cause affidavit said. She had been stabbed multiple times.

Billhimer said a Brick Township police officer doing a routine check of the lot about 5:30 p.m. found her while investigating the vehicle, which had two flat tires.

The woman initially was taken to a hospital and was treated and released, but complications from her injuries resulted in her being readmitted to the hospital, he said.

Investigators determined Bray was the person who had stabbed her, through evidence found at the scene and information from the woman's family, and he was arrested later in the evening, Billhimer said. Read more: Woman Stabbed In Brick Was Ending Relationship, Mom Says: Affidavit

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced that on March 21, 2023, Lisa Ziobro, 44, of Barnegat, was charged with two counts of Aggravated Arson and four counts of Arson.

On March 21, 2023, at approximately 7:30 a.m., Officers from the Barnegat Township Police Department and Barnegat Township Fire Departments were dispatched to a reported structure fire on Waterfall Lane. A thorough and extensive investigation conducted by the Ocean County Prosecutors Office Major Crime Unit-Arson Squad, Ocean County Sheriffs Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, Barnegat Township Police Department Detective Bureau, and Ocean County Fire Marshals Office, determined that two separate fires had been intentionally set within the structure. The first fire was set on a mattress in a bedroom, and the second fire was set on a shower curtain in the bathroom. Further investigation determined that Ziobro who resided at the residence was responsible for setting both fires.

Ziobro was transported to Barnegat Township Police Headquarters, processed, and transported to the Ocean County Jail where she remains lodged pending a detention hearing.

Prosecutor Billhimer acknowledges the Ocean County Prosecutors Office Major Crime Unit-Arson Squad, Ocean County Sheriffs Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, Barnegat Township Police Department Detective Bureau, Barnegat Township Police Department, and Ocean County Fire Marshals Office, for their combined and cooperative efforts in connection with this investigation.

Fatal Crash Investigation in the Metro Division – charlottenc.gov

On Saturday, March 18, 2023, at approximately 10:01 p.m., CMPD officers from the Metro Division responded to the 1200 block of N. Tryon St. in reference to a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian. When officers arrived, they located a 2016 Hyundai Sonata with front-end damage in the roadway. The driver of the Hyundai was identified as Ms. Laquita Dionne Blackmon (DOB 03/02/1991). Ms. Blackmon remained on scene. Officers also located a pedestrian near the Hyundai in the middle of the roadway who was not responsive. The pedestrian was identified as Mr. Daniel Antwan Henry (DOB 05/07/1981). The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC responded to assist. MEDIC transported Mr. Henry to Atrium Health Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased. Next of kin has been notified of Mr. Henry's death.

The CMPD Major Crash Investigation Unit along with the DWI Task Force, and CMPD Crime Scene Investigation responded to conduct the investigation. The initial investigation indicates that Mr. Henry was crossing N. Tryon St. near W. 15th St. Mr. Henry was not in a crosswalk and was wearing dark clothing. As Mr. Henry was crossing N. Tryon St., Ms. Blackmon was driving northeast on N. Tryon St. and that is when the front end of the Hyundai collided with Mr. Henry. Ms. Blackmon pulled over immediately after the collision.

Speed does not appear to be a factor for the Hyundai. Ms. Blackmon was screened for impairment and was found not to be impaired. Impairment is unknown for Mr. Henry and is pending the toxicology report.

This is an ongoing, active investigation. As further information develops it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs. Any witnesses to the crash, or anyone with information concerning the crash, should contact Detective Mercedes at (704) 432-2169 Ext# 5 or Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
